  • This beautiful scene from I Pagliacci begins with the Ding Dong chorus which is followed by Nedda's celebrated ballatella 'Stridono lassú'. At the beginning you can hear Giuseppe Di Stefano in Canio's final call for the show-piece later that night 'a ventitré ore'.
This scene is taken from a vynil record with the complete I Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana recordings made in 1955 with Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Tito Gobbi and Rolando Panerai. Tulio Serafin conducts the orchestra of the Scala di Milano.

Sublime, the trills are heaven, from belcanto to verismo, amazing.

Gorgeous.. this I have these two operas on vinyl and they are wonderful. Callas is so good .. she makes you cry. this scene shows just why she is the undisputed queen of the opera.

You see folks... this is when you stop listening to italian opera from the beginning of the 19th century like Bellini or Rossini and you start listening to Leoncavallo, Puccini, etc.
The difference in quality is through the roof.

Callas here finds the voice of a young girl, simple, not sophsticated, a street actress- interesting as usual

ever been to the met opera in nyc, they perform everything in over drive...i think the city does that to people....i saw this at the met and this is the tempo performed.

It may be the tempo that you heard at the Met, but is not the tempo of the Callas recording: someone has produced it a faster speed, which means it is also at a higher pitch than the original recording. Buy her EMI recording of the opera and you'll hear the difference.

What a pity! The speed is faster than recording and due to this the pitch is half tone higher.... G major instead F sharp

This is played at too high speed. The aria is a semitone too high and too fast. The recording is from 1954, not 1955.

1954 to be sure but not officially released to the public till a year later - in 1955.
