I just love this tank!! The small fish in a big tank is so up my alley and I plan on the same thing in the future! looking good, can't wait to see this tank in a few years.
This is the best commercial ever for White Clouds! My favorite time saving trick is prefilter sponges on all my intakes - clean them once a week and put off cleaning the actual filter for a looooong time.

Hi Rachel. This tank is stunning. I love it. I love watching your videos. I am learning so much from them. Thankyou so much for making such informative and fun videos
hey Rachel! good afternoon from Baguio City, Philippines... i'm technically a nomad, so i couldn't keep a big tank like that for longer than three years in one place, but what can i say: great tank, great filter... love reading all the seemingly smart comments, but took me well over 6 minutes to wait and scroll down through all of them... i'll look through your other videos for sure - one bit at a time!
awesome "rain forest" decor type of aquarium.... A very interesting cleaning process of a "hamburg mat filter", once a year, that is an excellent efficiency method... Thanks Rachel , i love your videos...
I have a HMF on a tank which has not been cleaned for over 2 years. Same idea with a aqua one canister which has not been cleaned in the same period. The canister has not pads only matrix. No sign of a water level drop behind the pad so I'm sure it going to last another year.
I love this tank..loved the colour of the little green sucker ..I was worried when you was cleaning the plant and not looking that you was going to suck up some fish. lol. also just caught up on lots of your videos that I've not seen yet and loving your husband's welding vids..keep it up.
I saw an idea for Mattenfilter removal... lift slightly and put a bag under and wrap up the sides then remove to lessen the mess left behind. Haven't tried it yet cos my filter has months to go before I have to do the same myself. Great vids and you rock. THank you.
Man, that tank is beautiful. I'm in the process of getting equipment together for only my 3rd tank I have ever owned. It's exciting to have a blank canvas.
I really love your vids! I don't have tanks at the moment, but if I ever get serious about it I'm going to binge on your videos (more than I already have). :)

I use Matten on all my tanks which are two 265's, two 220's and a 170. I too clean them between 8-15 months, this is my only means of filtration ran by an Alita 80. When I clean the Mattens I drain the tank to about 8-10" of water, then before the foam is removed I slide in a piece of acrylic I got from the hardware store and slide that in between the foam and the glass rods. So when I remove the foam, all the nasty water and gunk build up behind the foam doesn't go all over my tank. Then I clean the foam with regular tap water and then I siphon behind where the foam was to remove the excess buildup. Then I slide the foam back in and then remove the acrylic piece and fill up. The tank clears up a lot faster doing it this way.
Hello I had some questions. do u add stuf for the plants or did u put in something like aqua soil? and do u have a co2flipper ? and whats the giant plant on the right? Love ur tank, keep up the good work
What a cool tank! I love huge tanks with a bunch of small community fish like that, you could sit and watch for hours n see what everyone in the tanks little daily routines are!!!
I loved the build of this tank and I just really geeked out! Is the Borneo sucker that you showed on the back wall the same as what you just got in the death batch? He was a complete stunner!
Oh my! I love this tank! I'm learning from you. Definitely going to be much smaller so I don't know if a batten would be possible. However, the rest of it, from substrates to stocking a 36 bow front I'm learning! Thank you!
Hey! this borneo sucker!? (10:05) i never ever saw that fish in this nice green colour with that pattern! looks great... what species is this exactly ?
When you refilled your tank you said you used "well water" and ran a hose directly to the tank from the faucet. Does that mean you don't have to use any chemicals to pre-treat your water to remove chemicals, like we do in the city, before you add it to your tank?
Hi I recently set up my first tank a bio orb with white mountain minnows and a couple of loaches I like in your 150 the wood replicating a tree stump im on a low budget could I just get and clean wood from the woods for the same effect ?
I hope its okay to copy a tank because I am doing a miniature version in my 40g. I've already got minnows and they are my favourite but a river flow system would make them happier I think and your natural style design and planting is glorious. I love the mattenfilter hiding the intake. You are awesome.
Sorry to be pain you said light is fluval hot5 does that mean high output t5? And how many bulbs....im curious cause you have no co2 AND A DEEP TANK but your plants look amazing
I love the matten filter design. I'm curious how you have the pump flow setup I'll check your other videos). You have some gorgeous fish in there. I also didn't know susswassertang sticks to rocks! Good job on the video. I do find the foam from Swiss Tropicals (Poret) to far superior for this kind of application. I love you book on small fish by the way, it really helped me narrow down choices for a small species tank.
Im going to be building a plenum for my 55 gallon tank. i currently have nothing in my quarantine tank so im thinking im going to get one of these and install it while im rebuilding my 55. seems like am awesome system in general but mostly i need something for power outages and i think a corner filter run off a 12v air pump powered by a motorcycle battery is it. also with my sponge filter in the other corner i should be fine for extended power outages.
Hey Rachel! I love your channel, I'm a fairly new sub! Your channel has helped me quite a lot! Even though I only own 30 gallons worth of tanks (20 gal and two 5's) I still have learned a lot :) thanks!
Love your vids. I understand you're on well water which is great. how do you match the water temps or do you not worry about it. I know my water is super cold from my well. also would love a video of more of your other equipment and drain system.
Is that something which would have also worked to somehow get a plastic bag under and around it in the tank before pulling it up out, so less mess in the tank?
This and all your videos are so much fun to watch, and help those of us watching learn a ton :) not to mention some of us wishing we had a nice basement to do something similar :)
Does nicking the rhizome to encourage new growth apply to Java Fern as well? I need to take mine out of the tank and glue it down to the rock properly instead of it just being tied with clear thread do I may nick the rhizome while I'm about it. 😊
Yes, it does. My friend Kevin Kelly taught me that trick (though I had been doing it for years, I didn't know it really worked until recently). Most folks would use their scissors or a razor blade, I happen to have nails of steel so just use them as I am clipping off the dead leaves.
Rachel O'leary thanks, I keep some nice sharp scissors for my pruning and a long folding set for stuff I can't reach in the tank. 😊 I also meant to ask something else: is it normal to be able to detect a smell similar to fresh soil when doing maintenance? My water parameters are all good, my fish are happy and my plants are growing well, I just want to be sure that smell is normal.
You mentioned having a fluval fx 6 for the water flow. Do you have any type of media in it or is it completely empty? Where did you buy that big piece of sponge? I really have enjoyed your series on this aquarium all the way through!
Your plants are beautiful! Do you use CO2? I ask because I don't and my plants are ok and they grow. But they are only ok lol. Not huge and amazing like yours.
I absolutely love that aquarium! If I was a fish that's where I would want to live. :) I don't know if you have other videos on this particular tank or not. I would like to know what the substrate is, what kind of wood and you have and rocks. The plants are just beautiful. Oh and those are such cool fish you have in there too! Very pretty little guys all. You probably have a vid on the filter as well? Thanks for the video!

My favorite time saving trick is prefilter sponges on all my intakes - clean them once a week and put off cleaning the actual filter for a looooong time.
I really enjoy my White Clouds. My favorite fish right now.
Have an example or link? I imagine its just a coarse filter or sponger cut to fit on your intake inside the tank?
I do the same thing. It significantly saves on filter maintenance and media, especially with canister filters.
It's also a great shrimp saver if you have small shrimps in your tank.
I have the same feeling about the prefilters. I use them mainly because of the shrimps but as you've said - they really pay-off in lots of ways.

+Joseph Krug sometimes you might even learn what not to do! LOL
How thick is the foam? Do you think a 1 1/2in foam is enough filtration for a 55+ gal tank?
I also meant to ask something else: is it normal to be able to detect a smell similar to fresh soil when doing maintenance? My water parameters are all good, my fish are happy and my plants are growing well, I just want to be sure that smell is normal.
+Gaina yes, I call it "earthy"
Rachel O'leary Oh good 😊.
This tank is really coming on Rachel I can't wait for all the flowing algae to grow back on the back wall again 🤗🤗🤗
You mentioned having a fluval fx 6 for the water flow. Do you have any type of media in it or is it completely empty? Where did you buy that big piece of sponge? I really have enjoyed your series on this aquarium all the way through!
+Ricky Kenerly Cichlids just biomedia in the filter. I got the sponge from swisstropicals.com
Ok thanks!
Your plants are beautiful! Do you use CO2? I ask because I don't and my plants are ok and they grow. But they are only ok lol. Not huge and amazing like yours.
No co2 and no ferts
@@RachelOLeary that's so funny. I love it! I think I will skip the c02 and ferts too.
Does your canister filter have media in it or is it just a way to move the water around?
tank looks great! not sure if I missed it but do you use co2? if you do how much do you need to supplement that big of a tank?
I do not use any co2, fertilizers, or enriched substrate in this tank.
Wow! Just discovered your channel. Love it. Thanks for posting this. I learned quite a bit from this video.
Hi Rachel, How much your monthly electric bill with those many tanks ?

Rachel.....waiting on the info. for the rocks. thanks.
+Alberto Ramos it's all in the earlier playlist. They were collected locally
+lizzyanthus1 I have an entire playlist on the home page :) it is the 150g modified hillstream build
How much lightng (and type) do you have on this tank? Do you add fertilizer for the bolbitis?
