- Europe is facing disruption on many fronts. From the invasion of Ukraine by Russia to an unstable political situation in Germany and protests in Serbia. Add to this Donald Trump’s comments that he will uphold the U.S. commitment to NATO only so long as Alliance member states pay their due amount for defense. How should Europe respond to these challenges in a consistent manner? Marta Prochwicz, the Deputy Head of the European Council's Warsaw office joined TVP World to explore this situation.

The EU should get it’s act together and stop relying on America for defence .
As à french I think rising military budget is good if we buy Europeen arme and develop europeen economy.Anyway the americans wants to leave Europe we like or not but its their choice
We should spend whatever we need to spend - which is more than we do now. But we should do it becasue we need to - not because Trump says so. American interests are not necessarily our interestes any longer.
Money may need to be spent on defense, especially thanks to Russian leadership belligerence. No one has to like it. It is what it is.
Future looks bright regardless. Life is prime thing, happiness strived for for sure.
What happens if a NATO nation threatens another NATO nation? Oh wait...Canada and Greenland.
Diplomacy at first and the collapse of NATO if Trump attacks Canada and Greenland giving birth to a new alliance where the US is the enemy. Other US alliences all over the world will witness the betrayl of the US and start negotiation with Canada and Europe to see if they can join in the new allience while Trump calls North Korea and Cuba to get some tips on how to run an issolated nation.
Greenland is not a member of the NATO alliance.
@@gerardflynn7382 It most certainly is! Greenland is a full member of the Council of Europe and NATO and we don't attack our allies (unlike the US). If one of us are attacked we all come to the rescue.
5%
We need to implement a new clause in that Article 5 can only be invoked by members that have paid the current annual membership fee. The EU states are elusive. Do they want their own EU organisation or do they simply want to benefit the EU defence industry. NATO is not just about the US and the EU.
How slowly can I say this.
There is no membership fee.
And not all of Europe is in NATO alliance.
I remember Obama openly requesting and warning Europe increase your defense spending. I did not vote for Trump,. Whoever b3came POTUS this term would ask the same, Europe must pay your far share. America risks the lives of our service men and women for your freedom. Do you far share please. I support leaving NATO unless Europe pays your far share.
Not all of European countries are in NATO.
Tell Trump the imbecile that the US doesn't own NATO.
This is weak and painful to watch. Mixes EU and NATO, and do not understand the difference between a requirement and a target level of defense spending.
Obviously, Trump can not demand 5%.
That said, wise for NATO members to prepare for a future military conflict with USA or against Russia without US support
Good response Polstar but the MofU between the EU and NATO is worrying. I do not expect to see a non-EU NATO boss again. The EU want to ensure that they buy EU weapons etc too. In war, you need the best equipment, not necessarily locally produced options. I wonder if this trend will encourage non-EU countries to secure their own defence in the longterm? It may be more cost effective and less political to boot.
Eu economies have seen tepid and even negative growth ,since we got out of Covid. It's going to be hard for them to justify increased defense spending to their electorates.
Some European countries have realized the danger of Russia and are increasing their defense spending.
This is not just Trump. Americans have been prodding Europe to more for defense was first pushed by President Nixon in the 70s.
Interestingly NATO allies Japan and Australia have indicated they are beefing up defence spending ( Japan from 1% GDP to 2% ) and Australia to buy and build eight nuclear powered submarines- whilst cynically sitting on 2% GDP. Australia claims it will increase to 2.5% by 2030 and 3% by the mid 2030’s - but you can expect Trump to put considerable pressure on both countries to lift their game.
Since 23 NATO countries are also EU members, wouldn't that double the cost
on them if they have to contribute to both NATO and the EU military>?
European nations to spend 5% of GDP on defence .
How many years it will take to become self reliant ?
Decades or centuries possibly.
At no time did I say NATO was only EU states. There is ac2%GDP fee, don't nickpick.
defense from who!!?? be careful with what you wish for!!!
For yourselves dumbass
3% at least, seems fair to me. nowaday.
citizens needn't obsessed w/ exact numbers! The TREND is the issue!!! We simply need to start spending way more and get ppl trained!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like to compare with USA you would need to take all the Nordic countries 25m people, all the baltic ones 7.5m, Poland ~36.5m, France 68m, UK 68m, Germany 84m, Greece 10m and countries worth of 35m more(darn there are a lot below 10m and few around 40m). I know some figures are old but same took USA population from the same place also(so here USA had only 335m people, not 340m).
My point is that if you don't take population into consideration there is no way most European country can get to the same numbers as USA because they have 335m people. Like Finland having 280k wartime does not sound like much but take the population into consideration and it equals USA having 17m and now suddenly you notice the reality of things. Finland small amount of 700 artys, 700 mortars and 100 mlrs suddenly turns into 42623 artys, 42623 mortars and 6089 mlrs. Like then if you want to compare an carrier to and arty, lets say the carrier is 13b and the arty 5-10m so lets take the average 7.5m thats 1 carrier cost the same as 1733 artys so then those 42623 artys would equal 25 carriers. NO it is not this simple because values change and do not include upgrades and you can't really compare a carrier to a arty, its as wrong as currently comparing military budgets between NATO members probably has the same margin of error that is up to 33%. Still it gives you a picture that tells a story that does not say the same thing Trump shouts.
So I do know that I am not even close to the smartest person alive and if I can see that there is a need to create a system that can be used to compare countries contribution to NATO, then I really hope I can assume there is someone working in NATO smarter than me that can create that system because this shouting "war" will go nowhere and everyone will just keep blaming everyone else. So create a system that makes us comparable, then there is no need to argue or blame others because it becomes a bit like the check-in clock at work and the reports on the jobs done by you. It will only become as equal as the workload is shared in companies, you all know that one that does less than others but there will always be that one that does less in your opinion because it is impossible for us all to view value of things in the same way except if we would only clone one human, one mind and the clones would have their minds connected leaving no room for reasoning in a different way.
Population of the US = 334 million +/-.
Population of Europe =752 million.
Population of the EU = 450 million.
@@gerardflynn7382 Population European part of NATO ~620m. Only USA 340m and Canada 40m outside and total in NATO almost 1b. Like EU is a wrong number to use because that doesn't include UK and others that are in NATO, like EU is on the continent but ... Nothing is simple when its made hard...
Sill if you would take the bottom 340m of the 620 then they would have very bad armies while if you take the top 340m... So easiest is just to use the capita multiplier, if one country has 50m and the other one 100m then just take everything the 50m has times 2 before comparing.
So if your point was that 335m is comparable with 450m then no because that 335m is 1 country while the 450m is a lot of different countries with their own laws and leaders. Before you even imagine uniting Europe as one country then why did they even bother to stop Germany if that was the better option to just unite em all under one flag.
Ehh, shouldn't the USA start spending 5% first... I mean, "lead by example?"
in military affairs/capability, 'total money has a percentage-effect of its own!'. False comparison!
Good point. Unfortunately the 3.5 percent of US GDP smokes the combined GDP contributions of the rest of NATO. The US currently funds 3/4 of NATO. But, sure, the USA should increase military spending since it's obvious the divorce is coming. I'll be surprised if the EU or NATO as it is now will be the same by 2029. Everyone is unhappy with the Cold War arrangement.
Military capacity stockpiles in many ways. The USA, Finland and Poland don't really need 5% because they don't have to make up for past negligence. As the Finnish PM stated "It's not about how much you spend, it's about what you have"
@@macvena1. The cold war ended in the late 1980's.
2. Not all of Europe is in NATO.
3. Poland and Lithuania have a combined NATO spend of 8% of GDP.
4. The US is only in Europe mainly for Trade purposes.
