I thought of primitive water distillation recently that involves weaving. basically, the starting idea was a long piece of giant bamboo, or something similar to put above a pot of boiling water. The bamboo is "bent" back down so as the steam passes into it, it cools enough by the time it reaches the other side and precipitates back down into a collection bowl. Then I thought what if no bamboo available. Well, just weave a similar device from fronds. The part over the water would be thick to let enough water get it, and then tapers down to a thin side at the other end. and the opening of the part over the boiling water would angled as well to allow the most amount of water in. Sounds do-able. Anyways, wondered if you had any thoughts about off-grid water distillation.
Awesome video. You just gave me ideas for ways to make shade umbrellas for my neighbor. I'm thinking it would be easy to back weave more fronds into the brim to weave it larger. Her plants keep burning in the sun and the shades could just sit on her tomato cages.
I'm the palm tree guy in Central Florida and I still haven't tried to do this yet! I keep buying hats when I can just make one of these at the beginning of the week and it'll stay green most the week and then just make a new one next week with the castings for my palm trees! Shoot I can try about seven different kinds of palm leaf it all look like they would work as long as they were prepared properly!

Brilliant thank you.. not sure I can quite get it just watching though....quite frankly I am more inclined to weave baskets than hats but loved that demo

awesome! are you in oahu? I'm gonna be visiting in a few weeks but am not sure on the rules for cutting down coconut palms, wanna make sure I respect the island!
Do you guys ever smoke the hats so they get a darker color? Also does smoking them make them last longer? Curious whats your opinion on smoking hats for a darker color?
Hi there! I wanted to ask: With weaving these hats - can it only be done with just coconut palm leaves? Or can you do this with any kind of palm leaf or straw??
By the way the leaf he is using looks like a coconut frond. Queen palm fronds tend to weep more. It could be a royal but the way he split the stem really makes me lean toward coconut.
Hey guys! Make sure to subscribe because I’m going to make more coconut hat tutorials and how to make other things from palm leaves super soon. I hope to see you on my next video. Thanks everyone !
Very nice artwork, thank you. But the background music is a nuisance which spoils the whole tutorial. We learn and enjoy the craft, and don't like something that is a hindrance.
It would be helpful to learn on the brim that you started under perhaps five or four fronds. On the crown, you gathered ten, I think, then how many did you move over to begin the weave? Your hands obscured the view so I could not even stop and count. Your music is not as educational as of you were to explain what you are actually doing. The brim looks very well done, but difficult to guess what the instructions would actually have been. Thank you for the efforts.

Wonderful video. I love your style of weaving; much less complex than ones I have seen on YT. Great job.

Try watching again. Over under over under depending on how big you want the rim. The rim is the easy part.
@@OffgridSecrets yeah, I got the rim part. I couldn't see the start of the cap part

Too bad there's no palm trees where I live! Looks like a fun project!
Same, I was thinking of trying to use paper strips to make smaller ones for decoration tho.
Agree!
Too good there's newly cut palm trees where i live! I surely make this fun project :)
Remember you can make about 6 hats with one leaf. Have fun

Thanks bro very helpful the lighting's very dark it is quite hard to see what you are doing
Wish you would talk and explain what you’re doing or zoom in when doing the top part of the hat.

How long does it stay with its colour like that? Btw i spot my real good friend coocoo!!😇🙏🏽🌞🌴🌿
It’s brown now. I still have it. It took about 2 weeks to change
I recently bought one, so I need to do anything for care ? Like dip it in water or something ?
Some narration would be helpful.
