Also it would be good to mention if you have the money, you could buy yourself a professional electric or rechargeable battery operated pet clipper set with assorted attachments to cut the knots off the fur safely. Amazon has descent clippers starting at $20
Yes I meant skin, I misspoke :) I don't usually recommend people use clippers on cats unless they know what they're doing. Cats have skin that catches and cuts very easily, they're different from dogs, so it's a lot more dangerous. But for people who are confident about what they're doing, clippers are a good option if the mats can't be brushed out. Or just take the cat to the groomer :)
