  • This is the first start and running of the Ruston Hornsby 4VPHN in the 24RB Ruston Bucyrus Universal Excavator.
It had been sitting for a many years, had water in the motor and had rings stuck in the bores from open exhausts.
i saved if from being scrapped, and after a few weekends worth of work i got it running again.
This time i still only used 150psi, but reset the valve clearances and preheated the intake manifold, the result is as follows in the video, fired up straight away.

I saw that smile on your face. You deserve it. For never having started or seen one started before it looked like you knew exactly what you were doing. The exhaust must have been covered well thru the years. I like the 4 individual exhaust stacks, it seems a lot of the large air start diesels I’ve seen videos of have them. Does that starting system systematically pressurize each cylinder some how? Is the next step to get the machinery turning and then find drive chains?

Its actually has starting instructions on the end of the machine, but it wasnt to hard to work out.
I think it had a basic box over the exhaust stacks when it was at the engineering yard, but nothing on it at the scrap yard.
The air starter has a distributor on the back, driven from the camshaft, that is timed to each cylinder to inject are the power stroke. Or atleast thats what i can work out.
Next step would be clean the radiator, then fix main clutch, free up seized levers and linkages, then see if the rest of the machine will work.
And then find some drive chains

Simple as 1 2 3, right. I always say, I have a hobby where even the wrenches are heavy!

if only it was that easy, that would be nice. yes, thats true, we must be suckers for pain. they are all interesting machines though

@@hurricanedaniel It would have had a folded sheet steel box cover hinged to the cab roof, so that it swings over the exhaust pipes to keep the rain out - I’m very fussy about that being over the exhausts on my 33 R-B, here in rainy UK - it’s amazing how much water can get into the cylinders, if you don’t !
The air start donkey engine is a Ruston & Hornsby 6PS single cylinder petrol engine with an integral compressor cylinder on a common crankshaft. The compressor charges an air receiver vessel up to 250 lb/sq in ( 18 bar approx. ), although the 5 VPHN engine in my 33 will start from 80 lb/sq in., so I don’t bother to get anywhere near that.
Always reminds me of a steam locomotive when you turn the air on to start it, and when you turn the air off, it goes on making much the same noise . . . . Umm ! I think it’s running !
You’ve heard it run light - wait until you hear it working, when the exhaust note starts to bark a bit - fabulous !

@@steveallarton98 i did find a triangle shaped box that would have bee sitting ontop, it also looks like there was hindge points once on the roof also. i think that cover had only been missing since it was in the demolition yard awating to be scrapped.
i will have to fix up the 6PS at some point, but for now i can run it off my larger shop compressor with the check valve set at 150 psi.
they sound nice starting up, and yes, i cant want to hear it under some load.

does it have a sort of one way valve like a compressor to let the compressed air into the cylinder .... where is it located

Ill take some pictures tomorrow and email them to you neal.
Air reservoir under the floor, a gate valve on the outlet pipe feeds a air divider driven by the camshaft.
That is then plumbed to 4 air injectors (one way valves) mounted into the cylinder heads.
Time the crankshaft to the start position (just over tdc on the compression stroke) then open the air tap and away she goes running on air.
