I-bonds are a good option as well. 9.62% and backed by federal government. You can buy a maximum of 10k a year, they have a minimum hold of 1 year and if you sell them before 5 years you lose the last 3 months of gains.
The rate also changes depending on inflation and the 9.62% is for any bought before the end of this month and good for the upcoming 6months before they would be moved to the new rate which I would assume will still be at least 7%.

Might be a bit late to look for safe investments now when we are already in this environment. As always. It always makes sense thus to have some sort of hedge against this in your portoflio at all times.

If I recall correctly, bonds are counterintuitive. If you buy a treasury with 1.5% yield, it means you bought it at an expensive price. If the yield rises to 4%, it doesn't mean you are winning. On the contrary, if you want to sell your bond, you would sell it at a lower price (because the yield is fixed in dollar terms, no matter the bond price in the market).
So, If you buy a treasury today with a 4% annualized return, keep in mind that if the yield drops to 2%, it means your bond has appreciated and you can sell higher.

bonds are not meant to perform well. they are more of a hedge against market pullbacks like we see here. Overall, i think they lost their allure in the 90s and had no place in the 2000's until just now. Things can change of course. But there must be a reason most big profile names have no bonds in their portfolios...

Based on 6:12 it seems that staying value/dividend stocks might be a good idea. Then from 2024 rotating back into growth. Assuming growth stocks will be beaten down over the next two years as the rates rise/remain high.

Holding cash is never a bad idea until you feel more comfortable. At the end of the day you only lose by however much inflation is. With stock you have infinite lose potential but also infinite profit potential. No right or wrong way.

Thanks for the video. Yea, I believe there will be more pain for the next 4-6 months. FOMC is looking to hit a 4-4.5 rate by years end. Good chance the market will correct even lower. Possibly by another 20%. Even doing 30-60 day T bills will garnera small profit but keeping the liquidity within a 30 day window.
Option 1: Gov/Corp Sec for 4% at the cost of Cash flexibility for 2 years (Market may be recovering by that time and missing out on the growth)
Option 2: Keep cash on hand and ride it out waiting for the perfect opportunity
Option 3: DCA and lose more money in the short turn with greater gains in the long term
Option 4: Short the market (High Risk)
Option:5: Dividend Aristocrats and Kings. Universal (UVV) is over 6% on Dividends. This beats the return of option 1 and also capitalizes on Option 3
Bonus Option: Sell puts and options for the companies you are willing to buy anyway. Get the stock at a lower price or get paid to "miss out" on the lower price.
It may be a sidways market for the next 5+ years. Stay flexible. You might have to add in some trading (short term) to go along with your value investing (long term).

You'd better be holding those treasuries to maturity, or at least one year. Bond prices will continue to go down as long as the Fed is doing quantitative tightening.
If you want safety and stability without any time restraints, you might consider the most boring of all; a high yield, FDIC insured savings account. You can take your money out at any time, without loss of capital, when you're ready to jump back into equities.

  • @StackAndPrepper

Great video, very informative. I have to say though, a 4% coupon rate on ultra-safe investments like bonds might sound great, but you also have to consider that we're in an 8% inflation economy right now. So you're actually losing wealth over time due to the loss of your purchasing power. I'm going to stick with equities. It's easy to find stocks yielding 4% dividends just like the bonds you're talking about. I believe the stock market will eventually recover just like it always has in the past. In the mean time, I'm picking up shares on sale.

    • @jonathanemontgomery

I think people buying long term bonds are betting inflation will go down. So if inflation is 8 percent this year but will average say, 2.5% for the next 30 years, then a 4% bond isn’t completely losing.
