  • The fabled DKA. This condition is the reason why it’s so important to monitor for the signs of Diabetes in pets (increased drinking and urination, increased appetite, and weight loss). Having your pet diagnosed as a diabetic is not a fun diagnosis, but it’s even worse if you find out because your pet went into a potentially fatal crisis that requires very intensive care.

This is very important information. My cat Tiger was an undiagnosed diabetic until he had DKA. He was hospitalized and stabilized fortunately, and he’s been insulin dependent ever since. I think it’s important for pet parents to know that even though it can be scary, diabetes can be managed and your pet can thrive! Tiger will be 16 next month and diabetic nearly seven years. He knows when it’s time for medicine and is spends the rest of his day being a normal cat.

During 2021 my soul dog had this this undiagnosed diabetes. I had him to the three times that week, kept calling every single day to update on his progress saying he’s getting sicker and sicker. The third visit, they finally decided to blood work, in the office, and it came back he was diabetic, it took two days after badgering to get back me to tell the results. His glucose was over 400, but couldn’t tell me the exact number. They didn’t have insulin there or couldn’t write for because the Dr was in, so he’d need to go another day without it. We hurry up and ran my sweet up over to the Emergency Vet, who was barely clingy to life. His glucose stopped reading at 700, ketones at 11. He had all the symptoms that you said. He put in a good fight, but it had been too long, and with everything, his body was shutting down. I said goodbye to my baby boy. I’ll never forever that vets office…or myself for what happened to my baby. Nobody should have to go through that experience like he did. 💔😭

My kitty was an insulin dependent diabetic for 6 years before she had her first dka episode. For some reason she suddenly stopped eating and because she wasn't eating I reduced and then eventually stopped giving her insulin. I had never heard of dka and never knew that suddenly stopping insulin could be catastrophic. After 3 days in the er, she came home and was eventually fine. Perhaps if my vet had warned me about suddenly stopping insulin even if a cat stops eating, my kitty wouldn't have to have spent that time so sick. Just a suggestion for vets and future vets out there. To be fair, my vet is amazing and I know I could have called if I had any concerns, but Angel did occasionally stop eating for a day or so so I didn't think this time was any big deal.

I'm going to need to watch this at least a couple of times, but I get it. (It's just a LOT of info to synthesize while speed-listening.Lol.) I didn't know pets could become diabetic. Does this happen even when feeding them regular pet food??

Sometimes yes but it's also caused by kidney infections and when the body of the animal doesn't react to the insulin being produced properly

Thank you for sharing this. My (male) cat is turning 10 this summer. At his last vet visit his sugars were slightly elevated. The vet was not overly concerned about that, she attributed it in part to the stress of the drive there. He is a big chonker and I am trying to get him to lose weight. Is there anything else I can do to prevent diabetes for him?

Yeah my cat was hospitalized for this but he also had undetected large cell feline lymphoma so he didn't make it sadly. Because a tumor caused too much damage internally.😿
