For reference: I am 5’2” and my measurements are as follows, upper bust 36”, full bust 40”, waist 32”, hip 38.5”
Hi Whitney- like you I still use a trusty safety pin for pulling elastic. Experience has taught me to attach a safety pin to the opposite end too, just in case the elastic gets pulled in too far. Thanks for the tutorial today!

I love the elastic in the back. I really liked going all the way around the waist band with the top stitching. Looked very nice. Also the bias tape looked very pretty too.

Did the size 16 waist band fit your size 10 shorts waist because you didnt sew the darts in?
Also the video finished a little early

I have the same question about how the size 16 waistband fit on the size 10 pants. Did you grade up in addition to leaving out the darts? This is very helpful for me because there is only about 5 inches difference between my waist and hips (on a good day). Thank you!
I actually had excess because I added to the size 16 waistband just to be safe. I just cut the excess off at the end. I am so sorry that cut off early. I can’t believe I didn’t catch that!

This is going to be a game changer!! Definitely doing this with mine and adding the fly front. When you have the innertube tire all the way around in the area the buttons are doing buttons is just asking for gapping! I'm going to have to grade out in the hip beyond the largest size on the pattern to give me enough ease so doing the elastic insert will help with the band fitting to my body better!

In the video it looks like the side seams of pants and waistband are lined up. So the size 16 waistband was actually used only for the back waistband? The front 2 pieces being size 16 would give you the extra length you wanted, too.
I actually just used the size 16 waistband and cut off the front excess at center front when I sewed it in.

Did you interface the facing where the elastic goes in, seems like it would be stiff for the gathering. I’m attempting this, thinking of doing a false placket with a side zip to keep the look but avoid the buttons over the belly issue. I don’t have much of a dart due to my shape so hoping the small darts work with the elastic back.
I do not interface the back waistband on this, just the facings for the front waist band pieces. I think doing a false placket with a side zip is a great idea!

Do you change the waist band to straight band or used the contour front band?
I use the straight waistband.
Would it be possible to keep the darts in and add a short section of elastic on each side while keeping the back and front straight?
Yes, but you would need to add to the sides to accommodate the extra that the elastic would be gathering in!

How do you make a size 16 waistband fit into a cut out size 10 lower half?

I just didn’t sew the darts in the back. The elastic gives me the shaping I need. The darts are quite large so omitting them gave me the extra width I needed.
Just thinking of making some shorts, I have the pattern too! Is this part 1 of 2?
It’s the full tutorial. Something happened at the end 🙄. The only thing that was cut off was me sewing the second side in like the first and then topstitching the waistband gaps closed. I’m so sorry about that!
