Helen Sjöholm is a swedish singer. This song is from the musical "Kristina from Duvemåla". It's about leaving Sweden trying to find a new life in US about 150 years ago. Written by a the two gentlemen in ABBA (Ulvaeus and Andersson). You can find an English version on UA-cam.
In this song, Kristina, played by Helen, has lost one daughter in Sweden due to famine, had to leave parents, friends and country to save the rest of her kids, and now she's lost a baby in childbirth. The doctor has also said that she's broken inside so the next child will kill her. Finally she can't see the point worth it all and turns to God to say the little word she never have neither thought nor spoken. IF.
You should check out Peter Jöback singing "guldet blev till sand", from the same musical. These are the the two most famous songs from the musical, and "guldet blev till sand" also became a huge radio hit in sweden when it came out.
The story is in a time in Swedens history when there was very much poverty and starvation in the 18 hundreds. One fifth of the population emigrated to the US. Many had a dream of an easier life but wich couldn´t be futher from the truth.
Thanks for react to Helene Sjöholm and this Masterpeace made by the ABBA guys Benny and Björn. I am sure you will find english songs in her repertoar too. By the way, this song is in Swedish. 🎶🎶
Hi, I don't know how much you know about the piece, so here is a bit of info. The song is from a musical, Kristina från (from) Duvemåla, a made up very small village in deep poverty in Sweden. Written by the two Bs of ABBA, Björn Ulvéus and Benny Andersson. This is Kristina singing, and the the musical is from her point of view. She and her husband immigrated to America back after a famine in the 19th century. I believe it's around 1880's. Here she has just miscarried a child and has been told that if she attempts to have more children she will not survive. Of course she isn't happy with "Gud" (God) and is somewhere between doubt and desperation talking to him, using the familiar "du" you (second person singular) as you can hear in the lyrics. Helen Sjöholm is generally thought to be one the best musical singers we have in Sweden, and she is in the habit of having good diction. (Our language has that built in.) I agree her voice is phenomenal, as is her characterization. The role was premiered by her, and I do believe it was written for her too. Yours, Ann
This song is about the seeds of non-belief and doubt on organized religion being sown, after poor people had been told for so many centuries that the injustices they faced on earth would be evened out in heaven (which solidified the class system since people believed that something better was waiting for them after death).
Peter Jöback "guldet blev till sand " from the same musical . It is about the brother of Christina (Helens ) husband . He and his best friend went to seek for gold ..hug from Sweden
Listen and see Helen Sjöholm & BAO -“Story of a heart“. Song was written by B. Andersson & B. Ulvaeus(ABBA) and recorded by Benny Andersson's Orkester(BAO) for their first compilation album of the same name (2009)
The wonderful language Swedish 😊. Quite melodic language and we don't have long way to go to find our "vemod" (melacholic, longing, heartbreaking, sadness but still a "belonging" feeling) I belive. A question to you, how does the language sounds to you? As it is a germanic language (as English and E is also created from German, Frensh and old nors=Scandinavian language), I belive you can understand some as måste-must. But how does it sound? (like the Swedish cheff in the Muppet show 😂?).
This is just an amazing performace, the voice and orchestration, the lyrics, mimics and the stage presence. It is one of ABBA Björn and Bennys best songs ever!

BJÖRN and BENNY from ABBA wrote this musical ' Kristna från Duvemåla' i hope knew before you listened to this song.
Swedish is so nice
She did an English version of this but the translation unfortunately didn't do it justice. It's called "you have to be there".
You should listen to, "Gabriellas sång", "Vinterhamn" , "Som skapta för varann" and "Du e min man".
Listen to Helen Sjöholm "Gabrieĺlas song"
DONT TOUCH YOUR MOUSE!
I really wish those reacting to this would do some basic research first so they have some background to it
What's the deal with moving the mouse all the time? Very distracting, otherwise a good reaction.
Great mouse moving through it. 10/10.
