Very effective technique that has worked for a long time, this video does an amazing job of teaching and explaining it! Highly recommend to all swimmers :)
Thank you for posting this. I have lost 200+ Lbs in a year by doing 100 minutes of water aerobics 6 days a week and know I have been taught free style swimming and I am amping up my workouts and shedding the last 100 lbs off before excess skin removal. People ask all the time if you can loose weight swimming.... DUH, ah yeah!!! Thank You again for helping me to hone my skills.
This is awesome. I just started swimming classes and we will be working on breathing. However, I will be out of town and will miss two classes. I would love to go back and show her what I learned and practiced on my own!
I have a hard time with being consistent, I can have a perfect form and good breathing at first, then my mind overthinks it and I end up stressing out and begin to panic, and eventually gas out because of a mistake -_-
I've experienced the same, however the best thing I did was to swim slowly, for one it conserves energy and actually gives you time to think about what you're doing. I found I swim OK swimming slowly as my stroke seems more efficient. As long as you continue to keep your legs together close to the surface while kicking, your body will be streamlined and that makes for easier and more comfortable, natural breathing. Also when you exhale and you have turned your face to take your breath, ensure that all the water left in your mouth or nose is blown out fully before you inhale again, that way you have good air to exhale when your face returns to the water. I hope this helps and very best of luck.
Philip Brown Wow, thank you. that was very helpful. Really hard to find helpful comments with all the rude insulting people on youtube haha, I'll try this out.
Man, i really want to get better at this and this video just showed me some things im doing wrong. I didnt know you had to breathe out through your nose. I also get scared and hold my breathe too much. In addition, I'm right-handed and have trouble breathing from my left side. So many things wrong, but i wont give up.
Always forgot when to breath in and when to breathout... thats is my greatest problem now.. with this tip i could practice and use the method in the future
Don't let asthma hold you back.I just got diagnosis with it six months ago.believe me I know that feeling I was ready to quit my mixed martial arts and all the other things I did' but my doctor told me don't give up and I worked out slowly and slowly built my endurance up now I do insanity and I'm a lifeguard do don't give up and keep on trying also swimming is a great support for asthma it has controlled breathing and the air is most ..ps I'm 15
mannnn, i've been trying the side kicking drill and like one of the other guys who commented down below, my head is still under water when i'm trying to breathe in: NOT fun :) gave up on this drill but i'll go back to holding the wall and practicing. thank you for these videos.
The kickboard makes a HUGE difference when first learning. I learned how to swim as an adult and without a kickboard, I am not sure if I would have learned as easily.
I struggle so much with breathing despite trying for a long time, I find it easier to use a nose clip and just focus on breathing through my mouth, I inhale out of the water and exhale in the water using my mouth. Is this ok to do?
Just started swimming again for the first time in 20+ years. I never swam laps as a kid, but now I'd like to try and get some low-impact cross-training. Breathing is a big problem for me, on top of apparently being out of shape for swimming. I think I'm blowing out too much through my nose and forcing the next inhale before I'm really ready. Feel like I'm always gasping. I'll work on your drills here.. thanks for the tips:)
relaxing is the most important thing to breath, am just like you, i followed all those steps and it didnt work, but when i followed them again with relaxing my body every time i inhale, it goes fine, just dont do any move or any stroke while inhaling, relax, rotate, inhale. :)
Thanks so much. I'm still at the panic-stage. Not total panic, but it just isn't down pat yet. I love your advice and I'll be thinking of it this coming workout! You're the best:)
wow well done I want to lose 60 pounds but stopped going swimming because I was embarrassed about getting fat and having stretch marks, now I have to find somewhere else to swim because the old place got knocked down
I disagree with only moving the head to breath. You need to treat your body as one unit and initiate the roll from the hips to take a breath. So the hips lead the roll to position the head and mouth to take a breath and the head leads the roll onto the front. Float, keep the hips up by relaxing the neck and letting the head float. You only need to use the muscles you require as much as you need to perform the stroke. It's all about taking concious control of what you do unconsciously.
I only recently learnt swimming and while I can easily exhale through the nose when I first start, when I take my head out to get more air, when I bring it into the pool again, I find it extremely difficult to exhale through the nose and wind up holding my breath until I bring my head back up and eventually have to stop because I end up getting water either up my nose or swallow a little bit of it. Any way to correct that?
Im using a static swim resistance belt and im finding it difficult to side breath during my freestyle stroke. I have to lift my head higher out of the water because im not making a head wake to take my breath in. Its getting frustrating. I will figure it !!!
I had the exact same problem. I had no idea why I was always swallowing water. I know this will sound vague to you (as it did to me when I had that problem), but I believe that you just need to practice. Few months ago, when my coach was telling me how to breathe, I would still fuck the whole breathing up. However, after a lot of practice and visualization, I can properly do it (and dang it feels good). In conclusion: practice + visualization is what enabled me to properly breathe in freestyle. I don't believe I'm being very helpful here, but I just wanted to provide an insight and encourage you not to give up! Have a good day
I am just sharing my experience and I am not sure if I am entirely correct here. But in most of these lesson videos they don't emphasis on the importance of your leading arm. Your leading arm should be stretched all the way with your legs stretched and your toe pointing backwards. Imagine if you are trying to grab something with your leading arm, it should not drop in the water and not be folded but stretched. This will actually give your body the balance it requires when rotating your head to side breathe. The reason why we tend to swallow water while side breathing is because we either drop our leading arm or don't keep our body legs stretched.
Den Yuan I kinda agree, same for me. You can control exhale speed with the mouth. The problem is when I turn my head to breathe, wouldn't I be more likely to swallow and choke on water?
hi i tried this but for some reason i still run out of air. Its hard to keep going the entire length of the pool for me. I get winded really quickly. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Every Problem Have a solution ... and no one is good at anything by birth .. What makes a man good is PRACTICE ... So PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and HARD PRACTICE ...
To learn that.......you have to be very young.........before...10 years old....I have been swimmer instructor during 40 years in France...people who look the videos must know that........I am 67 years old today .. I continuous training two time each week..........and when I see people swim ....I see immediately if this person have done swimming when she was young. .also when they are 90 years old
I followed the instructions of breathing but with kicking the board but my comrade notice that I have been use to my right hand more than the left I need a solution before it 's too late help me please! !!!!!!!
{"Both the local, YMCA and the Salvation Army has swim classes. Both are sponsored, Red Cross Swimming Certified Programs. Their, timeline can meet your, needs! So, just get there & have a good time learning how to swim, correctly! That's, it in a nut shell."}
How can you breathe with your mouth when your mouth is half inside the water and half outside???? I just don't get it! How could that be possible?????????
Are you taking a breath in and then letting it out as soon as you bring your face back onto the water?! So you are swimming with no air on your lungs!? But that makes it harder to stay afloat! I feel like there is something missing. btw, I really liked your free style swimming mistakes. My biggest challenge is breathing
Making a pirate mouth like arghhh is just silly! You can open your mouth normally and still avoid water in your mouth if your head is properly aligned with your body. This is possible because as your head cuts through the water, a bowel wave is created leaving a small gap in front of your mouth. Also notice when you are just standing still with your head sideways with 1 goggle in the water, you can still breath through your mouth with water partially inside your mouth.
Are we supposed to breathe on one side only, or should it be on both sides? Currently I only rotate on my right side to breathe, because that is how I have been taught.
It depends on the stroke to breath ratio. I suggest doing 3 strokes and breathe. If you do 2 strokes then breathe you will be only breathing on one side
are you gonna breathe out through you mouth or nose? Because she said: out through nose, but on the video, it says out through mouth. please help me :D
Tried side breathing for the first time today and it's really hard, because my legs keep sinking so bad, that I stand up after 10 meters or so ..... yeah, still practicing in the kiddie pool (yikes) Why is this happening and can someone tell me what I need to do different?
If your legs are sinking you might be 'lifting' your head up. You should only 'turn' your head. You should also slightly turn your body. It's going to be difficult at first, thats just how it is, but keep practicing and you will learn it! Good luck!
David Høyer when do we actually have to breath out? is it before we want to take a breath during a head turn or immediately after the face facing down again?
You exhale under the water as soon as your head is in the water. If you start exhaling while your head is over the water you will have less time to inhale. Don't hold your breath when you are swimming freestyle, always exhale when your face is under the water. If you are breathing every 2 strokes, you should exhale fast, and if you are breathing every 6 you exhale slower. When you lift your head out of the water, you should have exhaled pretty much all your air - the little air you might have left, should be gone fast before you take a breath, but really you don't want to waste time exhaling when your head is over the water, because this is when you inhale. Hope that answers your question:)
Thank you for your response. I just started swimming last month and learned breathing last week. It is very hard for me to time my breathing. I'll try following your advise on my next swim :) Thank you again for your advice

Thanks for the explanation about breathing, head position determines body position thanks for the explanation
I was having problem while breathing and i'm sure this is gonna help me a lot. Thanks!

I have swimming practice in 1 hour and am so glad i checked this because I have trouble breathing but now I'm ok
Very clear explanations and demonstrations. Thanks heaps!
Thanks for the vid!!! Great tips. Love the pirate reference 🤣.
This really helped alot.I just started lessons and am doing well but i cant get the side breathing part.I will try holding on the wall to practice.
fantastic videos, clear, easy explanations, thanks for making and sharing them!
Exemplary, explanations, thanks a lot. I should "master" this by the end of this week

You're supposed to breath on the side you're dominant ( idk if u understand bc my english isn't good )
great demonstration. one can follow easily
Always forgot when to breath in and when to breathout... thats is my greatest problem now.. with this tip i could practice and use the method in the future
Great video! I like how it had drills!
How often should you get fresh air? Is there a certain number of strokes between each breathe that is optimal? Do some people breathe on every stroke?
This is sooo very helpful. Thank you!
Don't let asthma hold you back.I just got diagnosis with it six months ago.believe me I know that feeling I was ready to quit my mixed martial arts and all the other things I did' but my doctor told me don't give up and I worked out slowly and slowly built my endurance up now I do insanity and I'm a lifeguard do don't give up and keep on trying also swimming is a great support for asthma it has controlled breathing and the air is most ..ps I'm 15

one very serious question - Doesn't water sticks to the contour of face and finally ends up going a little bit inside the mouth?
Nishant Gupta no
Nishant Gupta .
This happens to me. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong
apply oil to the face before jumping into water
Great video! Thank you!
Great video, thanks!
Great Video..!!
do you have to breathe only on one particular side or on any side whenever you feel like you need to get some air?
To practise should i use board or paddles?
I will try this. I have learnt all other aspects now just I have to time my breathing cycle. Tough I can swim in one breath.
Please do a video of how to wear the cap and googles
thnx! this video really helped!
its really helpful. .thanks
Nice video! I like it; it will help me to swim! :D
ARRR... Gonna try this today..
did you ever try it lol
Thanks a million
should I always be either inhaling or exhaling, and is there a drill for breathing at home not in pool?

Arrr... :) ... nice tip ...will try this today....steal me a ship tommorarrr
I'm trying to learn how to swim and had difficulty with the stroke and the breathing... I will get it though
Why am I swallowing half the pool when I try to do this?
I had the exact same problem. I had no idea why I was always swallowing water.

heated pool?
hi i tried this but for some reason i still run out of air. Its hard to keep going the entire length of the pool for me. I get winded really quickly. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
keep going and dont give up!! try swimming slower until you can find a rhythm that works for you.
+Debra Romero will do. thanks
you can go on to the freestyle mistakes video
There's a mistake in the video. They say breathe out through your nose but it says "breathe out through mouth".
Its just typographical error. They say breath in through mouth and breath out tru nose.
Check again cuz she clearly says "breath out through your nose "
Every Problem Have a solution ... and no one is good at anything by birth .. What makes a man good is PRACTICE ... So PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and HARD PRACTICE ...

I need a solution before it 's too late

when i breath out through my nose underwater the water goes into my nose and i feel like to breath again. what is the proper method?

btw, I really liked your free style swimming mistakes. My biggest challenge is breathing
Alex Suave you breathe in as much as possible and begin to exhale once you come back in to water, slowly exhale from your nose and repeat the process.
most probably you lift your head up, rather than rolling with your head steady when your body rotates to that side
I had asthmas since I was in kindergarten but I am much better now

I will try next time I go swimming :)
The most proficient freestyle swimmer breathes on both sides - well that's what my swimming instructor has been telling me.
I can't breathe properly under water even I know how to!!! I keep running out of breath!!!
adjust how much inhalation you have - maybe a small sip, not a huge gulp
are you gonna breathe out through you mouth or nose? Because she said: out through nose, but on the video, it says out through mouth. please help me :D
Out through the nose, in through the mouth.
Whoever says otherwise is just plain wrong.
Through out mouth
Mladen Babic I'm struggling with that - but will keep trying
But then the water goes in my mouth... what do i do then...
Tried side breathing for the first time today and it's really hard, because my legs keep sinking so bad, that I stand up after 10 meters or so ..... yeah, still practicing in the kiddie pool (yikes)

ARRR!
I think so hard about the breathing that I stop kicking when I try to take a breath.
Man, I couldn't help myself from getting water getting inside my nose.
Goodness, I hate it when that happens. Hurts so bad.
practice nose breathing out standing in water 10 mins for 10 days, and if u cant - hold ur mouth with hand and do hmmmmmmmmm sound breath out with nose.
I feel like I'd get kicked for saying ARR but it could work!
ITS VERY HARD TO TRY
Hello! Another newbie swimmer here! I've been learning swimming since June (that's around almost 2 months) and currently my only other problem is breathing! :( I'm really scared of my legs coming down everytime I lift to breathe! I'm having a pretty bad time coordinating my hand and leg movements as well! :( Any help would be reallllly great!
I missed 1 point in recap, pirates are for real... Aaaarr
Arrrrr
Why nose breathing out is better than mouth breathing out ?
+Gunjan J Well, I do by mouth breathing out but I will try with nose breathing out. Besides, I do half face out of water so that can I see in side.
Gunjan J I know it's an old comment but it's so you can't accidentally swallow water if you breathe out with your nose there's no way to swallow water
Loneassassin333 thank you , you are 100 percent correct , I now do nose out mouth in breathing. with mouth breathing the point of reversal { breathe out to breath in with neck twist at the same time } invites water in the mouth. it becomes v difficult to half merge the face .
while using nose for out and mouth for in trains both of them for separate purpose and then no need to pull entire face up.
as beginner it's difficult to practice nose breathing , but once it comes it was best for me.
Thant's my story thanks.
