    Beginning sewer here, and thank you for these tips! I simply could NOT figure out why sometimes everything worked perfectly and sometimes (well, frequently!) the thread just slipped out of the upper needle. It didn't seem like it was snapping, and as a beginner I have a new needle, new [Gutermann] thread, and as far as I could tell I was threading it correctly. However, I falsely assumed that because my Singer has a little place to snip thread on the side that the length between that and the needle was the proper length for a tail. And it NEVER occurred to me that the thingy has to be as high as it will go in order to start sewing. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Liked and subscribed!

    Everywhere I looked, everyone said it’s the take up lever. Mine was at the top so it was driving me crazy as to why it kept unthreading! But thanks to you I realized it was because I threaded the needle from back to front instead of front to back. I used a threader because I can’t get the sewing machine to thread it with the built in feature so I decide to thread it myself and voila! I did it backwards lol thank you for saving my life!

    I watched your six reasons why the machine keeps unthreading itself. I seem to be doing everything right my machine is only 3 months old. So needle very new, good quality thread used. ($11-00) for one paid. It sews for about a quarter of a metre then unthread itself. Sometime also doesn’t pick up bottom thread.

    • @QuiltWithKim

      Hi Carmen, that’s sounding a little like your machine isn’t threaded correctly, particularly the bottom thread. Do you put your bobbin in on the top of your machine in front of your presser foot, or at the side where you pull down a ‘door’ to access it? Let me know and I’ll try and help. Kim x

    I never thought about how old the thread was. It's Guterman thread, so good quaIity, but mine is years old, nothing wrong with the machine or needle as I got it this week brand new. Also you said to change the needle every 8 hours? Is that if you are continuously sewing for that amount of time? Also do you mean "give that particular needle a break" or "throw that bugger in the bin" because this is going to be a whole lot more expensive if it's the latter lol 😂

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  Рік тому +2

      Hi Keira, Gutermann thread is high quality so it does last for a long time, but it will degrade eventually. The best way to tell is wrap it round your two middle fingers (sort of dental floss style!) and try to snap it. If it hurts your fingers whilst doing it, then it'll be strong enough. If it breaks easily and doesn't really hurt, then it's probably started to degrade. For your needles, yes, it's after every 8 hours of continuous sewing with one needle. It's rare that we'll be 'actually' sewing for a straight 8 hours, so you have to judge when it's been used for about 8 hours. After then, it will need to be discarded safely. Hope that helps!

    I'm a beginner at sewing. Is a portable sewing machine similar to the bigger machines?

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  7 місяців тому

      Hello, do you mean a smaller machine lovely, as 'most' machines are portable? Essentially, the smaller, lower cost machines have less functionality, and less bells and whistles, than the bigger machines. They will all do your basic stitching in a straight stitch and probably a zig zag stitch too. The bigger machines will have more space to fit a quilt in it for quilting, and may have extra features such as embroidery and/or digital design. It really depends on what you'd like to do with your sewing as to which machine is best for you. Have you watched my video on choosing the best machine for you? Let me know if not, and I'll give you the link if you think it might help. Kim x

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  10 місяців тому

      Hi Jeanine, so sorry for the delay in reply, I had a close family bereavement. There are a number of reasons why your thread breaks, but the most common is that the upper thread is not feeding through the machine properly so you need to make sure it's threaded correctly and running freely. Check it manually first, then do a few gentle stitches using your hand wheel to see what happens before moving on to using your foot pedal. Let me know how you get on. Kim.

  • @2KITTIES-CLRR
    @2KITTIES-CLRR 2 місяці тому

    There is at least one more reason why your needle keeps unthreading itself which i have a problem with at times because I forget about it. And, that is this: When you lift up your project to cut the threads, you can sometimes pull it up too much, causing tension to be between your work and the needle. When you cut it loose, that will cause your thread to pull back and come out of the needle almost everytime. Just wanted to letcha know about that. 👍😍❣️😻

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  2 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely; there are lots of reasons why machines unthread themselves; I've tried to focus on the most common reasons that beginners experience in this video. One day i shall record 'Episode 2' with all the other reasons 😃

    Hmmm...got one minute into this video and learned that it matters which way the needle is threaded. I am threading mine back to front because I'm using a little threader tool. Interesting...I wonder of that's my problem. Very frustrating!

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jay, there is definitely a correct and incorrect way to thread your needle and it’s always front to back; it’ll come unthreaded if the other way around. A little tip for threading (instead of using the little threader tool) is to snip the end off your thread at 45 degrees, then lick your finger and wet the back of the eye of the needle. Offer your snipped end of thread to and through the eye and the wetness will draw it through. It works 99% of the time and is less fiddly than the threader tool. Hope that helps 😊 Kim x

      @@QuiltWithKim Hi Kim - Thank you so much for your reply. I'm quite excited about learning to use a sewing machine, but I'm bumping into a few of the common issues that beginners face. The reason I pulled out grandma's old machine was because a friend of mine would like to make some curtains for his home. Somehow, I got into the middle of it and here I am. I'm confident in my abilities though. Once I master the actual function of the machine, I'd like to move onto some practice projects and then the curtains themselves. Would you happen to have any video on either? Thanks, Jay

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jay, first up that's great you've given a new life to an old machine! Have you changed the needle in your Grandma's machine by the way? They need changing every 8 hours of sewing or at the start of every new project. You also need to swap them around depending on the thickness of fabric you're stitching through. I have a whole bunch of videos for beginner sewers that are all in one playlist (Sewing Essentials) if you go to my channel's home page, you'll find the playlists there. The projects I have tutorials for are for quilters which I'm not sure will help you very much (although I have a few non quilting projects coming up in November and December); do you know what you might fancy making? - or do you need a bit of guidance of 'what next'? One of my male students was recently berating the lack of channels and tutorials for men learning to sew, so I would be very interested to hear about your experience. Kim x

      @@QuiltWithKimHi Kim - Just so you know, I'm using an old Singer 6235. I'm not sure you're familiar with that machine or not. It's very cool. I was in a quilting shop in town today and I mentioned the machine make and model to the lady owner. She loved it. She said it's a workhorse that I should take care of. She said it's got all metal parts inside and it should last generations. All I need to do is give it a good internal cleaning and regreasing and it should be good to go. The reason I mention she was a "lady" owner is because she was a bit surprised that a man was so interested in sewing. Personally, I love the idea. I've already repaired two pairs of pants just this morning. It's a very mechanical process that I find fascinating. To answer your question, I haven't changed the needle. I'll have to purchase some and do that. I also need to buy some new thread because I think the stuff I'm using is just as old as the machine itself. I noticed that it was breaking quite often. I swapped in some thicker thread and I had excellent luck with that. Also, I now thread the needle properly, front to back, and that's helped with the unthreading issue I was experiencing. That and the thicker thread cured my problem. Basically, right now, I'm interested in fixing holes in things. I have a pair of Carhartt pants that has a wear hole in the crotch that I need to fix. I just ironed on a patch that I'll follow up with some thread. I have another pair of pants with the same problem. I think that's what guys are interested in the most - fixing things. Beyond that, like I said, I'd like to help my friend with his curtains and then maybe start making things. Pillows and other things - who knows. I'll check out your playlist. I'm sure I'll find some good stuff. Strange for a guy like me who cuts down trees and fixes cars to want to make pillows. Who knew? Thanks for all your help. Jay

    • @QuiltWithKim
      @QuiltWithKim  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jay, one of my best students is a man with an engineering background… there’s absolutely no reason at all why men shouldn’t be interested in sewing! I’m all for it 🥰
      So as far your needles are concerned, this video will help: What do the sewing machine needle numbers mean?
      ua-cam.com/video/6GWJp6ogVdg/v-deo.html
      Thread, as you’ve found out, degrades over time. Standard sewing needs a 50 weight (“50 wt”) thread. This are normally referred to as Sew All thread. For most projects, you need a polyester thread … Gutermann is a go-to brand for most people and you can’t go far wrong. I’m sure I’ve covered thread in a video somewhere but can’t find it right now, so I’ll have to look at my spreadsheet tomorrow.
      For mending trousers, you’ll need your 50 wt polyester thread and a 90/14 or 100/16 jeans needle.
      For curtains, same thread and a 90/14 universal needle.
      By the way, Schmetz tend to be recognised as the top brand of needles. Needles are universal. If you need to know how to change them, I’ve got a video on that too… let me know what if you can’t find it.
      Kim x

      😄 Well, I'm glad we got your mum's machine working; one of two isn't bad! A couple of other things to do with your machine: completely unthread and re-thread; use a different brand of thread (even if a quality brand, some machines throw a hissy fit over a brand they decide they don't like); and if all else fails, book in for a service depending on age. (The machine, not you 😉). Let me know how you get on. Kim x

      Oh no 🙁 Two other things you could try are adjusting your tension, or ensuring that the top spool is not on too tight and the thread is the same weight too and bottom. Failing those, it might be worth having an experienced sewer or local sewing tutor use your machine and there’ll be able to tell you where the problem was is. It’s possible that your machine may need a service but I’m sure there’s an answer before you need to do that. Let me know how you get on. Kim.

    My thread keeps coming out of the uptake lever while the thread is still in the needle. Why does this happen

      Hmm, have you got a gap that you slide the thread in to on the lever? If so, your thread may not have got in far enough.

    I put the lever at the top but I keeps unthreading itself idk what I’m doing wrong :/

      Hey Suki, make sure you have a long tail out of the back of the needle as well…try that along with your take up lever positioned at the top, and let me know how you get on. Kim x

      Hi! Tysm for the reply! Turns out my thread was coming out the front of needle rather than the back 😅 I got it to work tho! Again ty

      Oh no 😢 Just a thought…. try changing the brand of your thread? Weirdly, sometimes machines throw a hissy fit over the thread you use, even if it’s a well known quality brand. Swap out to another quality brand and see how that works. Let me know how you get on. Kim x

      @QuiltWithKim  Рік тому

      If yours is a treadle, then yes, it may well do 😊 Generally the vast majority of modern machines thread front to back.

  • @gillmahoney4742
    @gillmahoney4742 Рік тому

    It would unthread thr machine if the thread length was short yes
