Amazing to think that a guy with absolutely no leverage could still possibly get a deal worth $25M x 2. I wish I had no leverage like that where I work.
A lot of Chapmans offence came in the first month of last season. He came out hot and the broadcasters were pedaling the narrative of his "new at the plate approach". Then he dried up for the rest of the season.
Which makes his later numbers even worse since he propped up his numbers so much in April. I am so happy Jays didn't sign him as his strike outs with runners in scoring position were painful to watch and became far too common and almost predictable.
@ickson7256 Yep, his back half off the season was actually worse than what his season number say. I was actually happy with How biggio was playing replacing him when he was out with the finger injury. Biggio had been hitting well at that point once he finally started getting regular play. And was fielding pretty well too.
It seems Chapman made the same mistake Michael Conforto(another Boras client) did with the Mets several years ago turning down a $100 million contract prior to his walk year in 2021. Conforto didn’t get what he wanted and sat out all of 2022 after injuring himself training in the offseason. He then signed a 2 year deal with the Giants for 2 years $36 million with an opt out but didn’t exercise it because of his pedestrian numbers in 2023. Chapman is just simply a bad offensive player who strikes out way too much.

Not only that but he made just 12.5 million the last two years and would have been making more had he taken the A’s original offer. Great example of betting on yourself and losing. I’m not surprised at all though as an A’s fan, he massively overachieved those first two seasons. He never had a great bat in college or the minors and it took all of us by surprise that he was suddenly a stud when he got called up. The hip injury obviously didn’t help but the guy he was last year is the guy he was always supposed to be: average hitter/incredible defense. Funny enough Olson too was projected the same way, wasn’t supposed to be a great hitter but he made adjustments to his swing and approach unlike Chapman.

I'm no expert, but what I saw time and time again, was Chapman taking hittable fastballs down the middle for strike one and strike two, and then taking weak defensive swings at off-speed crap well out of the zone for strike three. I seriously wonder if he needs to consult an optometrist.
