I purchased the MR200 just to give it a try and so far very pleased and am thinking of upgrading to the MR600. I use the Smarty unlimited data sim (now £20) which works well and is much more stable than broadband in my area.

My parents live in the countryside here in Scotland. Up to about two years ago they got their phone calls and Broadband from BT, and TBH it was worse than dire. They paid through the nose for a promised service, and it was simply rubbish. BB was non-existent, the quality of the phone calls were poor...…I finally put my foot down on the matter and bought them a 4G Router from TP Link - MR6500v Model - Best decision that I've ever made. They now get usable and decent speeds for internet browsing and streaming media, as well as unlimited phone calls using this particular model of router too. Bought a GiffGaff SIM for £20 per month to go with the router, they now get unlimited calls and texts and 80gb of data to use on their computer (more than enough to satisfy their needs.)
It's a game changer if you live rurally and all your other internet options are poor or too expensive (or both.)
    --------
UPDATE Spring '22: Due to a severe change of circumstances, my parents are having to move house in a matter of months. With a lot of services and other stuff done online these days, as well as having to make endless phone calls, their 4G Router has more than paid for itself. In fact, it's been a blessing in disguise. They could have never done any of their online stuff successfully if they were still with BT using their telephone line. Likewise, their phone bills would have been through the roof, that past few months. At £20 per month for 80GB and Unlimited SMS and Calls, the router and Giff Gaff SIM have more than paid for themselves.
    _______
Goodbye BT. Expletively expensive it should be criminal. BT reminded me that MY contract with them was up for renewal in the next month...I did the same as my parents and bought a 4G router.....have never looked back.
Cheaper, faster, user friendly, portable, and I can change or end my plans with Smarty whenever I want. No long term contracts here.
Bye bye BT! Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I went with the same setup as you due to cost and I wasn't really sure if the whole thing would work in Rural Scotland. Tried all the providers sims but SMARTY was by far the fastest!! With the addition of a Ponyting MIMO external antenna my broadband speeds have gone from 8Mb Down and 0.75Mb up to 80Mb down and 27Mb up !! I'm well impressed but I did modify a sky dish to help with the dB signal numbers ;)

good vid, didn't know of Smarty, but they're covered by 3, which is great as they're one of the two which have good 4g coverage in this middle of nowhere village, i think ill be trying the TP link too as it seems to be the markets best value

Unfortunately my nearest transmitter (3) is 4.7km away and the signal I got on my MR600 was poor with 8mbps download speed. I've also discovered that 3 transmitters were not set for CA and although the situation has improved the rollout of CA may not cover everywhere.

After virgin media kept raising their prices and me paying nearly £50/mo just for broadband, I’m now running one of these routers off a Smarty SIM card. 23 devices, from laptops, Google homes and smart lights are all running beautifully.
My MIL is now doing this, and I have friends who are borrowing my router to test to see if it will work for them.
Honestly, my connection isn’t degraded compared to the fibre and it seems to be more stable.
This is the best money saving task I have taken on in a long time.

A Smarty unlimited sim works ever so well as a internet provider. However don't bother buying this or any other router. I just use an old 4g mobile phone and use tethering & hotspot to connect to the internet; this way I conect to not one not two not even three, but FOUR devices all at one time. A desktop windows 11, a wireless printer, a 43 inch TV and a laptop! All for just £20 per month....! 😄

Smarty is just Three, if you already have a Three contract you can get unlimited phone, text and data for £16 a month...
The routers cost about the same, so the question is do you have decent 4G coverage? If so it's a good option and you can get mobile battery powered devices too for the car...
Be ready to fit external arials if the signals not good enough...

@@intergrale4x4 I don't use Smarty anymore since just before Christmas . I'm now using a Huawei 5G Router on 3. I was with Smarty for 18 months & 4g+ was not an option at that time. It appears that 3 have open up the 800mhz band to enable the use of the 3 bands for carrier aggregation over the Smarty network earlier this year . This was not an option when I had my MR600.
I had both the MR400 & MR600 running side by side using 2 x Smarty sims & they both returned the same speeds 95% of the time with the MR400 topping the MR600 which it shouldn't have done !!

When i tried to use a smarty sim in this router I got a "no sim" error. Did you have issues configuring this too?

No I didn't, it worked right away. I'd check you've inserted it the right way round, and that you've activated the SIM as well.

Smarty is rubbish. I hought a zte mf971v router and smarty unlimited data sim. It only works in 3g mode. 4g will not work at all.
    Hopeless.

Could that just be done to coverage in your area though?

@@LucidComputerSolutions tried it in three different locations (it's my caravan router).
In fairness to smarty, it might be the router, so I've sent it back and might get one of these instead.

I use Lebara And they use the vodafone network and I get unlimited calls. Unlimited text and unlimited data for £2250. Just my opinion but I think they're better than smarty mobile. Because they used 3 network and where I live through does not work..

The choice is down to signal in your area. For example, where I'm based, Vodafone coverage is poor, but EE coverage is excellent.
