All war movies glorify war because they always show some degree of heroism and courage. This one doesn't. There are no heroes here, soldiers' lives don't count, courage doesn't make much sense, people are manipulated, others decide and ordinary people have no choice. This is the truth about war, though no one wants to openly admit it, and that is why history repeats itself.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED: in terms of how this man is describing an almost so called „German guilt“ and how a German should feel towards the first world war, or be perceived as feeling, regarding this war and movie is just wrong. He gave me that impression anyway. It can be seen why the Second World War could evoke the feelings of negative responsibility, guilt, shame, and whatever other feelings or emotions a person may have towards being German looking back on the Second World War. But not the First World War. Some may argue they should still feel bad from a German perspective about the First World War because it really was a huge factor for the emergence of the Second World War, so indirectly the First World War helped cause the Second War and thus us Germans should feel guilty. However, I counter that by saying if that is your argument, you are basically counting your chickens before they hatch. Since we know how the First World War played a big factor in the development of the second one we can connect those feelings. But the German people back then didn’t know that. So why are you feeling sorry watching this movie? Why should there be those emotions involved? You are allowed to criticize only with what they knew, not with what you know in the future. So because of that, the Germans during the First World War are guilty of what?… what did they do that was so individually bad that separated them from any other country in the war? You have to look at what the Germans themselves knew when they were getting into the war or fighting the war, and if you look into what caused the First World War and of all the factions and countries in it, you will realize Germany is on the same playing field as any other country taking part in the war. For those of you that dont know about the history of it, and want to know quick why Germany isnt the bad guy in WWI here ya go. Long story short for WWI, a man of serbian decent killed a pretty famous guy that was part of the German empire at the time. Germany told Serbia to do something in return for having their guy killed and then maybe we are even. and Serbia responded by saying, nah. So Germany says alright, and brings out the guns. everyone, including both sides and the rest of the world, assumed a short small war to just release the tension and then get back to their lives, no big deal. Well, every country involved had some agreement that if one country went to war, the other would help. Well next thing you know most of the world is now at war helping out someone else. these were through war pacts with whatever country, saying if you get involved we have to help you. So it goes from Germany and Serbia, to most of the World being involved. Then it gets really ugly because no one expected the advancements in war technology to make this war so brutal (machine guns, advanced artillery, gas, airplanes, an so on) they imagined a short respectable and honorable war as they imagined from years ago. Well a machine gun kills a lot of people and very quickly… so that didnt happen.. and no one knew how to adapt quickly, and no one wants to lose the war! so they grind it out, seeing who will give in first. Germany and their buddies give in first, so the british/french/americans label them as bad. since they were the bad guy in the war. But that does not mean anyone should feel like the Germans were special during the war and deserve to be the bad guys. They were only the „bad guys“ because the other team won. So I do not agree with the vibe and opinion this guy is pushing on how you should feel towards this movie and this historic event being German.

Good movie but not the Meisterstück the first version of 1928 was.

I think the movie is fantastic, but I would love to know why the ending does not match the book. The title of the book points to the ending of the story making the story more meaningful, and heavy, full of tragedy. And Paul makes a decision (I think) for us to ponder and explore. We lose that with this movie.

@@The1Waiter-gk4szyou literally are doing the same by calling everyone who is not on the right "far-left communist" Do you think that's communism what's happening in countries with left-wing goverments? Definitely not. You're being a hypocrite. You compelety leave out the fact that people can be rightists AND liberals. Also terms change over time, the definition of "far-right" doesn't have to be the exact same it was a hundred years ago. World changes and it would be easier for you to do too. The hypocrisy is insane

Has a problem with right-wing politics but no comments on the reason people vote right-wing. Governments haven't learned if you massive decline the quality of live of your citizens, they will look for change as they don't really have anything to lose.

Sometimes the right wing is the progressive and sometimes the left is. Saying far right is always more evil than far left is insanely idiotic when you take an large over view of the world. Today the far left is obsessed with totalitarianism, endless wars and putting us closer to Nuclear Winter. The right answer is in the middle and governments with strong checks and balances that don’t allow one party to end the world.

This kinda sounds like revisionism. Like they inject their own political bias into this story.
Instead of just showing the hardships of war (like the novel did) they also intend to lecture modern audiences on the evils of nationalism or such BS.

You are right I guess; this movie might be a masterpiece in some ways but ( I have not seen it) German film-makers and others in the media very often tend to be wanting to educate their audience instead of letting their work speak for itself....that is typically German and I hate it (not unlike many Germans who just don't want to be taught by some kind of missionary ( woke people are called "Gutmenschen" in Germany, that says it all) how and what to think or feel) ; but...I still have to see the film
