- In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, the guys share what's going on behind the scenes as we start to hit late February. It's that time of year where sheds are starting to hit the ground, and we start to plan our off-season projects. Year after year, we find what works and what doesn't on our farms. This is our opportunity as hunters to respond the right way, and plan for another deer season. What about protein supplement blocks and mineral/calcium stations. Would help restore whats lots from rut when they need it the most. Get a jump start before those antler start growing soon. Not sure if you guys have covered that stuff on your podcasts or not.
So we use a lot of blocks in the off-season. I’ll feed sweet feed as well sometimes in march to get them thru a tough month. The reality is most of the nutrients will pour thru the browse
@@HUNTRPOD for sure. Cattle supplement blocks are the best this time of year. It's hard when there's no browse though and even worse coupled with high concentrations of deer.
So do you guys actually think your good at hunting or do you just want your papa to support something you think your good at? I learned more about hunting than you will ever learn by the age of Ten than you will ever learn in your entire life

Talking about displaying special sheds. Last year I finally pulled the trigger and did something I thought was ridiculous, had my two best sheds displayed in a shoulder mount. After seeing the end result, pretty much brought that deer I chased for 5 years back to life, worth it.

Had a 94” and 89” from him and since I screwed up and sent an arrow right over his back in 2018 figured I’d never see one like him again so may as well.

Look into birdsfoot treefoil. Great for deer and its a great hedge against drought and bad soils.
They plant a lot of that in reclaimed strip
I read an article about deer sheds that was saying that when the peticle is rounded out verse concave it could be due to good nutrition or lack thereof.

You guys have acknowledged that access is one of the biggest problems, and if we outlaw baiting then access will become a bigger problem because all of the small parcel hunters will now be competing to acquire the larger parcels and public lands that everyone is fighting over. Also, serious hunters like us see the benefit of eliminating baiting, but we are a minority. The average hunter just wants to hunt 10 times a year and dump a corn pile and see some deer, put a doe in the freezer and hopefully kill a buck every other year
It’s a hard argument, most think banning baiting will lose hunters so it would create worse access
Love shed hunting. Have around 10,000 acres of permission ground in west central IL. Miss the good ol days before land leasing took over.

Gettin super excited about shed season, February 3rd was first walk this year, found a fresh 7 point match set 1.5 miles in, close to 30 miles now, few deadheads and old sheds. Definitely early still but its so hard not to go out when the weather is this nice in February!
February 3rd was my first walk last year too down in Washington county, found a fresh spike and fresh 4 point set. Had a decent year last year, 75 miles, 15+ antlers. Staying around home in Crawford county this year, hoping for close to 60-70 miles again
Awesome,I have been out twice and found 4 so far. Nothing big yet but I bumped 3 nice bucks last week in Illinois with racks still on...I pulled out before they saw me they just heard me..I'm hoping they stay in that area and I'm going back in a few weeks to hopefully find the sheds.
@@daveyboy8907 yeah i just went through one spot Saturday and found a little deadhead, tons of good sign marked a few spots i wanted to go through later, had a nice buck run out of there and cross the road yesterday morning on my way to work
I believe the term relates to building an outhouse out of brick. And what an Overkill that is. So not only are we talking about how structurally sound it is built out of bricks but then it's a shithouse, outhouse. Just showing how overbuilt, over the top, robust. Like a brick shithouse

I like the Ohio talk at the end. As an Ohio landowner resident I agree with the Kansas theory. I’ll buy a tag as a landowner in Ohio if it means a non resident has to draw and pays more money. Then revenue isn’t a discussion. Residents pay, non residents pay more on a lottery with the exception of leftover otc tags. Take baiting away and use iowas approach on it, that way 5 acre pieces can still draw deer but not essentially directly to them. That’s the closest to making everyone happy in my opinion.

I havent even begun to shed hunt and already found 2 deer dead from starvation here. Both doe.

@Leatherwoodoutdoors, Are you sure it's starvation? Studies have shown a deer can live for a month with no food at all- and a deer's diet is vast.
We've been cutting and burning for a few years and I didn't plant beans for the first time last season. I planted corn which mostly failed due to severe drought and we've always had clover and wheat. Basically only had fall foods and we had more bucks than ever. Enough we lost track. We are surrounded by ag and Im wondering if this setup held more bucks due to lack of social stress. Access has pretty much been dialed in but we also bumped very few deer all season.
I think the fall food is critical. If you have it you have the deer

My Kentucky place is LOW. Only 135 bucks killed in the whole county. Less than 30 does killed
@@HUNTRPOD wow. Yeah it's like 50-60 deer per square mile here in some places in Southern clarion/ northern armstrong. It's next to impossible to plant bean or corn plots just for deer. They just demolish it before it ever gets beans or ears. You'd have to plant lots of acres to get it to last till after the season.

Went out shed hunting a few days ago. Looking for a 3-3.5 yr old 10 point I've been keeping an eye on. Problem I ran into is, I jumped a few bachelor groups, all still holding both sides (mostly 1-2.5 yr olds).. I figured this was because of the acorn crop and better nutrition that they're holding much longer than years prior?
Man typically tied to nutrition health and testosterone. For sure less stress this year likely holding them tight

Just wondering with ur trad arrows from Easton. Did u have the inserts & feathers put on by them or did u do them yourself? Great one again. Always enjoy listening to u guys!
I bought those from 3Rivers Archery and I have them cut and place inserts. Super easy and like an extra $2 per arrow or something simple

I disagree with small parcels being ruined by eliminating baiting. The most success I’ve had in Ohio have been on less than 20 acres without baiting. Could be an outlier too but also lost 2 permission pieces this year to leasing

My buddy was going to come hunt with me here in Southern Iowa this past hunting season. He had 5 points but didn’t draw, I was amazed. Looks like it will be next season. I hope you guys draw but the amount of people putting in for specific areas has definitely grown over the years. Are you guys hunting public, private or both? I'm a landowner in ohio and I pay for a license and tags because Im hunting more than just my land. I also tag deer shot on my land even though I dont have to.

Like I've said before, if you dont want your deer getting killed over my corn pile, you best put up a high fence. BTW, I'm not a serious enough of a hunter to kill multiple bucks in multiple states. I'm satisfied with the opportunities that I have at home.
Ultimately they aren’t our deer, if you kill them legally congrats! We would never advocate for a high fence, that is not hunting
True, they are a shared resource and I get how frustrating it must be for individuals to invest large amounts of time and energy to foster healthy deer only for someone else to reap the benefit. As Chairman Rex has stated before, not everyone can give a large investment. That seems especially true when there are hunters trying to fill freezers to survive, the reality is there is much cheaper and accessible protein, when compared to "top end hunting ." Hopefully we can make enough room for everyone that wants to be a hunter.
Ultimately if it’s done right people should benefit from large landowners investing in deer herds. I cut my teeth hunting public next to large private and it for sure benefitted me!
So what did a couple young fellers do to have so much money to buy land and equipment?? Don’t have to be specific.

Actually it is, you don’t own those deer. They are in fact owned by the people of that state

You also cannot shoot those same wildlife any time you want on your own property legally either lol
I don’t live in Ohio, but don’t think getting rid of baiting is the right thing to do. i’m sure you guys kill a bunch of deer and big deer but the average hunter if lucky kills one decent buck if you get rid of baiting to me you will hurt hunting in the long run. There will be less hunters. With only being able to hunt limited amount of days to most hunters, it won’t be feasible and worth it. Most people don’t scout much or spend too much time in the woods unless they are hunting which I completely understand with working 60 hours a week or more.
Good opinion Carlos, it’s definitely not an easy answer. We don’t have to change anything and still have good hunting but it won’t help the access issue which is what is causing us to lose hunters

The deer that shed came from was not two years old. So it doesnt have much mass? That doesnt mean it must have come from a young deer. The sheer size points to an older deer
The body of the deer also looked incredibly young. No older than 3.5 for sure
Is Jeremy not a biologist?
Could be a 3 year old that just didnt add a ton of mass last year because of the drought/lack of nutrition, but i would lean more towards him only being 2 for having that little mass with that long of beams and that many points, Absolute stud if hes a 2 year old but if he is 3 i bet he throws a ton of mass between 3 and 4, hell of a Pa buck either way!
