  • I freaking LOVE this!! My wife & I teamed up to get this for me for my Birthday this year!! So awesome and I love her for that, woohoo. This is my favorite toy from my youth from 42 years ago. Unbelievable. And the irony is, this one was brand new and still SEALED in the box. Was a tough decision to open it, but I needed to fully reload my childhood once again, seeing that I am and always will be a BIG kid. It didn't really have that "New Car Smell" or "New Truck Smell", because it is so old and had a slightly moldy smell to it, but once it's aired out, it will be cared for beautifully and will remain as fresh as it is right now in this video!! I just opened the box TODAY and set it up and shot this video. So, if there is anyone else out there who had this toy in their childhood, feel free to comment and I hope this clip brings you back to that moment as well. Enjoy!!

    Thanks so much for this nostalgia. I went looking for this toy to show my daughter. I remember dreaming about this set in the SEARS catalog... then GETTING IT! I was so happy, for a few minutes. I remember the diamonds were always messy and chewing on them.

    Omg I've been looking for this. Forgot the name . I had this as a child. Diamond would fall into track, so my mom gave me beans to use. Thanks so much for sharing

    I was given this toy in 1974 as a present for my 4th birthday. I was so young when I had it that I barely remember it. I knew that my parents called it my "mining toy" and I think I was a little young for it at the time, particularly with those small parts that you kept sealed because of your son. I was just a little guy and it was very complex - I never quite got the hang of it and I had a lot of help from my dad, who was an engineer and probably liked this set quite a bit; it probably reminded him in some ways of manually operated toys from his childhood in the 1930s. As I recall, the toy was rather delicate. The chain broke and the toy was no longer functional by the time 1975 rolled around. It disappeared from my life so early in my childhood that I had only the vaguest of impressions of what it did, or even what it looked like. I remembered it was a craggy plastic landscape with different tracks and ruts, little metal balls, yellow vehicle(s) that moved the metal stuff around... but that was all I could recall, and I had no sense of how it really all fit together. Over the years when I thought about this toy I would realize how little I remembered clearly, and I became intent on finding out what it really was and what it really looked like. It was such a dim, foggy memory that my big 4th birthday present took on something of a mythical quality. For many years I have been searching the Internet for some mention of this toy. I was extremely gratified to finally find it tonight. I watched your video and it was a fascinating experience. I can't say "it brought back memories" because my own memories are so dim that there is very little to bring back from the void. But I'm certain that this was the toy that I had - there are so many features in common with my dim recollections, and the year of manufacture precisely fits, too. Thank you for making and sharing this video, and for showing all the features of the toy. Seeing the toy being demonstrated enabled me to play with this toy "for the first time" with the awareness and clarity of an adult. I think if I had been just a little older I would have gotten a lot out of this toy. Now thanks to your video I can have this toy back, and it's indestructible in the virtual world where it now lives. Thank you for this great public service!

      Wow, that is an awesome re accounting!! You were a few years younger then me when I first got it around when I was 7yrs old. And I myself, flipped out when I got it again, so I had to make this video to share for others such as yourself, seeing that mine was NEW out of a sealed box, some 42 yrs after the fact!! Thankx for sharing and I am glad it brought you back somewhat!! Cheers~

      Yes, that's so remarkable, to not only have it again but to be able to open it brand new out of the box - a total time machine. You might be pretty lucky to even get it at all, and with a set like this it might be missing a ton of pieces - and not only did you find it intact but totally new, sealed, and unused -- what a total time machine experience.
      I once had a toy called "Stunt Jeep" which sent a little battery-operated jeep up a ramp, flipped end-over-end on the descent, did a back wheelie and then a side wheelie... then it would repeat itself around the loop again. I had it in 1979, and the vehicle broke after a few weeks of play. I tossed it back at that time, and later wished I hadn't. Some of the engineering feats necessary to make it work remind me a little of the cleverness that was required to design this mining set. A couple years ago I had a very similar experience to yours, in that I was able to find a brand-new, unopened "Stunt Jeep" set from someone in Greece and I was able to assemble it from new once again. And then the same thing happened, the little jeep had some kind of defect in the gears; they were too delicate and would crack instead of being able to pull the weight of the vehicle up the hill. I dismantled it and tried to repair the gears but in the case of my 35 year old set, the plastic gears had become so brittle while it sat in the box that I never could get it running even one full circuit around the track. I still have the toy, but it's just a track with a jeep that doesn't run. I'd love to see a video of someone who has one of these and was able to show it running its full course. If you ever run across this particular set in your work I'd be very interested! I just discovered your channel but this set appears to be the sort of thing you might cover. Thanks again for the great video of the mining set.

    I had this set when it first came out.I loved it, but i remember my dad hated it. I remember him not enjoying putting it together on Christmas morning for one thing. Also, if I remember correctly, if you weren't careful with it the small plastic ore pellets would get in the track & jam the crank & cog system which moved the truck which meant dad would have to get it unstuck. And I'd LOVE to play with one of these again. I'll bet if found in good condition one of these would cost an arm & a leg too. They don't make great toys like these anymore. Thanks for posting something I didn't think I'd ever see again let alone remember!

      Hey cool. Sorry to hear about your Dad not being a fan. My Dad got me this originally way back in 1974. I don't recall any specific issues about the rocks in the track, but it does make sense. I got this set new in the box a couple of years ago, and when I opened it, I left the rocks sealed in the bag as is. But as you can see in the video, it was great fun just like that, without using the stones. Nice flashbacks to our childhoods for sure!!

    THANK YOU. For some reason I thought of this toy tonight, and found this video. I'm not sure why moving plastic tubes from one side of the set to the other was so cool, but it really was - and apparently it still is. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing this!

    I had this set when I was in third grade and loved it. Unfortunately the plastic chain broke, but I could still push the truck by hand. Hadn't thought of this in years. Thanks so much for posting and making it come alive again. I also had another crank controlled power toy called the Hairy Canary stunt plane. You'd crank the power plant and a kind of speedometer cable would turn the propeller to make it fly in circles. These must have been inspired by the energy crisis.

    The Hot wheels Road King ...how rare is this HW model? How many did they produce in 1974? And what is the value of the Road King loose?

    • @shytoons
      @shytoons  6 років тому

      You're asking the wrong person these questions. Go to eBay or go to Hotwheels Collector Forums etc... This was just a childhood dream toy for me and a chance to relive that some 40+ yrs later.

      The entire set can go for around $1000.00 brand new. The truck can fetch and easy $250.00 to $500.00 depending on the condition. I have a Hot Wheels Price Guide and it mistakenly lists just the yellow truck at a value of $2500.00?? Would be nice if that was accurate, but I really don't think so...
