so basically 怎么 is for how to do something or why something is the way it is like how do you go to school or how are you so happy and 怎么样 is for asking about the condition of something like how are you or how do you feel and can also be used as how about something like how about going on vacation.

It is very good question. 了解 means you know something or someone very well, 理解 means you understand someone emotionally. For example: 我理解的心情 。 such like : I understand why you are sad .
