  • The Rocky/Creed saga continues with Creed III, the first film with no involvement of Sylvester Stallone. While I think the story and direction are very refreshing for the franchise, some style and editing choices in the 3rd act hurt my enjoyment quite a bit.

I felt like they could’ve built up Adonis’s comeback from retirement better, aswell as how people perceived DAME as he rose to stardom. The final fight would’ve felt like it had more hype to it.

I like the part where they give Donnie a statue and Damian shows up and challenges him to a fight and tells Bianca to come to his Apartment if she wants to see a real man. The scene was really topped off perfectly when Clubber Lang put his jacket around Damian and said "That's my boy."

Dude... I am with you. I kept hearing about how awesome and unique the fights were, and I actually LIKED the idea of DBZ style fight scenes...but kept feeling like I was missing something.
The fight itself, all I saw were shaky-cams and a lot of really quick cut edits, into different angles, instead of just letting the camera settle and having the actors show off the choreography (a HUGE pet peeve of mine in fight scenes). Ryan Cooglar was especially great at this; the fights in the first two films were SO much better!

It's possible my opinion could change when I buy it on 4K to rewatch, but as a movie in the Rocky/Creed franchise, I wasn't impressed. It was also predictable as well. This was an extremely nuanced and fair review, Cody. Though I damn near LOVE this film, you did shed some light on a few issues that I too had “hiccups” with. I totally agree that it went by WAY_too_fast between act-2 and act-3. Felt like 15-20 minutes had been cut out, which was a shame. And it DID feel weird, if not downright UNbelievable, during one specific sequence, that Rocky wasn’t there (100% agree)
    S P O I L E R S A H E A D ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Anyway. We were 8 friends seeing it in a packed IMAX theater & absolutely loved the anime-style of the final fight! :-) But I totally understand that others will feel different. It WAS a huge swing! The way I saw it, when the anime-arena took over and we were left with Adonis and Damian alone, it was all inside of ADONIS’ head :-) This was how he saw it, fighting his long lost brother. The reason I saw it like that, was because of little Adonis in the movie, also being an anime-nerd. So it weren’t just Michael B. as a director, but also the character WITHIN the film, who loved anime. All the posters in his room during the flashback. Him comparing anime-characters with Damien, before his flashback fight, sitting there with a comicbook in hand :-) That’s why it didn’t feel weird to me. But it IS subjective, so if it doesn’t work for some people, I get it. However, We all loved it, and I truly thought the fight-sequences were incredibly well choreographed and badass :-) It felt so fresh again.
For the issues already mentioned, I can “only” give this film an 8.5 outta 10.. HOPING for an extended cut, where in between act-2 and 3 it gets fleshed out more :-) It COULD happen :-)
    Thanks for your review!

I reckon the anime fight style might actually make this more enjoyable for me personally, but I can totally get how it doesn’t vibe for some people. I really appreciate how you acknowledge it is objectively well-made and you have mad respect for MBJ, it just wasn’t your cup of tea.
I do hope the ONE anime you’ll give a chance to is the movie Perfect Blue, because I think you might actually enjoy it. It’s my top “don’t judge a book by its cover” movie to recommend and one I consider pretty accessible to non-anime fans. IMO, it’s one of the greatest psychological horrors, live action or animated. It’s got a very grounded story with an empathetic protagonist, and it doesn’t have the stereotypical “anime look” to it. And because it’s animated, it’s also very gory and doesn’t hold back on the graphic imagery.
Just a great movie in general that I believe is sorely overlooked because it falls under the genre of anime.

The final fight is probably the best in the Rocky franchise, never was i so invested. I like anime and i practice boxing since i was 19 (i'm 36) and i can apreciate it since this is a movie, the "punch" tribute to Ashita no Joe and Dragon Ball was amazing.
My only negatives is the music, which was the weakest from any Rocky movie and the training sequence.

I watched Creed 3 yesterday. I am a big fan of all the previous movies but something was just missing in this one.
There were quite a few scenes where I was thinking if they had just made it a little different then it would've been better. With all these added up, it made me a bit annoyed.
The music did not appeal to me at all, but it doesn't seem aimed at me.
I will add that I think I understand why the film was delayed because there was a big plot point shown in the first trailer that didn't end up in the final film. So I think they spent the time in editing to change the tone.

I understand they needed a replacement but that doesn't mean you put the title on the line. You could have put Dame in a non-title fight and it's still a massive opportunity to make a name for himself. Letting him fight for the title is perhaps the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in a Rocky film. It felt like they were trying to call back to the original Rocky, but at least Rocky was an actual pro. And they built the entire movie around the far fetched idea of giving Rocky a title shot. I liked the story. And the story was a story that Rocky really wasn't needed at this point. This was a story that started long before Rocky was in his life. This was Creed's most personal story, and the fighting scenes were filmed a bit different, but I gotta say that I really enjoyed the way he did it. At one point there was no crowd, it was just him and Damien, no crowd, just darkness around the ring, with just these two warriors, two old friends, just settling something that needs to be settled. I liked this movie overall. I would've liked to have seen a bit more tension between Adonnis and Damien. I think they let Adonnis mother off the hook a bit on how she is the reason why Damien hates Adonnis so much. He didn't turn his back on him his mother ended the connection. I was also let down by the ending. I would've preferred if Adonnis walked out the dressing room with Damien showing a sense of them reconciling their differences and regaining their lost friendship instead of the off putting "well you know where to find me" and then walks out. Still a good movie overall. Majors is a damn good actor as well. You should check him out in The Harder They Fall

Totally agree with the pacing issues with the third act. Loved the movie up until then. What was most jarring was seeing Damian win the heavy weight title and going from a guy who just got out of prison and probably doesn't have a dime to his name to heavy weight champ overnight and you get that scene where he calls out Creed on TV and he's in a fancy apartment with some GF. Like there should have been time jump there, or spend more time showing the rags to riches ark with Damian. Maybe that part of his life makes him more of villain as he starts hanging out with bad people. Maybe it would have been too much but I think showing more of Damián's rise and what that does to him as a person would have made for a better final act.

    • @faz1483
      @faz1483 Рік тому

I disagree it's the same thing as the first Rocky & Creed. Both of those films spent a lot of time exploring why those characters are given title shots. Those films earn it.
I think Creed 3 was absolutely trying to call back to the original Rocky, but it was sloppy. Dame is 0-0. You can't give a guy who has never had a pro fight a shot at the title. The film knows this and has to pull a "Tonya Harding" just to make it seem more believable. And the whole ordeal happens over the course of like 20 minutes. They also try to explain "everyone is afraid to fight the champ" which I don't buy either. There would be a dozen guys lining up for a title shot. Besides the $$$ you would get for a title fight, who is really scared of that guy? Not a big heavyweight champ.
I enjoyed the film overall! Not crapping on the movie. I have a lot of complimentary things to say. But Dame getting a title shot at 0-0 doesn't make sense. He's basically a towel boy who just got out of prison.

It happens frequently in MMA where they can’t really pick their opponent. It’d DEFINITELY happen in boxing where every boxer wants to protect their “undefeated” status by ONLY fighting people they know they can beat.

Jose Benavidez Jr look filled up for the role. But he's still too naturally small. At best, he's a 160 lber. I don't wanna talk about notorious ducks like Clenelo and Budrick Fraudford. Makes my blood boil lol
Dame should've been given at least 10 tune up fights to be believable he can beat a unified champ even with cheating. Being a golden gloves champ hardly means anything in the pros. I've seen Robeisy Ramirez and Loma took Ls on their early fights despite being 2 time gold medalists.
I had to turn off my brain upon seeing 2 fighters in HW with that physique going 12 rounds without their cardios suffering.
Seeing DeadZN in there made me chuckle lol
The story is still solid imo.

Cody, "that's not quite the way it works" is pretty much the franchise defined. I call it the Rockyverse, because it can't be our universe. As in, you can't have Apollo Creed AND Muhammad Ali in the same timeline. (which makes the Joe Frazier cameo out of place) I mean, Adonis and Danny "stuntman" Wheeler were both light heavies in Creed 1. Now at the beginning of Creed 2 they are both suddenly heavyweights AND fighting for the title? Yeah, it's not impossible but that isn't happening. On a side note, Rocky 3 really should have opened with the rubber match (third fight) between Clubber and Rocky. You don't usually split two fights then walk away from a third. That would have been sweet. Anyhoo, I'll have to catch Creed 3 and see what's what. I still cant' buy Adonis as a heavyweight after being set up as a light heavy, but also not impossible. Adonis would get mauled, but hey, movie gotta movie.

    SPOILERS AHEAD ! ! !
Imagine if Rocky had come to the funeral with ROBBY! Adonis is standing there with his black umbrella, greeting folks arriving at church. Out of a family-wagon (Robby’s) steps out Rocky and son. Adonis sees Rocky and walks over to him. They stand in front of each other, sharing a silent moment, before Rocky speaks softly; “Hey, Kid”.. Adonis; “Hey, Unc”. They hug, and Rocky introduces Adonis to Robby. The two shake hands. Robby; “Kinda feel like I already know ‘ya”.. Adonis; “Likewise, man”. Now, even those two shares a hug. Robby (in the midst of hugging Adonis) says; “So sorry for your loss.. I know what it’s like losing a mother”. Then they have their funeral, & at the following gathering, Rocky is still there with Robby. They all have a little conversation between each other, similar to what Adonis has with Bianca in the film (she, of course, is still there too, listening to it all) That way, Rocky understands what’s going on between Adonis and his old friend. Rocky wants to help Adonis get ready for the fight, to which Adonis might say; “I appreciate it, but this really isn’t your fight anymore”.. Rocky smiles; “Your fight is our fight, kid. We wanna be here for you, ‘ya know”.. Robby gently nods as well, looking at Adonis with empathy; “Yeah.. Home-Team”… Queue in the MUSIC, and we now have a training-montage where both Rocky and Robby organically has stepped in, to help out with the training, along with all the others (still including Drago’s son) By the time of the fight, Rocky and Robby could simply sit on the first row, along with Bianca, watching along. But at the final moment, Rocky will step over to the side of the ring, to give Adonis those final words of encouragement, before he goes full fury on Damian (just a little fan-fiction there, hehe)

    I watch the movie and overall I give Creed 3 a C.
I don't know if it was meant to compare or compete with Rocky 3 or 5, but it looked like it was trying to compete with them. But let's say it was not and it was a sequel all by itself. I don't blame Sylvester Stallone for not getting involved with this film.
For three reasons. And these are not my opinions, they are objective facts.
    1. The quality story was subpar.
It's simply based on a childhood bad memory that Adonis was trying to forget and his so-called friend came back to reinvent or continue. So he wants a title shot and obtained champion, but then wanted all of it that Adonis obtained and possibly more. That's what drove Adonis to want to fight him? That's not much of a storyline. Now if he threatened his family and did physical harm to his mother and or wife and child, then yes I could understand. But all he said was he wanted it all. That was not much of a threat.
    2. It was too dramatized.
Adding a dimmed lighting to the fight scenes, and adding exaggerated music does not make a quality film. The music was too much and it tried to add a heroic comeback attribute, but it didn't work well. There was nothing heroic about it. Just true bruised egos that want to settle a score from the past. There was better appropriate drama and quality story from the movie The Cinderella Man. Creed 3 definitely falls short of making a quality storyline impact.
    3. The final fight boxing match was not much to cheer or to brag about.
It was your average movie boxing match. Nothing special about it. Both of Rocky and Apollo fights put together carried more quality boxing and the reason to cheer.
Those are the reasons for giving Creed III a c. It wasn't a terrible film, but definitely does not hit the label of great or even very good. My strong advice to the directors and endorsements of this film - go back to the drawing board and try again.

Rocky in real life would never have a title shot. You have to fight many fights to climb up the ranking latter just to have a shot & if a opponent can't fight which this series has used the trope so many times from the original movie a high ranking fighter would get that spot. My biggest gripe with this movie is unlike most rocky or creed films the meat of the movie which is the build up was lackluster to almost non existent. If this were one of the rocky movies we wouldve got a montage of dame dominating guys, really showing he's intimidating and unstoppable, you know making him feel like a threat? What do they do instead? he wins one fight on a fluke and literally within a few hours went from walking around in rags to being a multi millionaire with a crew and hot chicks and a mansion. So you mean to tell me this guy wins the title and within what? a week bought a mansion, got a crew and basically has taken over adonises gym? what?! So he wins one fluke fight and I as the viewer am supposed to go "man johnathan majors is a fucking threat! I dont think adonis can win?" in reality I said "Mannn, Ik where this shit is going". Give me that build up, make this fight fucking mean something. Cut all the family bs and backstory and build this fight up, You couldve done the backstory in one flashback. Not multiple strung out over the movie, I liked one and two, imo this is the weakest. By the time the fight came I didnt care, bc I knew what was gonna happen. Nothing was built up outside the 15 min montage of them both training, and him cutting a promo on stephen as show which altogether was what? 20 mins of this almost 2 hour journey? thats all the build up we get. so nothing felt special enough for me to care. Where is the contract signing? wheres the dominant opponent montage? where are the actual cool training segments like in rocky 4? where the fuck is adonises struggle to get back? instead of making it a multiple day grind, over five mins he goes from getting this piss beat out of him by his sparring partner to just magically being a warrior. The entrances also, talk about taking the piss out of something. The first fight in the movie does it properly how boxing really does, makes the entrances a cool spectacle with great camera work and music. The second time around? they chose the most boring music, the most boring way of shooting it, and didnt even like make it feel special. This is the fucking main event of your movie, like what the fuck man? the movie felt hollow, and it felt like it was tryna jam a five pound bag of bullshit and tropes into a two pound opening. Please focus on the boxing and building that up, leave the family drama bullshit for the rom com I know you wanna do down the line Michael. Rocky not being here really doesnt bother me, its a continuation of the series and its almost 4 decades later, I dont see rocky balboa as a necessary component to make this movie work.

I got a question, if ya viewing was early then how bloody early was Sean chandlers viewing, as his review landed 6 days ago. I’m not being funny I’m asking a legitimate question.

Hard disagree with this one. I’m an anime guy myself and the fights were the best in the entire franchise for me. I saw someone saying all they saw were shaky cams. I was easily able to see every single slip, hit. I’m an anime man myself, and the fights were absolutely amazing to me. The freeze frames were so cool. I love the movement. The change in scenery actually immersed me more. This usually happens in anime to show the intense conflict between the two characters, how they’re clashing ideals as well as fist. The story with the past and how he felt guilty, how his daughter had to learn to fight when it’s needed, and not with hate.. which is what Dame was doing. Idk where I rate this one in the entire franchise yet. But yeah I disagree, Great movie.
Good thing most people love the movie though so we have a chance of seeing more. In this comment section, I personally think it’s a classic case of people wanting the same thing.

It does feel like alot was cut out inbetween acts 2 and 3. Either theres a 3hr directors cut coming or this was messy choices by MBJ.

Just got out of the theater and I honestly couldn't see anything majorly wrong with it: had some good fight choreography, the story was fast paced, the soundtrack was good, the acting was good. The only thing I could think of that didn't quite work was the leon story but I think that was more because of the short runtime so it was rushed to get to the Apollo/Damian beef. It prob would have been better to had 10-15 minutes and show them being bullied and then the full scene with Damian getting arrested and it would have been near perfect

I enjoyed many parts of it but would never call it near perfect. What about Dame getting a title shot when he's never had a pro fight? That doesn't make any sense to me. And the whole Dame pulling a Tonya Harding to make it happen felt a bit convoluted. The fight between Creed & Dame didn't need the title anyway, so not sure why they would put the title on Dame in such a convoluted way. It could have been a non-title fight. I mean Donny didn't come out of retirement to go after the title, he wanted Dame.

@Faz I don't see it that way the title was giving to Dam to show his true colors to Adonis without it he would have never saw the chip that the coach saw from day one

@@aaronrumph3291 But how would Dam get a title shot in the first place? He's never fought a professional fight. He could step in there as a replacement, but it would never be for the world championship.
Creed saw Dames true colors when he was throwing cheap shots and showing no care to the fighter who was seriously hurt.

@@aaronrumph3291 Of course. But there is a big difference between a bum pro boxer like Rocky getting a title shot and a guy who has never had a single pro fight and just got out of prison.
At that point Dame was basically Creed's friend and the champs sparing partner.
I'm not destroying the film for it. Simply something I thought didn't make sense.
