1950 Fender Super Amp: Naked and Thrashed but still SUPER !!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2021
- This video features the repair of a heavily used, but rare and wonderful 1950 Fender Super Amp.....favorite of Billy G. Although it had already been recapped, the tone was awful, the output transformer was flapping in the breeze, and the wiring looked like linguini after a hurricane ;) Through careful replacement of key capacitors, the tone was restored, the wiring replaced (as needed), and the OPT repaired. With the help of Ollie & Jack, we will audio test the final result, as well as open a splendid box o' tubes from Sweden, and share some valuable basic concepts. The icing on the cake, however, will be the final, very special video that has never been shared with viewers, featuring my late, beloved workshop partner and pal.

You’re doing the world a service, sir! Thank you. These videos are so important for the vintage amp enthusiast. Not only restoration, but documentation. Thank you!
You're quite welcome, Ryan. Thanks !!
That is an archeological find and a beautiful old amp. I have never seen one like that and my first thought when looking at the front was that a previous owner bolted a piece of body molding from a Pontiac Chieftain to the grille.
Very sorry YT would not send you a plaque for your major accomplishment. I suppose twerking channels with ads and 47 million subs have more value in the corporate world (please don't twerk!) than an excellently produced vintage amplifier channel, but you have 100,000+ loyal subscribers who would strongly disagree. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that every minute of every video on your channel is greatly appreciated.
@Slugg0matic Agreed whole-heartedly, S. To you, Uncle D and his beloved four-legged colleagues: All the best. R 🍻😎

Uncle Doug,
Seven years ago in the dead of winter i lost my wife in childbirth. We weren’t very young but we were newlyweds and she gave me a daughter to raise alone. That was a hard pill to swallow. I will leave the difficulty of enduring that to your imagination but suffice it to say that one scratches and claws at whatever they can to bring them comfort in those times. You did that for me. Somewhere in the fog of that i stumbled across a death capacitor video and was intrigued. Watching your videos was a great distraction and educational. I like everything about your videos… the ultra dry humor, the detail, the education in laymen’s terms that is nit condescending. I won’t go on much longer with my sob story but I thank you for putting the time and effort into sharing your knowledge and frankly a part of your reality with us. Everybody fights a battle and it’s nice to be able to enjoy someone else’s view of the world, even if it’s watching your cats sniff other people’s soup whiff blanketed packing jobs. Thanks for the hard work and i look forward to your next amp project.
Andy
Wow, Andy, I am deeply moved by your story and very glad indeed that our videos were helpful during your time of need. We're here for you. Thanks !!
My God Andy, I can't imagine what you must have gone through during those trying times.
I realize I'm years late but after reading your comment to Doug I realized my struggle, in effect, wasn't quite so bad.
I was in a car accident 2 years ago from which I'm still trying to recover. Haven't worked since essentially. Never the less, helped me realize others have a much harder road to hoe than myself.
Here Uncle Doug and his shop stewards have taught a couple Middle ages men some very important life lessons!!!

102k and climbing - I am sure some of us could design a plaque. But we ARE the plaque. Uncle Doug is our internet meeting place for these very specific interests and I could not be prouder to be a part of it.

Uncle Doug... First of all, I want to offer my condolences to you for the loss of your "part-time" ball fetching team mate, Rusty. For us who have been following you all this time, he will never be forgotten... especially with his "not in a hurry" way of entertaining. I started out using old tube radio sets in 1955 then "real" tube amps around 1958, eight years after this jewel was made. Although I haven't taken
alcohol or any other "enhancer" for going on twenty-five years, I now find myself addicted to these wondrously
wise, humorous and loving videos. Well I'll be darned as you might say but a great big thank-you and be sure I'll
keep on consuming!
Amp addiction is definitely preferable to most other addictions, NM......although it's been know to consume savings and cause marital strife :)
Hi Uncle Doug. I'm going through all of your previous videos, which I watched when you posted them. I'd like you to know, and this ain't BS, the huge impact you've had on my life. I had to start working on my own eqip. years ago, as I live in the boondocks of upstate NY where there were only a handful of radio and TV guys who didn't know much about guitar amps. The worst thing was, my amps are a 1966 F. Vibrolux Rev. and a 67 pro reverb.I didn't have a clue, but I had no choice. I had to dive into the fray if I wanted to use them. I did know enough to realize these were quality amps that I needed to keep. I tinkered a bit but was afraid I would mess them, or myself up. When I discovered your channel you inspired me to learn. Now I feel comfortable working on my own, as well as other people's amps. I charge very little if anything for doing it but in any case, you were the one who got me to this point through your unselfish love of sharing your knowledge. Thank you.
Wow.....Thanks for the wonderful comments, Tim. Nothing makes us happier than hearing that our videos have been helpful and inspirational.

Ever wonder why it’s so hard to find a 0.00001mF cap? Smaller values like that were just starting to be called picofarad (and nanofarad to replace sub 1mF or mmF)in the military/science and test equipment sector of the 50’s. For some reason, humans have a horrible time with decimal places and a succession of repeating numbers. I know I do.
So, for all of us that aren’t masters of tube equipment like Uncle Doug, it’s a 100pF cap.
I have an almost new set of ST envelope RCA 6L6G’s I would have donated to this cause. I think I’ll have to ship them your way.
Thanks for the helpful info, Matt. I prefer to verbalize the units on the cap or schematic.....just to avoid confusion, and I could definitely use a nice pair of 6L6's if they're burning a hole in your pocket ;)
Chasing decimal points around capacitors is a lot like playing wack-a-mole and makes my brain hurt.
I love these videos coming from a guy who loves old amps and old hot rods... Thanks.
That's me for sure, Rick. We're glad to hear it :)
Dear uncle Doug. This is such an amazing walk through, thank you so much. I’ve been fighting weird noises and thin sound coming out of my Super ever since it came back from the repair shop. Your hint about + to + on the speakers did the trick! They were wired wrong. Now it sounds E P I C. Thank you for going into the little details. They matter. Best regards
I'm glad the video was helpful, E. Polarity really matters when there are two or more speakers.
Did you end up removing those extra resistors by the volume pots you mentioned at 14:17?
I was wondering the same.
@@smasica me three
I failed to mention that I did jumper them and noticed no change in tone or volume......which makes you wonder why they were there. I left them....they appeared to be original.
@@UncleDoug poss to stop runaway with no resistance in the circuit

Uncle Doug, just want to say thanks for helping me to understand finally how these ancient devices work. I'm sure, in another 70 years, this amp will sound as good as it does now-IF we have any tubes left.
In the last couple of months I have done another apprenticeship with your vids, and I will have to go back--too much to take in in one go.
I have been playing for 40 years (56), and never really understood why some things just sound better, and now I think I do. Electricity is scary, so I chose to work with 9v insteadof 240v, and tried to get my Marshall fix with a Noisy cricket into a 4X12, and thanks to you, I now am starting to understand how it works.
These circuits were all made perfect back then, and you are making sure they still work.
Bravo.
You're welcome, Andy. It's great to hear that the videos are helpful and informative.

71 years. Wow. Amazing post delivery of tubes, that was cool. The brown sparkle cloth goes just fine with a 71 year old Fender. And the condition of the cabinet, minus tweed of course, just looks solid, looks great.
Thanks so much, Guillermo.
Great to see you're back. Great video. Three months ago, I woke up one day with severe sudden hearing loss in my right ear (minus 60 dB!). Big panic! Cortisone infiltrations through the ear drum did not bring my hearing back. Sadly, I have to live with unilateral hearing loss for the rest of my life. Restoring and repairing amps will be a bit more difficult now, but I guess my trusty scope will help me out.
Thanks. That's really unfortunate, Berre. Best wishes for a miraculous recovery.
Most (or all) of folk on this channel have an interest in sound production or similar. I assume you are amongst them, so the hearing in one ear will be sorely missed. Best wishes, I trust you will work around it.

What a basket case. Those fragrant animal fluid stains would have been a deal breaker for me. Either the amplifier would have to be very cheap or somebody would have to give it to me as a gift. But the new front grill cloth made a world of difference.

Thanks Uncle Doug.
The earlier tests were done with the camera microphone, which picks up all the ambient noise in the workshop.
Never would have thought the answers to "who put this transformer here?" and "what's with this wood work?" would have been Fender. Great video Uncle Doug!
I was surprised too, PP. These early amps are sometimes quite different from what we think of as coming from Fender.
