I've commented on a couple of the comments below, but figured I'd put my $.02 here as well.
I love the Seiko 5 automatics. I had a blue one just like this for several years and I loved it. I have small wrists and the smaller face was perfect for me. I slowly added to my collection until I became comfortable with 43mm faces and suddenly this one looked really small, so I gave it to my son who wore it for two or three years. He knew I was a watch guy and felt really cool to be wearing an automatic that you could see the movement through the back. He was also learning how to read a clock and the way the numbers are on this dial were really helpful for that. The watch was the perfect size, but it did require a different band to fit him. Once his wrists were a little larger I gave him a small faced Seiko Kinetic that I could size the bracelet down for him and I took the movement out of this watch and put it in another project. The movement never had any accuracy problems through all the years I wore it or the years he wore it. The only negative thing I can say about this watch is that you can't wind it manually with the stem, but that isn't really a problem. Wear it all the time and it never unwinds anyway.
I'm not saying this is better or worse than the Citizen. Honestly the only reason I can see why these two watches are being compared in this video is because their dials are the same size and they both have canvas straps. The numbers are totally different, hands are different, lume is different... They aren't the same watch at all. That being said, I love Citizen watches. I own several and I love them. The only Seiko automatics I have right now are Kinetic movements, so basically somewhere between the eco-drive and an automatic. I love the feel of the rotor, but also love the accuracy of a quartz, so that's what I choose to have. Nothing against Seiko automatic movements at all. I've just graduated up a little. My automatics in the collection at this point are much nicer than what I started out with, but that Seiko 5 was a great starting point. I'm buying my youngest son a new one for his first watch this Christmas and I hope they will also always remember what their first watch was before they inherited some nicer watches.
Forget what you've heard about the accuracy. This movement is very solid. You won't find a smoother sweeping second hand in an automatic movement either. I'm blown away by how smooth it is. It's smoother than my Omega and I thought that one would blow Seiko away, but nope. Forget what you hear about water resistence too. 3 bar water resistence is plenty good for swimming and showering. The Seiko is essentially a field watch. It isn't a water sports watch. If you fall off your horse into the river while crossing, then this watch is going to be fine. Just think about the things you might encounter if you were camping and those are the kinds of things this watch does well with. I've been snorkeling with this watch and it is fine. I've swam with it and I've showered with it. It is fine. I would recommend maybe you don't do those things intentionally with this watch since canvas straps will get pretty stinky if you get them wet. So basically you just need to take care of it and think and you are fine.
Bottom line, the Seiko 5 automatic is the best entry level automatic you can buy. Forget what you've heard about maintenance. You don't service inexpensive watches. This movement was built by a machine in a clean environment and is going to run trouble free for as long as you wear it. It isn't a Rolex that is going to get handed down for 10 generations or anything like that, but it is a solid enough movement that you could give it to your son and they would enjoy it until they upgraded. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you aren't thinking that every watch should be a 600m dive watch. Consider what it costs and then weigh that against what it does and I think you'll find it is a fine deal. So is the Citizen. I say buy them both and then buy 10 others and keep collecting, trading, buying and selling till your collection gets to the point that you have a watch for every occasion. There is no such thing as 'best for everything'. There is only 'best for something in my opinion'.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just think that reviewed by itself you will find the Seiko is a totally fine watch. Start comparing it to things and you'll always find one that does more or dives deeper or has a better strap. It isn't hard to find one that is better than the one you find better than that. It goes on for pretty much forever. There is always something better out there, so don't compare them. Just consider what you are going to use it for and then choose your power source and go from there. All the choices you have is what makes watch collecting so much fun!

Id have said the Seiko all day when the Citizen was over $100. I think I got mine back in 2014 for $120. It's a fine watch at that price but now that they are around $90 and the 5 seems to be a bit more expensive these days, the difference is less than $40 and the Citizen is simply a better deal. It is far more accurate. It is simply not possible that the automatic could be anywhere near as accurate. Mine loses around 10 seconds a day vs less than 10 seconds a month for the eco drive.

I love Seiko watches, I currently have one I bought in 2000 just as I was getting out of the jewelry business, its a quartz movement and very accurate, I'm a real stickler for my watch to have the correct time and quartz watches will do that. Over my 70 years I have owned many watches, most were self winding mechanical movements like the Automatic on this Seiko and I was just thrilled when quartz watches came out because they didn't have to constantly be reset to the correct time. Automatic watches, no battery but aren't accurate time keepers, quartz watches, accurate time keepers but need a battery from time to time, I'll take the quartz every time. I am extremely familiar with both brands from my time in the jewelry business, I own both and like both brands, hard to go wrong with either one.

I would point out that the Seiko is not rated for swimming at 30 meter WR, whereas the Citizen is at 100 meter WR. This is a big difference between these watches.

Larry Miller That's the only reason i'm going to get Citizen. I did a lot of research and really liked the Seiko 5 with its automatic movement and stuff BUT water resistance was something important for me so i decided to go with Citizen. Still , Seiko 5 SNK 809 is a great watch and it's a gateway drug for people new to watches.

Callsign Starbuck Seiko actually builds and test their watches for more than they rate them for. An SNK is fine for swimming.Yeah occasionally one may not be as good in the water, but for the most part they are. I swim and shower in mine with no problems. Just check the seals a once in awhile. I also wash my car and do other things like that with my SNK's. The are smaller and don't bang the surfaces is why I choose it to work in over my divers, plus the low price. If I do happen to damage it, I have a backup waiting to go to use. He'll, I have a backup for each one of my SNK's. If I have to resort to a backup, then I buy another backup for it. Any way, I just digressed. The SNK will handle swimming fine.

I don't have either of these but I do have a Citizen EcoDrive and a Seiko Automatic. I love both. The Citizen gets high marks for attention to detail and accuracy while the Seiko gets high marks for emotional attachment to automatic. It gains about 7 secs a day so once a week I adjust it. Also I love the smooth sweep of the second hand on the Seiko. I'm sure both these watches are great entry level high quality watches. Get both of you can. Great review.

Well, I did have a Citizen Eco-Drive going out on me after about 5 years. It's still working -- however, it did lose out on power reserve. No matter how long I attempted charging it up, it didn't last longer than about 5 or 6 hours. Got tired of continous charging of course, and finally gave it away to a friend yesterday. Got myself a much cheaper Casio Tough Solar instead, delivered today. Long story short: YMMV.

Great Video. You sold me on the Citizen. Mine has not gained or lost any time in 2 months. Spot on to my Atomic watch, NIST and watch check app. To me there was no contest...
    1. Solar, leave on the window sill, ready to go with no winding or stopping.
    2. Accurate as my Atomic G-Shock 5610!
    3. 100m water resistance vs. 30m...
    4. Easier to read dial and day/date.
    5. Never have to crack it open to "adjust" or change battery.

I’ve had the seiko for about 3 years. I use it for work and it became my “beater” watch. I have the green one, and the funny thing is, it looks better with some patina on it. I will buy the citizen eventually though. It’s a field watch, but has a bit of a pilot watch vibe to it, and that’s what I’m looking for.

Hey @TechnologyMafia, I'm just wondering if the Seiko snk809 is capable of being dunked into water such as swimming or showering? I read that some people were able to swim and do underwater stuff with it while others say that even washing their hands caused condensation within the crystal. Thanks!

The Seiko is probably my favorite watch. I've a few ancestral examples of hand wound watches, and have had the watch in the video for a while now. I can definitely say that Quartz does not have the warmth and emotional attachment of a Mechanical timepiece. This watch is not quite Atomic but that's exactly what makes it cool to me, and besides you can always tune your watch if you want paranoid about accuracy.

I have the Seiko 5, and it's been great for around ten years. Lately it's been getting slower, and occasionally stops. I tried to find a jeweler that would clean lube and adjust it, but they all quoted $300 to $400. In other words, they don't want to do it. I have come to the conclusion that it's a disposable auto wind watch, as I can get another for about $60. Having said that, I'm looking closely at the Citizen Eco Drive now. Thumb up for your review. Oh, Speidel Twist o Flex bands work quite well on these.

When it is fully uncharged, how can you fully charge it again? How many hours (days?) do you have to leave it exposed to sunlight to have the 6 months power reserve back? A guy told me he left this watch for three days under his light fixture. How about real sun light?

I find the Seiko to be a more visually fascinating watch. The dial has so much more going on in the way they designed the hands and the layout of the numerals. I kind of like the fact that I have to "feed" it every day with a few shakes, to keep it happy and ticking.

The Seiko snk809 is often referred to as a "baby flieger" watch. The flieger watch was created for german pilots in ww2. It is a very simple and uncluttered design with an emphasis on the minutes dial over the hours, because minutes are more important to a pilot. The original flieger watches were gargantuan. They were worn on top of the flight jacket cuff.

The Seiko can easily be regulated to plus 2 seconds a day, set it overnight crown up and it loses 2 for a net zero. Most people change the strap, right away so that is not an issue other than the cost/trouble

I have regulated my snk 809 to 8 seconds a month but requires a study for a month to do it.Bedtime positioning is key but now I have developed a routine to not even worry about it for one month checks. To hack the 809 is you simply run time backwards very slightly and the second hand will stop for a half second.I love Automatics and plane to service it myself as I’m slowly gathering tools and equipment to do it.

How do you keep your watches in focus? When I shoot on my a6700 or zv-e10, I’m always losing focus. Should I be shooting at a higher aperture? I usually shoot in f 2.8 since the store I shoot at doesn’t have the best lighting.

I travel and fly a lot. I have all sorts of watches but my go to watch is a Citizen. I wanted a watch that I didn't have to spend $500 to $1,000 every 3 to 5 years to maintain, didn't want to replace batteries and contribute to the green movement, and wanted the watch to set itself to the correct time no matter where I was on this planet aside that it is very very accurate at a great value.

I've owned both of these for 14 years. The Citizen is hands down the better watch overall. The Seiko is now so way out of timekeeping to be useless without a service. The Citizen still keeps 1 sec per week. Saying that the Seiko has been a nice watch to wear and fiddle with. If you're forced to choose between the two for money reasons. the Citizen wins. 👍

I have the Seiko 5 shown in the video, had it for a little more than a year and it is so unreliable that I am looking for something different. I have always heard that Seiko has been known for high quality and reliable watches but that has not been my experience. As an example, for the last several days it has been within a minute of accurate. It was always about 3-4 minutes a week fast from day 1. Then this morning, it was 3 3/2 hours ahead. So for some reason while I was sleeping it went crazy fast, so fast that it gained 3 3/2 hours in under 7 hours time. I have found that at random times it will either lose or gain huge amounts of time, like hours of time. I just can't trust this watch for being even minimally accurate. It really bums me out too because it was a gift that I hoped I would have for the next decade or more but it is just terrible for time keeping. Having it fixed is more than the watch is worth so like most everything else, this Seiko 5 is just another disposable poor quality watch. Looking at the Citizen now. I really want an automatic watch but honestly, I just don't trust them after this one.

@David Morris my sympathies completely. I've bought two autos in the last year both nh35 and they are going the same way. My collection now is about 90% quartz. My Seiko quartz items have all been reliable. Interestingly I've gotten hold of a few SII VH watches which are quartz but tick like an auto and are not expensive. I'd recommend if you still have an auto "itch". Regards. 👍

Excellent video - I totally agree with the Seiko 809 being the "emotional decision". I've owned one for 3 years due to being on sale on Amazon and put up with its inaccuracy b/c its automatic. I'm always resetting it cause I wear a dress watch at work but even when I wear it more it seems to go too fast. I got used to not trusting the watch I was wearing. After watching your video, I just recieved the this BM ecodrive today and set the time to my phone and so far it is not losing or gaining time. As a side note, Amazon primes prices are really dynamic to the hour on this watch and I saw it fluctate from $87 to $81. Amazon refunded the difference when it was $84 after I emailed them. I might give the Seiko to my kid, but I'll have to keep track of its accuracy if I do. I have the Malaysian SNG, I wonder if a true Japanese one would've performed better.

They both have a fan base. I’m a bit of a traditionalist so I have a Seiko. It’s an automatic... it has gears... it winds up. It’s not perfect. But, it’s a traditional time piece. The citizen is beautiful... but it’s solar powered( amazing ) but it might as well be quartz. I do have a G-Shock. I use it for work. Seiko has an excellent price for an automatic movement.

I like both watches you have shown. Not personally seen this particular Seiko watch till viewing this video. I own the model of Citizen watch you have just shown and have had it for about 7 years now. Have to agree with you on the comments about this particular model. I paid around £60 in the UK for it. It was my first purchase of a Citizen watch and was very impressed with it. The strap lasted around three years before I had to replace it after the inner part of the strap started to split, the outside of the strap was ok. The accuracy of the Citizen is incredible and I wear it often. I enjoy owning both Seiko and Citizen watches but overall price for price and build quality I have found Citizen better in a lot of ways.

The Citizen has a Quartz movement, is powered by Light, and is Water Resistant down to 100m (328ft). Therefore, it is far more Durable, Dependable, and Accurate. Plus, Citizen's Quality Control is simply superior to Seiko's Q.C.
Also, at this price range, you're getting a very cheap Automatic movement in the Seiko to fit the $110 price and therefore you're losing value in other areas of the watch.
So Citizen wins this comparison with ease and it's even $6 cheaper than the Seiko.
But if you truly want an Automatic watch in this price range, go with Orient. Otherwise, go with this Citizen watch, it gives you the greatest bang for your buck I've seen.

They’re both great watches why not have both a great pair to add a collection. I have 3 Seiko 5’s on different bands. They are accurate you just have to wear it and move it a little. Very different watches even though they look alike. I will never own one that has a battery that needs constant replacement both a good choice.

Kinetic & solar watches use batteries. Eventually they will wear out and need to be replaced.
Collectable watches are always automatics. My 809 totally disagrees with your daft assessment reference timing: three weeks of wearing mine and the time is spot on, at least the minute hand points accurately at the correct numeral: it's a great timekeeper and is better than my Omega in that respect.
If I really was concerned at whether a watch was accurate to the second, then I would use a quartz watch, which the Citizen is

I was struggling with whether to give the SEIKO as a graduation gift for a guy with smaller wrists. I wanted an automatic movement for the heirloom quality of it, but the only automatic watch with a case under 40mm at an entry-level price is the SEIKO 5 SNK 809. While a very nice watch, it doesn't seem to keep great time according to a lot of users, the band is crap, and it's only WR to 30M, which means it's not recommended for showering or swimming -- a big inconvenience, IMO. I was so focused on trying to find a suitable automatic watch, and trying to justify getting the SEIKO, that until I saw your comparison, I completely overlooked Citizen Eco-Drive (even though my everyday watch for the past four years has been a faultless Eco-Drive Chronograph). I went with the watch you featured, but with a black dial and black leather strap -- Model AW0040-01E. A few more dollars than the SEIKO (okay, 42 more dollars), but worth it, IMO. Anyway, thanks for your help.

    • @ocdetails
      @ocdetails 8 років тому +1

I disagree that it doesn't keep great time. It definitely does keep that. Mine never lost or gained a second the whole nine or ten years that I had it. It is a solid movement. Not exactly an heirloom piece, though. Who passes down a $60 watch? And I wouldn't dis on the band at all. It is exactly what it is supposed to be. Canvas straps aren't supposed to be fancy, so I'm not sure how this one could be a disappointment.
30 meters is plenty of water resistance for swimming. Unless you are diving into a 100 foot deep pool, of course. 30m is plenty fine for just about anything short of diving. Let's be real... If you are diving and need to wear a watch, then you are going to be looking for a watch with very specific features on it that this one doesn't have anyway. I've snorkeled with this watch and it works just fine.
Every watch is made for something different. This one is a field watch and not meant for water sports or diving, so if that is what will be done with it, then it isn't the right watch. It is a great entry level automatic with better quality than the chinese ebay automatics which keep terrible time with cheap movements and have straps that fall apart in 2 months. This is a great automatic watch to present to someone younger with smaller wrists, or even adults with small wrists (I'm 40 and still have 8 inch wrists) and likes the smaller dials. There really isn't any reason someone wouldn't be thrilled to receive this watch as a gift. They can always wear a different one if they are diving.
