    If the Vietnam war taught us anything it’s that forcing civilians to fight a war they don’t want to fight against an army determined to win at all costs is just futile.

      The parallels between this and Vietnam are striking. Except the US had air superiority, the Vietnamese got less foreign support, Vietnam had a smaller population, and the US had a larger population than Russia now has...
      So basically the same, but worse for Russia in every way.

      @@aaronbaker2186 the soviets sent 95 Sam missiles, 500 planes,120 helicopters,5000 anti air guns, 2000 tanks. They had over 3000 soviets soldiers training them on the weapons they sent. Plenty of foreign aid. More than Ukraine is getting actually.

    In Russian if you protest against the war it’s a prison sentence, if you call it a “War” on social media or in public it’s a prison sentence, if you resist the conscription it’s a prison sentence, if you disobey an order to fight in Ukraine it’s prison sentence, if you surrender to Ukrainian forces when you are returned to Russia it’s a prison sentence; that’s why they are leaving.

      The writing is on the wall: Once the iron curtain closes, all of Russia will be a prison. This will greatly simplify the logistics of incarceration. At least one logistical problem Russia knows how to deal with…

      Ukraine have text men they will house them in prisons for the duration of the war if they surrender and not telling how they surrendered at least Ukrainian prisons are safer than Russian. If they fight or kill Ukrainian civilians they have promised they will face a war crimes trial.

      @First Last Putin ask russians to fight, they protest or leave. Zelensky ask ukrainians to fight, they even come from abroad to do so. It's the will of the people what matters.
      Zelensky is only the face of the ukranian people, he does not command them. That's the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

      well you can actually blame them ... they had 7 month to protest against war and do something against the regime. They won't arrest millions of people. Now they are protesting against mobilization and not against war. Also, Moscow has 14 million people ... 10% of them are enough to go into the streets but no ... it seems that Iranian women are waaaay braver that the russian males :)

Nobody will do it for them Poles or Baltics did fight for freedom and democracy over centuries and Russians can't? Are they a special need baby?       It is survival of the strongest, if the recruit shoots his officers and absconds, he will be the strongest. If not, he will probably die in the cold and wet fighting for someone who is stronger and sitting behind a desk in a warm office.

    If Russia stops fighting, there will be peace. If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no more Ukraine. Give Ukraine all the weapons they ask for as long as they have the will to fight. The Ukrainian army has proven it is capable of beating Russia if they have the right equipment.

      Those 45 million, how old are they? There are only 7 million Russian men aged 18-28, so to get 45 you have to include what, 70 year olds? Granted, Putin is calling up 65 year olds to send as cannon fodder.
      This is going to be a military, political, economic, and demographic disaster for Russia. I hope Ukraine attacks when the first of these guys arrive, they will be an obvious weak point in the line, and once they break the other soldiers in their units will also break.

      Even if Russia defeats the Ukrainian military, which involves reaching the Polish border and occupying all of Ukraine, they then have to deal with a hostile population. It will be the USSR occupation of Afghanistan except that Russia has half the population of the USSR and Ukraine has 3 times the population of Afghanistan. The Rosgvardia are already taking losses from people in the Donbas and Crimea who hate Russia, much less Kherson.
      Ukraine will be a bleeding sore for Russia until Russia leaves. The only question is how many Russians die and how much damage Russia suffers for this unwinnable war.

    Note that they're not protesting against Putin's senseless war or his government. They're protesting being sent into the meat grinder themselves. Many of those who are leaving have undoubtedly voted for Putin or the recent changes in the constitution which made him dictator for life. Russians should be made to face the grim reality of being ruled by Putin and his gang of criminals. As far as I understand, many countries have already closed their borders, and this policy should continue.

Anything related to Ukraine as anything but a subservient part of Russia is being erased.

      There are 7 million men aged 18-28 in all of Russia.
      I have said elsewhere that between Rosgvardia, the existing military, and the new draft as many as 1/3rd of young Russian men may be in uniform soon.

      Russia has a mandatory military service rule if you don't go to higher education academies so pretty much everyone is considered a soldier, which means yes they are conscripts. This aren't actual reservists as you'd see in Europe, they are people forcefully made into reservists
