  • Hirosaki Castle is a historic Japanese castle located in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. It was built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, a powerful feudal domain during the Edo period.
    Key Features
    • The castle is a hirayama-style castle, built on a flat plain rather than a hilltop or mountain.
    • It originally had a five-story tenshu (main keep) which was destroyed by lightning in 1627. The current three-story tenshu was rebuilt in 1810.
    • The castle grounds are divided into six concentric baileys (enclosures) that were formerly walled and separated by moats.
    • Several original structures remain, including the tenshu, three yagura (turrets), five gates, and portions of the stone walls and moats. These are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
    • The castle is surrounded by Hirosaki Park, famous for its over 2,600 cherry blossom trees that bloom in late April/early May, attracting many visitors.
