DUDE! That "beat it with a cinder block" texturizing technique is the best thing I've seen all week. What an effective and efficient technique!
So easy and quick and looks great!
Just started DMing for some friends. Was looking at buying a lot of plastic terrain or a 3D printer. Till i found your channel. I like that I can craft what ever I want how I want it for my campaigns. Keep up the great work. Thanks Scotty!
Very welcome...and you can craft it cheaper and faster.
You're very excited in this one.
+Bob bill Very true...lol
Between this video and the one for the quest givers campaign I could say Scotty is Superman.
Thanks much but I am craftman =)
The crafting was awesome, as usual. And the ending was just pure cute. Made me smile :)
So glad you enjoyed it.
Really cool rock face terrain DM Scotty! And what a cute little Mini DM you have there! Craft-on!
Thanks and have fun crafting
Own, what the cute niece you have hahaha
Love the video!
Thank you!
Glad you lie the vid...She really love hanging out with uncle Scotty
It is impossible to watch your videos and dont like it. You are certainly one of the bests!
Those cliffs look amazing
+Ado Pipíška Thanks, and really easy to make too.
+theDMsCraft Honestly best ones I have ever seen.
Thanks for the compliment.
Great video, again, DM Scotty. Just a suggestion - an alternative to leaving the edges sharp, you could use the cinder block or the hot knife to round them off a bit. This would give more realism for some rock faces, especially if you were going to flock to the top, rather than having bare stone. I may make some both ways.
+M Cornwall True.
I gotta get my friends and others to sub ,EVERY video is rich with great creative ideas. I haven't seen many easy to follow and cheap materials that look so great!
Thanks, appreciated.
Never thought to put the non-grey colors on before sponging on the gray. I'll have to remember that.
Yep...try it.
Wow! I love your terrain ideas; they're cheap, easy, and top notch quality. So many of the other methods tossed around on the internet look fantastic, but they take such a long time. Keep it up!
+Jonathan Brouwer I agree, thanks and have fun crafting.
the cinder block sound effects crack me up! :)
Heh heh
Yeah I got a howtobasic feel by that xD
I have been playing D&D and warhammer for nearly 30 years now, and I still love seeing new ideas. I have used foam for ages and in truth the cutoff bits can be kept for small rocks and blocks and all sorts of things. I keep a bits box for just such things.
True but if you make a lot it can quickly get out of control.
TheDMsCraft
That is true.
holy crap... that pink and that one coat of black is already great for most fantasy rpg/dnd games! :O
you should do one about making slate or shale surfaces, I know it would probably just be different ways of cutting it, but I think it would be cool to see that
True, good idea.
thank you
You are the bob ross of sculpting DM s. Subcribed.
Thanks, glad you like my work.
TheDMsCraft A pleasure. I just found you yesterday and I never knew it could be so simple. I run a game for my son, nieces and their friends. Now I can get them to help create the world. Shine on you crazy diamond.
Perfect have fun crafting and gaming.
I finally see a use for the baby shower baskets form the dollar store...Thanks...great tip one of the best...
+Robert Ruby cool, you caught that in the pic.
This looks like a great technique to work on both my crafting addiction and anger management.
+Drawrof Perfect =)
Getting two birds stoned…
I got immense satisfaction just WATCHING as you highlighted with grey!
All.....that....texture!!!
oh yeah paint it
Foam makes great rocks. You can also get trees as well.
Phenom! Looks like actual naturally weathered rock. I did a similar project but when you did the concrete plus the spraypaint techniques, 2 techniques I have used individually, but not on the same project, you incorperated into one project . genius!
Thanks, I love the look.
Woah...REALLY nice finish :O
Thanks much...and easy.
I really like that texture you got there.
Thanks, very happy with it.
DM Scotty, I got into creating modules about a year ago and I always find myself coming back to your channel. You are absolutely amazing!
So glad to hear it and thanks for the compliment.
You were really pumped about your new technique and it was worth it! Those cliff faces are outstanding and the texture is fantastic. Now I'm gonna have to go find some broken cinder blocks somewhere! Excellent job, man, and I really dig that cave idea using the cliffs. Sooooo many ideas spring to mind! :D
+13thBear Glad I could fill your head with ideas...Go forth and craft.
That's awesome. You could use the leftovers to line tunnels or the underside of bridges.
So true.
the paint also looks like old tree bark, amazing
Alot of terrain crafter's actually use cork bark for cliff faces when making wargaming terrain.
darnit Scotty! why couldn't i have seen this a week ago before spent all those hours making my cave set for this week's game! haha... Seriously, bravo. Looks great!
+David Herscher I get that a lot...lol
The TerrainTutor channel showed how you can make really cool rockfaces with cork bark.
+Alderick van Klaveren Yep, this in just one of many ways...always nice to have options.
You guys are just incredibly useful resources. I am a game designer; the guy who writes encounters for programmers to code and graphic artists to art, but I recently got hired as a graphic designer.
Thanks to you guys, I know how to make affordable, commercial textures and scale models of the things I'm depicting in Photoshop.
Your videos have been a huge boon to me, completely unexpectedly and I wanted to thank you for that. :)
Very welcome...have fun.
Scotty man, your videos are always fun to watch.
+Paul Kensler Glad you enjoy them.
Been watching some of your videos now. I just discovered them recently. You have realy high quality content going on. This rock tutorial must be one of the best I have seen so far. Really great job, Scotty! Thanks for sharing :)
Glad you like my work.
DM, your techniques are impressive. I'm learning here now to practice tomorrow. Ever a nice job.
+Kleber Brito have fun, glad you found it helpful.
Those look fantastic.
Thanks, i really like them.
A while back, a guy named Grant Thompson put up an instructional video on his channel on how to make a hot wire foam factory for less than you would pay in stores. Those with some electrical knowledge might be interested.
ua-cam.com/video/N2n_EbRzZ0g/v-deo.html Here's one that's very nice can use as a table to cut angles or remove and use free hand even use hooked to a 6 volt battery if an outlet isn't handy.
Nice stuff, Scotty. I look forward to adding this to the crafting queue.
+Bill Allan Awesome!
That is a really cool idea! I never thought of making rock faces that way but I can see how well it works. Thanks for sharing this.
So glad you like it...it really looks great with the micro-cracks.
Black magic craft making rocks: Lawful good
TheDMsCraft making rocks: Chaotic good
heh heh, hit the rock on the head.
That sound effect...Scotty, that made my day XD. By the way, I think it's important to distinguish that the pink stuff is condensed Polystyrene, not Styrofoam. Styrofoam is air expanded and is not dense at all, while insulating polystyrene is extremely dense. Made from the same base materials, just in different ways. Personally I prefer the pink or blue stuff when I can find it since it's easier to manage than regular Styrofoam (and no annoying beads all over the shop!)
+VikingFyre Yeah, it was so funny I had to keep it...lol
+theDMsCraft On the note of a foam craft, been trying to craft stone and chitin spires for my tyranid invasion themed D&D game. Any advice for making the crescent moon shape out of foam???
VikingFyre Just cut it into the general shape and then sand it...will be a bit messy
+theDMsCraft Better find the dust buster then -_- thanks Scotty!
Hear dat
Sound effects are funny as all heck, LOL
Keep your cut off pcs they come in handy for other projects as well
True...lol
Man, that initial painted reveal, just wow.
This is a great how to buddy, I really need myself a hot wire cutter now! :D
I love mine.
Wow Scotty! Great job, I'm impressed.
+Crafters Central Glad you like =)
WOW. Looking really-real. Love it!
+Earl Tea Grey TV Thanks man
Great video as always and a great new technique for making rock faces or cliffs.
+jjab99 I loved the result.
Great stuff with the hot wire tool. That's all I use mainly when I work with polystyrene. I am surprised the spray paint didn't melt the foam more.
This foam is very dense compared to say foam used for packing in products, that type will eat more away.
I think the spray paints are also less destructive then the ones from a few years back with all the eco friendly stuff going on
Yay!
Yet another great video!
very nice work indeed
Glad you like it
Looks great!
Awesome rock faces, great cave entrance, and your niece is a cutie.
+Sailor Barsoom 3 stars for me...thanks =)
I forsee this working perfectly inside the Cragmaw Hideout
+John Suski So true =)
I knew it was only a matter of time. 😉
+Shawny Finn Heh heh, just an anomaly...move on...lol
+theDMsCraft
"Foam is bettah!" - Billy Madison 😂
What an extremely creative mind you have. Thanks for the vid!
So very welcome.
Nice job man!
How amazing you always got the best ideas.
I have a challenge for you.
How would you make a D'Jinn?
Check out this vid...might give you some ideas: ua-cam.com/video/GoL79HjiZvA/v-deo.html
Epic! Yet again you blew my mind!!!
to fill foam holes best use pvc + primer mix
Another great video
Thanks
@@theDMsCraft your video gave me the inspiration to overcome a building problem I was having with my very first diorama. I am going to be trying your purple worm craft as well because I show that video to everyone.
@@snarkback Fantastic, so glad my work inspires you!
You should add some grass tufts or maybe mushrooms as details
I wanted to keep it generic as possible for all possible situations...Always easier to add separate details to a piece than be stuck with a piece that only fits one situation.
Wow, the speed that you're working with is amazing. I bet it took years to move your hands like that.
Yep, trained in Tibet.
Nice.
What no snow down your way? :p
The scraps you had left over would be cool to cut down a bit more and use as ledges. mine openings, or cave holes.
+Joseph Keenan So true.
great video :).
those are nice rocks, have you used more washes in shading the rocks?
+john tailby You could not use grey if you want your rocks to be more like sandstone.
Love it
Thanks much.
Ok that’s damn nice right there.
Thanks, works great in my game.
I used a chunk of asphalt to texture with.
perfect...great stress reliever =)
truly amazing!
+ZCD99 Thanks, I was vey happy with the result.
That looks awesome!!!
4:57 Some of those cutoffs I would have saved for dead ends or large caverns simply because it would save me from making them out of the other pieces. Just a thought!
always good to use scraps =)
Thanks for these, Scotty. Youre awesome. Sort of an overall question, why paint everything black if you want it to be mostly gray? Why not paint it with a flat gray or gray primer from the outset?
The black base gives a nice shading effect...All grey tends to look flat.
Phenomenonal pieces. Love watching your videos. Btw...What's the Styrofoam cutter called you use
Hot wire foam factory
Dude!! 😲 amazing! *subbed*
nicee
Beautiful, simple , and quick. Thank Jesus!!! I was about to give on founding a less time-consuming way to create terrain for my Christmas village.
So glad you found the vid...have fun!
Hey DM Scotty! Awesome awesome stuff my man! How did you do the archway over the cave entrance at the end? It looks like perhaps some expanding foam?
What type of Styrofoam is that? The stuff I'm using is essentially a bunch of small white balls compressed into a block, which doesn't give the same texture.
It is Foam Board Insulation which is usually pink or blue and stronger than the regular styrofoam.
Hey DM Scotty, could you tell me where you found the pink foam and the wire foam cutter? Thank you!
+Dylan Williams Sure will, you can get the pink or blue foam at Loews, Home Depot or any big box store....the foam cutters are from Hot Wire Foam Factory....happy crafting.
Heres a link where you can easily make a very nice cutter ua-cam.com/video/N2n_EbRzZ0g/v-deo.html
Also do a search on youtube of styrene cutters and youll find a bunch you can make easily ones a tiny one you make using a 9 volt battery.
So, did you do two black bomb base coats? First the flat black spray, and then acrylic brushed on?
I sprayed some flat black on to melt the foam in places because it helps the rough rock look. The spray coat won't cover the foam well as it tends to melt the foam and let the color of the original foam poke through so I hand painted the pieces black acrylic craft paint before putting the rock colors on. Hope this helps and have fun.
@@theDMsCraft Ah, ok. That makes sense. Thank you, sir, for clearing my confusion. 😊
Pax ✌️
what was the spray paint you used to paint the Styrofoam first the black color at the beginning?
Do you ever use Mog podge or minwax to protect your foam stuff?
Nope but if I thought they would get a lot of wear I might.
Is it just me or in the small pic for this episode did this look like a really forlorn and forgotten paddle wheel boat? Maybe it's because I just watched his Viking and Elven boat tutorials. That's cool we have a lil grandaughter named Gracey too. Craft on little one.
Did you mix modpodge with the black base
I did not as this foam is pretty sturdy but that is an option to make them stand up to wear. Honestly all the years I have had them it hasn't been a problem.
How do you go about deciding about how many of what size pieces you'll need? I'm currently making some pieces for a crag top wyvern nest for my group, but I want to keep the stuff modular and easy to use for futur games
Modularity is the key. I was pretty random with the sizes as I wanted larger platforms to smaller ones. Even the smaller ones can be bunched together to make larger ones so no real pressure on the sizes.
Scotty could I do this with dollar store foam?
+Hal Patterson you could try.
I;m guessing I would have to be easy with it
Try and find where they might be doing new construction they usually have scraps that are perfect size for this sort of crafting they just throw away.
drunken & dragons would be proud of your work :)
smash your foam well ;)
Heh heh =)
stress relief and terrain at the same time...lol
how are you getting pieces of styrofoam so thick? Everytime I go to Michaels they are barely half that thick!
I use the pink styrofoam they but on the outside of houses...you can get it at big box hardware stores.
Look for where new construction is being done they often have scrap they will give you free
I think you forgot to mention how much of a mess styrofoam can be, lol
+SHAWN Guymon Oh, thanks for reminding me...lol
+theDMsCraft Yeah, but did this make a mess?
+Joshua Watson Very minimal, I show how much waste I had in the vid.
;) I joke. I kid.
What hot wire cutter do you recommend?
Will the foam warp overtime without a base?
Not at all, have had them for years.
Would you recommend the Styrofoam insulation as a possible alternative to the dollar store foam core? Do you see it working the same way? I'm having a tough time finding a foam core I can peel easily.
+crusaderad That could work.
i'm really hoping you didn't just throw away those left overs and did facades with them, cause they are very very great looking facades for background elements.
+DnD Basement hehe, your reply was just off screen when I said the same thing. :)
👍🏆
Why is it always based in black? Everything is always based in black on every channel. Monet hardly ever used black since it rarely occurs naturally.
Does it just not work to base in dark shades?
I find it kind of pre-shades the work and makes it graphically pop but the great thing about the craft is that you can paint it any way you want...This is just what I like to do.
Cool. I basically have no idea what I'm doing here. I mean, I've got high school art, a bit of engineering, and some drafting under my belt. Outside that I'm flying blind.
Your videos are A HUGE help, by the way.
Remember when the builds were actually useful?
+lastdollarfilms Ouch.
+lastdollarfilms Sorry to hear you feel that way because I consider them incredibly useful and so do many others.
+lastdollarfilms Considering you have produced nothing of value on UA-cam I will consider your statement null and void.
+theDMsCraft first thanks for looking a my channel such that it is. Second I like how you go from being respectful to commenting on my lack of videos in an insulting way. Since you want to talk about my channel lets talk about the quality of the latest videos. When I first started watching your videos they were helpful and useful. Then you abandoned that for the next series and it too was useful. Lately though you have done nothing but go back to 2.5d with no walls. There is not much else you can do with these. Sure you can make them different sizes but you did the same thing there with 2.5d and next. And the building front might seem cool at first but after you have made 2 or 3 you learn not to waste time on those with some doors and windows will not only do but will be more versatile.
But lets take this back to the beginning. I do not find this build useful and I am sure others have the same feeling. There are a shit ton of hot knife videos but how many crafters have one or will spend the money on one? Originally your videos were about taking cheap trash and making cool stuff but now you rehash older things with a slight twist like no walls but an entire useless front. I realize you save the better stuff for people that will pay for it but I;m not one of those. Also begging for constant tip gets a bit old. So yes maybe I do not have the content on my channel you think I should but does that make my opinion null and void? Nope. And if you think insulting all your fans by insinuating their value is based on the amount of content they put out you need to look at your fan base a little closer. Sorry if i do not find your videos useful anymore but that in no way contrasts my channel and as a result my opinion being null and void. Maybe you should stick to the paid comments that I ma sure stroke your ego and tell you how great you are. I mean your only as important as your content right?
I am respectful to people that are respectful to me and your comment was neither productive or helpful. If I annoy you and you find my work useless then why watch my channel? Every other commenter has found this build useful so trying to lump others in your negativity is has no basis in fact.
