Hello Again! Loved loved loved this build - I just finished it tonight and have messed around with it. I need to figure out why the front right wheel axel isn’t supporting the weight of the defender but that’s another issue for another day 😂😂😂 - thank you for such a clear set of instructions. It boggles my mind that somone created this set in the first place, let alone being able to configure and motorise it! you are a genius! I went back and added the claw pull so it looks complete ❤
After some hardcore adventures in the forest i confirm: With your RC build and some minor modifications this is by far the best motorized lego model ever for crawling outside! The locked differential really makes the difference and, compared to previous lego crawler models, it also looks very nice. It also works perfect using brickcontroller 2 app and xbox wireless controller. Really nice work. Keep it up!
After this the 42110 is a must buy, since I already have the 42099. That model is great, but this combo has the best of both and you can still take it apart and build the super cool gearbox of the 42110 for a change... Thank you so much for the effort and making this available for us all to enjoy our expensive sets even more!
thank you so much for this amazing instructions, everything works perfectly and the model is amazing, i’m so thankful you made this thank you very much ❤️
Thanks for the instructions. Build this but moved the hub back a bit and made a functional winch (not controllable by RC). Only problem i have with this moc is that the stearing pins (red pins with the ball on top) keep unsnapping from the black ribbed part that moves from left to right when steering.

I've just made this and I love it!. Thanks for the instructions they were very clear, but if I could ask for one thing different, it would be to lay the parts out for a second or two before each build scene. It was a little difficult to try and get the right length axels etc. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you for the Instructions! I got my Land Rover Defender for christmas, built it and now rebuilt it with your instruction! It was really easy for an lego technic beginner like me to build it and now i‘m going to explore my garden with the motorised land rover☺️
You write 2 Electric motor powered up L and 1 Electric motor powered up XL, but looking on internet and what do you used I sw you used 1 Electric motor powered up L and 2 electric motor powered up XL.
I've build it last weekend and it's freakin' awesome. I've done a few modifications to the model. First i've build a small holding for a powered up m-motor (45303) to operate the winch with the BrickController2 app and second I've changed the planetary gear to the normal wheel holdings to get more speed. But if i want to get the powerful crawler back, it's just a 5min switch.
Thank you for instruction! It's amazing that you made such an additional work to your model for free for comunity! Today I'm starting disassembling 42110 and 42099 for this :D
I did it! This is my first Lego set, and decided I'll go the extra mile and try and go off the books, and your tutorial was so clear and helpful, thank you so much!
I am thinking of getting the set and motorising it too. It would be my first build in years and years, how straight forward would you say the build and adaptations are? :)
I've finally been able to get a 42099 at a reasonnable price and I also wanted to integrate the electrical parts into the Land Rover. I don't know if I challenge myself or if my laziness will win and will just follow your instructions. :) I take the opportunity of this comment to congratulate you for your work on the LEGO set. In my opinion it is really one of the best set of these last years and I take a lot of pleasure to work on and modify it.
I love the gearbox design.Basic but clever. I wont be making the rc version of this but i will be using the same pieces to make a different off road car but the gearbox design will be the same
Well, you did it the hard way ! I though you'll make a "reverse" video, but the model is way too complexe. That's a lot of work, thank you. The instructions are really clear.
Thanks for the video! Trying to motorize my defender with 3 L-motors fow about a week, it's a pain if you don't have much experience :) Two L motors fit nice under rear seats on their original place. Tried to make different gearbox, accidentally made fast gear with rear drive and slow gear with full drive :D "Fail but actually win" for the indoor play. Gave up on front suspension and hub mount, will make the same assembly as yours. Love how minimalistic your build is!
Nice instruction and clear to rebuilt. One issue with this I found is that the arms of the steering wheels tend to detach quite easily. Any suggestions? In the time of lockdown, I also manage to connect the winch to the neutral of the gearbox. It works pretty well!!
I've just bought the 42099 only to build this crazy 42110 motorized, but something isn't clear for me jet. Do I rebuild everything from scratch ( except the exterior body parts) ?

I’ld like to share my experience with you. I started with only the 42110 set and ordered everything from the provide stocklist. I didn’t have any other Lego parts, since this is my first Technic Lego I bought. While building I noticed that I was missing several pieces. Additional to the provided stocklist I had to order: 1xTechnic, Liftarm 1 x 15 Thick - 32278 (Black), since there are only two in the 42110 set and you need 4 in total. 2x Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges and Center Pin Hole 87082 (light bluish gray) 1x Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick L-Shape 3x5 32526 (light bluish gray) 3x Technic, Liftarm Thick 1x5 (light bluish gray) 4x Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges (blue) Instead of the long red axe I used the black one from 42110. So no need to order the red one. Disclaimer: maybe I used a small part like the pin 3L wrongly somewhere. But, better safe than sorry.
Sorry to hear that. I did not write the extra parts list and I rely on the author of it to be correct. If anybody pointed at any errors in it, I adjusted it accordingly. This Is what I have.
And what about 42099 after that rebuild - is it possible to build 42099 as a model for lets say just “decoration” purposes? Or it remains as a “trash” :) and spare parts for some another project?
I'm bumping previous question. Can you use electronics only (bought separately or taken from 42100 set) without planetary gearbox? I guess it wouldn't crawl that well but maybe it would drive reasonably faster? :) BTW thanks for great work with this mod!
You can still gear it down to gain more torque just where the two XL motors sit. I think it will drive but as you mentioned, it will not perform that well offroad.
Beautiful and great model! I am happy that you made instuctions, but I am not sure if I build the model. It is definitely on my wishlist! The video is very well made!
Hi, I have the 42100 set I can use for the electronics & misc parts but was wondering if I can simply use the 42110 steering hubs and steering CV joints? Will they survive or get destroyed vs the wider/larger ones from 42099? Thanks
I have built mine and it is awesome, although I have had some issues with the servo connection and the vehicle’s steering in general. I have used the technic wheel hub which comes with the set ( not the one which you have used) do you think this could be the reason for my issues.
The hubs should not have influence on servo calibration. But I would be very cautious with them since they are not meant for high torque applications which this model clearly is. If you are using the PF servo, it needds to be calibrated before built in. Powered Up motors calibrate every time you use them.
I I have fit in the motors and all other parts needed for the car’s motorisation as intended but while still using the original wheel hubs. Unfortunately it will only drive a couple metres and then the gears will start to slip and crack and the car will stop moving. Do you think this could be down to the lack of appropriate wheel hubs or a totally other unrelated issue.
I have the 42110 product but I don't have the 42099 product. Can I complete this assembly sufficiently by purchasing only the parts you listed in the description? Also, is it impossible to use the wheel product of 42110 as it is?
Great model and great motorization approach! That is really good when the author of MOC is building the model thinking about those who will repeat it with limited resources =) I mean not using details of 10+ various sets, but only two! By the way 42110 was my first technic model and I was really impressed by the level of attention to details, complexity of mechanisms and final look! Thanks for this model! ;) And now I bought 42099 to motorize 42110 - looking forward to do this. I also have one interesting question - probably you can shed some light on the topic :) From my point of view what is missed in new Powered Up Technic items is separate programmable remote controller, which could work without mobile device. Will it appear some day? As far as I understand it's quite hard to implement separate physical controller for Powered Up Technic models, as there are variety of functions in models which is hard to combine in one remote (comparing to Power Functions based models). But programmable remote controller would be a step forward comparing to Power Functions, not just replacement of old system. I mean programmable controller which works without mobile device - mobile device or PC could be used just for programming it.
A bit late answer, but you can easily pair up the new technic hub with any bluetooth gamepad (e.g. PS3/4 and others) with a control app on a mobile phone. The app you need is BrickController 2, available on Android
Really interesting seeing two motors working together like that for more force, I hadn't thought of that. Would a similar build be possible with the mindstorms motors, there the brick is bigger but the motors are smaller. Really impressed with the build. It's interesting to think about how when you are motorizing a model it isn't a matter of a few modifications, you're pretty much using the original design as inspiration only and starting over from scratch.
Great build but i don't know where you keep getting all these parts? I have the complete set and follow your every instruction and I keep coming up short on parts towards the end of the build. Really frustrating to keep inventing solutions for the missing parts. Did you really only use all the parts from the original 42110 and the parts in the description from the 42099 or did you use additional spare ones??
@@grohl666 Oh okay, I had to mix and match different parts to fit everything in but made it work in the end. Thanks for the build though, much more fun with a remote control! :)
@@grohl666 I follow you on Flickr but what should I look for on the screen once the application has started? does it appear defender or generic ? thanks for your kindness
I don’t see where you mean for the first mistake with the blue and black pins but apart from that the video was very clear and helpful. Keep up the amazing work!
if you do not switch them, the blue ones do not connect to anything. It is still going to work but the stability is improved if you do the simple swap of the black and blue connectors.
Hi, I don't understand what are the mistakes at 30:37 and 49:00. Therefore I don't know how to fix these two mistakes. If I ignore these mistakes will this model still work? Also, what is the portal hub you need from 42099? Is it the "Steering Axle with 2 Pin Holes, 2 Axle Holes and 2 Tow Ball Arms with Dark Bluish Gray Wheel Hub" item number 46490c01?
Glad to hear that. It takes some time to gain enough confidence to use your own voice in the videos but I think it is a lot easier than reading subtitles that get covered by the ads.
@@grohl666 I was watching your vids while building model 42110 and when your doing your speed builds it would have been so much more fun if you could hear a voice over soft music explaining what's happening. Trust me I've looked and there is not many so you would be unique. That aside keep tubing! (",)
You need to flip the device upside down. It is explained in the video in the description. Right now you can as well create your own profile in Powered Up app.
2:40 Is that a red 12L axle? I couldn’t find it in the set’s inventory. There is a single black one though, can I use it or is it used in future steps?
We’re planning on building this, but we only have the Land Rover set, not the other one. Would this be feasible without the other set parts if we were to buy the motor separately? Thanks :)
Hello, awesome build! If I'am watching it correctly I will need 1 battery box; 2 XL motors for moving back and forward and one L motor for steering. Please correct my if I'am wrong.
The full list Is in the pinned comment. If you know how to create a custom control profile in Powered up app, you can just use 3xL motor. Back then i was limited to using the official 42099 control + profile.
Hi! i Have just started this build first time into the world of Lego Technic - I have brought all the extra pieces listed above. However I cant seem to find the Red Piece you use at 2.40. The Ones that come with the LRD are shorter by a lot - and i don't think the Grey that's come with it are long enough either. Is this piece from the LRD or an extra add on to the list above. If so - do you recall what piece it is. I'm 100% convinced I've messed up somewhere as no one else seems to have this problem 0 but i cant for the life of me figure out there I have misplaced this piece!
Just use a black 12M axle that comes in the Defender instead. It is not part of the list since it is not needed unless you really want the part in red.
Just ordered the extra parts for this as couldn’t find a cheap 42099. Are there any PDF versions of this? I find it really hard to follow a video exactly for even short periods without getting huge migraines so have always used printed copies of instructions
@@grohl666 ok thanks, will I need to open all the bags straight away to find parts I need for early stages of the build or does it follow in a similar order. Can’t wait to get started!
So, I ordered all the parts needed and just finished building it. Amazing work! You did an awesome job. Can’t wait for my son to wake up and play with it. One question though - I couldn’t get the front steering to be 100% centered. It always centers at ~5 degrees left. I played with the axle forever and couldn’t get it to center… any idea why and how to fix?
I guess recalibrating the steering does not help? If it Is only 5° I would not worry too much. It is not a racecar and there Is anyway a bit of play in the steering.
Nope, recalibrating didn’t help. The problem is that steering left works great but steering right barely steers… still, a great ply indeed! The kids don’t mind 😂😂😂
The problem is that the arms doesnt have the exact size to work on this body. You need to change the size of the arms using a lighter to heat them and change the shape. Take off the arms from the wheel, Measure them to put the axle in the center and shape the arms carefully with a lighter. Its easy and works perfect.
I had the same problem and solved it. You have to rebuild the steering motor part, aligning everything straight. I remember when I first installed the steering motor, the hole where the shaft enters the motor was misaligned. That explains the difference. After calibrating and rebuilding, I made sure everything was properly aligned. Problem solved.
1:13:50 That dark-gray clutch connector at the bottom with the red gear and selector does not seem to do anything besides just being there. Or am I wrong?
It was so much fun to have this Land Rover motorized and then to play outdoors. Thanks for sharing your work.

If you are using the PF servo, it needds to be calibrated before built in. Powered Up motors calibrate every time you use them.
@@grohl666 Thankyou for the information
I I have fit in the motors and all other parts needed for the car’s motorisation as intended but while still using the original wheel hubs. Unfortunately it will only drive a couple metres and then the gears will start to slip and crack and the car will stop moving. Do you think this could be down to the lack of appropriate wheel hubs or a totally other unrelated issue.
Haven’t completed the build yet but is there a way to change gear easily ? into speed or crawler
Jus grab the shifting ring either from the cab or the bottom

I have the 42110 product but I don't have the 42099 product. Can I complete this assembly sufficiently by purchasing only the parts you listed in the description? Also, is it impossible to use the wheel product of 42110 as it is?
yes, the list should be 99,9% correct. you need to swap the wheel hubs otherwise the model does not have enough power
@@grohl666 Thanks you. I just ordered the parts. I'm like a kid waiting for a Christmas present. I really hope Motorize succeeds.

I do not know if the mindstorms hub would fit anywhere inside. I know the set inside out since I designed it So motorization was not such a big deal.
@@grohl666 Congrats on your job, I just bought 42110 I look forward to building it
I think the idea with 2 parallel motors is from the 42129 Zetros truck.
@@grohl666 I think many people (including me) overlook the fact, that you are the designer of the original model. I had no idea...
I did not create the list myself but kept it updated as soon as anyone pointed out a mistake. I used only parts of these two sets though.
@@grohl666 Oh okay, I had to mix and match different parts to fit everything in but made it work in the end. Thanks for the build though, much more fun with a remote control! :)

The answers are in the subtitles in the video and in the pinned comment. The model will functions normally.
I’ve done this myself with a XL motor. I put this motor right where the fake motor was-axles bending, things warping
If you want to RC anything, get the motors as close to the wheels as possible.
@@grohl666 yeah I know...I only had one motor
I like the vids when you talk instead of the music.
Glad to hear that. It takes some time to gain enough confidence to use your own voice in the videos but I think it is a lot easier than reading subtitles that get covered by the ads.
@@grohl666 well tbh you have a very nice voice ;) and are easy to understand so hopefully we will hear you more on next videos :)
@@grohl666 I was watching your vids while building model 42110 and when your doing your speed builds it would have been so much more fun if you could hear a voice over soft music explaining what's happening. Great job! But something goes wrong. Defender go left instead right and viceversa and go forward instead backward and viceversa. Where i do wrong?
You need to flip the device upside down. It is explained in the video in the description. Right now you can as well create your own profile in Powered Up app.
Nice instructions, but the front springs are just to weak because the steering rod disconnect when steering. I'm trying to solve the problem.
I never had that issue, sorry to hear that.

Is that a red 12L axle? I couldn’t find it in the set’s inventory. There is a single black one though, can I use it or is it used in future steps?
Go for the black one. I borrowed it from 42099.
@@grohl666 thanks!
Thanks
I realised that 2 Xl motors are used for movement, but what's this for turns? Servo motor or regular M?
Powered Up L motor
We’re planning on building this, but we only have the Land Rover set, not the other one. Would this be feasible without the other set parts if we were to buy the motor separately? Thanks :)
I do not think the electronic parts are for sale separately.
The electronic parts are available in the bay, but not the crawlers planetary hubs
do i have to complete disassembling the car for this ?? is really looks amaizing and i want to do the same to my LR ! thx
Bags 3 and 4 are the same.
Nice build. I want to do it too. I got a buwizz 2.0, 2 xl motors and servo. Where do i attach these parts? Or is there anything else i need? Tia

@@grohl666 ok, thanks but isn't it better when it has xl motors than l's.

Hi! i Have just started this build first time into the world of Lego Technic - I have brought all the extra pieces listed above.

@@barelomer I would try to make a Custom profile in the Powered Up App or any compatible one.
I want to know what parts i can but to Build that also! It looks Amazing!😉👍🏼can you please advice what to but?? So cool!!
Check the Pinned comment.
Hey, can you make one with the old power fictions motors as well?
You can easily try to do that yourself.
Do i need to take apart the whole thing?
You can leave whatever was built in bags 3 + 4 but the chassis is almost a complete rebuild.
Is it possible to do it without two XL motors and only one?
The car would be very weak and I do not think it would drive in the high gear.
