Ep136: Weaning piglets and moving them out to pasture
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 чер 2018
- After spending just under two weeks in the weaning pasture, it is time to let the piglets out and put them on their own pasture separate from the sows. Here they will spend the rest of their time on the homestead in this pasture. We had some electrical fence issues that had to be fixed prior to moving them but once that was fixed it was go time. When Liam and I tried to herd them from the weaning paddock, they thought we wanted to play!

Swine wrangling the latest in country workout videos! LOL
Wow, what a laugh I had watching you try to round up those pigs.. thanks for the fun...
Yes, we are part farm and part circus routine around here.
I like the face you made when the feeder tip over on it's side.
Yes, that is my "let's gently set that down right here....Oh, crap" face
There's a cast concrete paving product meant for situations like the mud wallow or loosened dirt around the feeder. The pavers are mostly empty space for filling with soil that hopefully will be further stabilised by grass roots whenever there aren't pigs there, but there's enough concrete to stabilise the whole area of the paver.
the lil piglets like you you only need some food and they will fallow you lmao. it was funny watching. i was observing the happy little pigs your there hero mud and all lol
lmao how much fun you get to have with them
They are a fun animal to raise.
From calfs up we carried a ten qt galvanized pail with their favorite chop in it, always tapping the side n making a noise or call, ( only time used this noise was then) Later as adults when we wanted to move them, that pail was like a powerful magnet.
Them cows come just a trotting, I'm thinking pigs be same way, aw maybe I'm just a old fool too.
No, you are completely correct. My sows know the sound of my side by side as a feed opportunity. They will follow it anywhere. These piglets are learning the sound of the feeder lid slamming, that is how they are responding now.
Red Tool House - Homestead I had a victory moment t'other day when my heifer walked down from the top fence in answer to my call. I didn't have a bucket with me for her, I had a piece of watermelon rind and some honey locust pods, but she seemed to agree that had been worth the walk.
I ginally got my pigs to leave the training pen. It was wide open for 3 months!!! That zap is a real deterant.
They remember quickly what it feels like.
LOL - wouldn't it be easier to be the "Pied Piper" and get them to follow you, than to try to push them?
I've heard it said you should return from the trip when you start to look
like your passport picture. What should you do when you start to look
like a farmer? Something about the mud....
I think food will help next time mate just put it outside the gate where you want them to go,,,
I might have missed it somewhere, but how do they get water? We're trying to do something similar and that's the big question for us right now
what brand of charger do you use?
I use a Patriot. I have a 4.5 joule but the 3.5 joule works well too and is a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Here is our amazon link to it. amzn.to/2IH7TVk
Trail of Corn 🐖
We got our first batch of piglets in February and discovered the most powerful tool known to pig farmers. It's a bit unconventional but once introduced, it turns pigs into putty that can be molded, moved, manipulated (in a good way)and made to do whatever you want them to. 3 simple words. White. Powdered. Doughnut.
That usually motivate me to do things I shouldn't. Lately I have been using surplus cheese and peanut butter crackers.

They have access to a stream. We have a stream that goes through the middle of our land. The pastures cross over it in multiple places so all pastures have water access. We also build small impoundments to catch run off from the mountains. Our red clay makes perfect ponds.
