    I love salvias & have them planted everywhere in my N Central coastal CA garden, even in pots. Hummers, bees, butterflies, & especially humans ❤ all the different profusion of colors & heights. Looking forward to seeing the new varieties in the garden centers between here & San Jose.

    Slugs. Watch out for milky slugs. They love salvia. Powdery mildew. Avoid overhead watering unless you have Impeccable air flow to dry the foliage out. Most years my salvia will put out a spectacular show of electric blue flowers all summer. Other years it's a wet cold spring and a struggle to pick out and bait for slugs early on. And once the powdery mildew gets a toe hold- you'll never get it out and have a nice bloom show so you might as well cut them to the ground and hope for next year. That usually works.

    Would Salvias pair well with Lavender? I have a 4 foot long by 18" wide and high very heavy cement pot and was planning on planting a Salvia in the middle with two Lavender plants on each side. I also have a tall planter close by with a butterfly bush with a combo of white, blue, and purple flowers that also attracts pollinators.
    BTW, what a beautiful space you've created. I can only imagine what a privilege it must be to be engulfed by it. One with nature, for sure. Thanks.

    Gorgeous. New gardener over here... thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Your talent and skills are inspiring. How do you keep salvia from spreading out or falling down? Mine always looks terrible mid season. Does spacing have something to do with that or cutting them back? Seems like they’re so top heavy.

    • @ProvenWinnersYouTube
      @ProvenWinnersYouTube  3 роки тому +2

      Sorry for the delayed response, they would benefit from a shearing back at this point. If they do not have enough sun they will not bloom as prolifically and they might spread out like this too.
      If you cut them back about ½, they will likely have re-bloom as well.
      Thank you and have a great week!

    I planted a small Salvia in my garden bed, but it died very fast. In retrospect, I'll try it again. This time I"ll place them in a pot to let them get big first. Seems like I need to plant bigger, stronger plants in the my landscape and weather.

  • @JoPurpleLove

    Your dirt quality is gorgeous. The salvias too. I love salvia. I moved into an 8 year old house afew years ago that has poor compacted soil in All the beds. Some are very shallow before you start reaching bad soil mixed with rock. Anytime I dig for new plants or changing plant position I'm afraid I've stirred up a new spot to have horsetail pop through in certain areas. I can't till it or I'll get it cropping up even more. Some areas I'm having a hard time just keeping it under control. Any tips or videos to amend the soil without bring a mass horsetail army? I've heard horsetail likes bad soil which I'm sure is somehow the problem.

    First I want to thank you for all your great videos. They are very informative. Especially for the newbie gardener. My question I have is if there is any difference between the Color Spires line and the Profusion Line for the Salvia?

    • @olaflangness2907
      @olaflangness2907 3 роки тому +1

      I just saw a PW video where they answered your question. The Profusion line are exclusively Salvia nemerosa varieties that have lots of spires of smaller flowers, and can be sheared back for rebloom up to 3 x a season. The color spire series are mostly hybrids with another Salvia species that gives the plant fewer spires but larger flowers. They can rebloom but not as reliably or as often as the Profusion salvias.

    I have salvias that I planted about 4/5 years ago and they quite large. They end up sort of separating out in the middle around June usually. We cut them back and they grow nicely back late summer. I’m wondering if we should cut the plant up and separate it so it doesn’t spread out and leave a barren hole in the center?

      I’m not sure if they are part of the salvia family 🤔It looks very similar to all the other salvia plants. I love it, and I’m never let down by it.

    What is a good perenniel for in front of my porch that gets mostly shade? I live in So. Calif.

      Use this search tool on our website to find perennials for the shade, lots of good choices. Some will be great in medium containers, others will need larger ones. www.provenwinners.com/plants/search

    Well, first of all, you are cute as a button! I am 62 years old and really had no interest in gardening until about 30 years ago. I am in PA, zone 6, like you, and have 3 gorgeous salvia plants. We had a wicked rain/wind storm two nights ago and they are all drooping. They still have their beautiful blue/purple spikes, but I was wondering if they will start standing again on their own, should I support them with stakes or leave them alone? Thank you for your help!

      Give them a little help now, and see if they recover from there.

    Will these do well in pots?

      Yes, in large pots. But they would fare better in the landscape.

    I planted 3 salvia last year, loved them but only one came back. :( Where did i go wrong? It was a mild winter...

      Probably needed winter water. Remember the roots at plantng time are near the top of soil and subject to dry out quickly.

    Can you plant these salvias in a container and just let them grow?

    Think I have the indigo girl, I've had these for 3 years. This year they just don't flower right. It's like I have flowering stems that go in a circle but in the middle it's just stems that look dead, like a hole in the middle. I have three plants and two are doing this. They get alot of sun and I water when needed faithfully. Not sure why it's looking like this. Janice

    Just bought some for May 2022. First time gardening. Lots of work planting them in hard soil. :(

      It is, amend the soil a bit to help loosen it so the roots have more room to grow.
