- Here I am testing my new Gretsch Catalina drum kit for the first time. Mainly recorded via the overhead mics, some snare and bass drum close mics added with minimal EQ.
Only one take jam without editing but with a few mistakes! ;) Have Fun!
There are short clips in the video where you can hear the pure drums without the backingtrack:
1) 1:15
2) 2:27

No doubt that these drums are great in their class and price range but it's hard to find fault with an instrument on any level when the instrumentalist performs so flawlessly. Honestly I forgot that this was an instrument ad; such an amazing and inspiring performance... Thank you!
Thanks a lot!
Came for the drums, stayed for the playing! ✌🏼
Haha thanks that's awesome😁
Yes, the Catalina kit has this modern/vintage vibe, this kit is perfect for this music.
This just goes to show what this smart little kit can achieve when you have someone who knows what they're doing behind it. Top class sound!
Thank you!🫶
Very sweet sound. Catalinas, amazing kits!
Yes I love this kit!
I’ve been on the fence between these and a Yamaha stage custom bop kit. Gaaahhh!!! Absolutely still there - great playing!!
I did play the Yamaha bop kit as well at the store...left it with the gretsch🤭
I have the Catalina Club Jazz kit (cocktail size) which - as you show - has a much bigger sound than you would imagine could ever come out of such a small kit. The mahogany shells with the 30-degree bearing edges make the biggest difference from other kits. Great playing.
I've been playing since the 60's and this is by far, the best kit I've ever owned. I now play in smaller venues with acoustic instruments and the sound of this kit is also perfect.
Bloody fantastic, mate! The drums and playing are top-notch in my ledger!
Thank you!
I have the Catalina Club in blue Satin Flame with the 20" bass drum. They are killer. Mahogany shells are amazing. I've played maple and birch my whole life but mahogany are now my favorite!
I am a huge fan of mahogany since i bought this kit. I played bubinga before for a long time. Like it very much but its so heavy haha. For smaller gigs mahogany is more practical :P And the sound is just beautiful
Friggin' fantastic groove, fills, and relaxed playing. Loved it!
Thanks a bunch for this great example. I've been ogling this drum kit (with these sizes) for years and years now intending to buy them one day, and it seems that this year I finally will! And this example is great and re-affirming why I love this kit. It's so versatile that even with these tunings it just works so well and doesn't lose out to drums with bigger sizes -or- bigger price tags. It's nice to finally see a vid that showcases this because most vids play into the fact that the small sizes make it a great jazz, jungle or hiphop kit. And they do! But it's a great funk and even rock kit as well in my opinion.
Thank you! Its totaly fun to play in Rock and Funk music! This bassdrum sounds huge although it is a 18"!
I have this set. Do not be surprised at how versatile it is. With the right heads and proper tuning, it can sound very big or as soft as a kitten, depending on the sticks and how you play. Amazing sound with the 30-degree bearing edges!
The snare is so AWESOME, and got to give it up for the bass player as well. Super pocket. The kind of jam I could listen to for hours!!!!!
Very nice! I caught myself air drumming...hehe. Also love Byzance Sand series.
Haha yeah! 😁 Really beautiful cymbals! 🥰
I mean... This groove AF! Well done!
Thank you very much!🙏✨
Great drumming . I love that fill at 2:16
Thanks!
Nice playing and a great pocket. The snare is killing.
Thanks! :)
This is so well constructed. Makes me want to play drums 🔥
Yeah just do it!
Hell yeah!! This is so soulful!
Great playing and tone!
Thank you!
Sweet groove . Great pocket !
Thanks a lot!
I wish I could like this more than once!
Haha I wish that too :D
Love that groove man miss hearing stuff like this. Nice job almost a Power of Tower sound. Seriously thinking on getting a Catalina kit soon. thanks!!
Didn't hear the mistakes. You made them groove. The cymbals crash and ride beautifully with plenty of stick. Good job!
Enjoy the kit. Great video. Solid and steady. Great playing.
Thanks!
So good to listening to. Slick smooth sound!
Thanks!
this is how you review drums, take my money!
💰💰
I’ve been considering this kit since I live in a large city and the 22/16/12 sizes aren’t big city friendly. My playing style for the main gigging band is similar to what you played here, and this kit sounds wicked good I must say! And I liked your hi hat work, the bark and accent/ghost dynamics added to the groove.
Thanks a lot! I know what you mean - I really love these sizes for many different reasons haha :D
This kit can play as quietly as you want and still be able to deliver a powerful punch. Mahogany shells and 30-degree bearing edges give a wonderful blend of funk or jazz.
Great! Groove! Flow! Love it!
Thanks! :)
Damn dude, this was fucking sick! Excellent groove
Thank you very much!
Drums sound great but your playing and groove speaks more that makes the music and the kit sound amazing
Thanks a lot!
Ooofff! Sick groove, man!
Thank you!
Great! It's so funky. I'd like to buy the Catalina dum Kit and play like you!
I'm practicing this song. Timo, you are one of my drum teachers.
Thank you for uploading this video!
(I got to know SWATKINS through this video.)
Oh wow thank you! Means a lot to me!
When I have to teach the term "groove" to my children I will show them this video
❤
Ohhhh... that was tight!!!!!
Thanks a lot man!
Fantastic playing, man!
Thank you! :)
Amazing groove!
Thanks a lot!
That fill with the floor tom was so nice
Thank you!
@@Schremmo no problem 👍
Yes you got it....👍😎
Great groove and sound.
Thanks man :)
Great playing and the drums sound great!
Thank you Jeff! 😊
@@Schremmo you're welcome!
Great drumming.
Thanks!
Very groovy playing.
Thanks mate!
Love the playing, drums and cymbals. I have the Tama Superstar Classic 18/12/14 but I want to change it one of these, I've been blown away with the demo's I've seen. I may get the 20x14 bass drum though as I'm never mic'd up.
I just can highly recommend to play on a catalina! :)
All Catalinas are highly recommended for any genre.
Nice groove, sir! 👌👍
Thank you!
Yes
👏🏻. 👏🏻
Needless to say, I like this style very much. ;)
Thank you! Me too! ☺️🤙
🤘💘 Big NUTS Bro
Very nice drumming.
Thank you!
Grymt lir🎶🏆🥁
Great playing, and a great kit. I've got the same but the previous version with the square badge. Btw, where are the mistakes? Probably only the drummer knows :)
Cool song and great playing! What cymbals are you using?
Thanks! I am using Meinl Byzance Sand 14" HH, 18" Sand Crash and 20" Sand Ride all Benny Greb signatures :)
awesome playing and kit sounds great! Can I ask where you got that track without drums? Looks like fun to play
Thank you! This is not a drumless version! I just muted the complete Song in the „Drums Only“ Parts. In the Rest of this Track you can hear the original Drums as well
The Catalina wooden snares seem to have a bad rep , I bought one second hand , online as cheap as chips , mainly because it was a white marine pearl finish and I have a couple of early 60s Ludwig Super Classics and it was a near enough match . It sounded great , right out of the box , didn't even change the lightly used heads ... now I use it whenever I need a woody sound rather than my ' go to ' 6 1/2 Supra . I've done a couple of albums with it and I will use it tomorrow night in a polished wood and glass venue where the Luddie is just overbearing .
Change the hoops on the toms to better ones, and this kit will sound even better than it already does. Great playing and sound 👍
Oh that sounds interesting. can you recommend any?
@@Schremmo I have two of these kits in 20/12/14. One kit has gibraltar 2.3 hoops and one has gretsch 302 hoops. They are pretty similar sounding. The 302s have just a bit more attack; I'd say sustain is the same. The 302 kit is louder. Changing from 1.6 to either of these was drastic, much more full tone to them. All the nasty overtones are gone and only the "good" overtones are left. I don't know how else to explain it. Quite a bit more focused sound. I've owned Saturns, Masters, and some other good kits and I'm completely satisfied with these catalinas as long as they have upgraded hoops.
Nice work 👍
I am literally on the way to purchase these drums just now.
Just wondering, how did you approach running that kick drum?
That's a great plan I can highly recommend!
What exactly do you mean by running that kick drum? The installation, sound or something else?
@@Schremmo Think he wanted to know what ran your kick drum. I'll take the liberty of answering for you. You used your foot, right?
Awesome playing! I have the same kit, are you using stock head for bass drum ? great bass sound
Yes its the stock head and I really dont wanna change it :D
Great groove...
Great playing, you deff. are a funky guy
You have it in you.
How did you achieve that sound( i dont see any micks)
Tx J.p.
Thank you! There is a snare mic and a kick mic which I added in the mix a tiny bit. The main sound is coming from the overheads which you can't really see in this video
Great groove. Is that a crash on your right side? Has a nice wobble
Thank you! No its the Meinl Byzance Sand 20" Ride Benny Greb Signature
Hell yea dude, nice chops! What cymbals are you using, if you wouldn't mind saying?
Thanks! I am using Meinl Byzance Sand 14" HH, 18" Sand Crash and 20" Sand Ride all Benny Greb signatures :)
@@Schremmo Wicked. Thanks man
Swatty is one of my best friends. Playing with him next week in fact. Does he know you did this? Sounds great!
hi casey! Yeah this is really cool 😎
Haha ya thanks man! He already shared this on Instagram which made me really happy!
@@Swatkins Thank you, I love that song!
and is this kit good for FUNK music in your opinion? thanks for the vid!
Yes it is! :)
What size of cymbals are you using? Love them!!
I play 14" HH, 16" Crash & 20" Ride :)
Goes without saying, great playing. Where do you source your Drumless tracks?
Thank you! This is not a drumless Track. I now use lalalai for seperating stems!:)
Ah right I’ll look into that programme. Cheers
Got mine but can’t get it to this tunning… how would you say it’s tunned to? Low or mid? Any tips to get it similar?
Hard to say 🤔 it's more a mid range of the toms, kick is kinda low. I don't really like the snare sound anymore I got in this video. Now I tune it way higher so it sounds more funky. Love that!
What drum sizes are you using (diameter/depth)?
Hey its a
18" x 14" Bass Drum
12" x 08" Tom
14" x 14" Floor Tom
14" x 5,5" Snare Drum
Is a 18 or 20 kick?
It's a 18! :)
I LIKE YOUR RIDE, WHAT IS IT?
It's a 20" Meinl Sand Benny Greb Signature
Catalina Mahogany club ? If so this is t tve glossy walnut finish Then what is it
Thanks
Its 100% Mahogany but with a Satin Walnut Glaze (SWG) finish
What was that bit about "Drums failed"?
I just failed the fill I wanted to play :D
I whish thet gretsch will do mahagony drums in normal sizes
is this the Catalina CT1-J484?
yes exactly! :)
promosm ✨
Notes🗒️ 😢
Why to buy a expensive drumset?? This kit sounds and looks professional..
Yes, that's why I love this kit so much. For a relatively small price you get a super nice looking and super nice sounding drum kit. I currently use it rather than my other one, which has cost a fivefold
