    What would you choose between the Forester and the Crosstrek?!

    • @ryankarisiu
      @ryankarisiu 5 років тому +2

      I'm thinking to get a 2020 6-speed manual Crosstrek. I prefer the smaller size of Crosstrek and manual trans. On the other hand, I don't mind paying more to have the 2.5 N/A engine in the Crosstrek if available. Making the final drive and 6th gear taller around 2400-2600 rpm at 70 mph would be perfect.

    I test drove a 2018 yesterday.I was surprised at the refinement of the car. Also, this car definitely has sufficient power, I actually thought it was fun to drive. The people calling for more HP are simply wrong..it's not a sports car..

    • @infestedalien

      I test drove it yesterday 2.0 version Ridge. Agree the power is enough indeed. But as a levorg GTS-owner I miss the turbo just because I'm acustome in having it :-). However the steering wheel feels very bad in "quality feeling when touching it" Felt almost like to put hands on a basket ball. And agree completely, a very fun car to drive! Felt very light and nice

    Thanks for your review.
    We bought one of these 2018 Crosstrek vehicles. Premium grade, quartz blue, with CVT. Tired of shifting all the time with manuals... That's a been done. Now we have over 800 miles on it. Not even broke in yet! First, there is only two of us. Kids are all out of the nest. Already did the miniVan thing :) . This cross-over fits us to a T. Living in Montana we get snow and we have a lot of dirt roads to travel on in the hills, plus the highways. We plan on using this in the mountains (not jeep style 4 wheeling of course) to get us there. I have a 4X4 Ram Truck for tougher roads/no roads. Anyway, looked for a vehicle that has good ground clearance, all wheel drive or 4WD, and reasonably priced, small, yet not cramped and of course good for around town driving, with just enough cargo space. Ended up looking at the Jeep Renegade and the CrossTrek after researching. Crosstrek won us over. Good mileage, big fuel tank 16+ gallons (relatively) and much better 'looking'. Plus was all wheel drive, x-mode, plenty of headroom (concern for me). Easy to get in and out of with that extra ground height (yet not like hopping up into a Jeep Wrangler, nor bending down to get into a sports car) Power? From what we do, it appears to adequate. Cruises easy 80mph on the highway. Went up and over the great divide no problem even with two more people in the back seat (yes, you knew they were there!) . Passing isn't a big problem (certainly not a V8 style). Know what you have. Felt good in the corners. Road noise doesn't seem to be bad either. Turning radius is very good. Subaru has a good safety and reliability rating. What's not to like?
    We don't see what people see in a sunroof. We had a Acura RSX with one and felt it was a'useless' excessory. So we didn't go for that option. In fact we only went with the bumper protector, trunk mat, and splash/rock guards. Oh, and a compass mirror. That's it. Believe the winter package came with (defrosters and such). Now, who cares about 'infotainment'? Just more stuff to go wrong. AM/FM is all we really need and usb ports, but alas stuck with all the other stuff. Backup camera is nice though. Oh, added some nice Weather Tech floor liners front and back, for that winter muck, and summer mud. Fit like a glove. Use WT in all my vehicles.
    Interestingly, my wife liked the 2017 wheel style better than the new one. Guess I kind of do to. Oh well :) .
    Anyway, so far so good. See how it handles the first winter here.

      @marchoude2303 7 років тому +1

      "Who cares about infotainment" pretty much everyone under 50...that's kind of a large market but I'm glad you got the vehicle that's right for you.

    • @rclark59701
      @rclark59701 7 років тому +1

      We are just over 50. To bad it doesn't have a cassette player ;) . Actually wish the CD player was 'standard'. I would think it is would be like AM/FM but, no, ... only available in the Limited.

      I was going for the quartz blue but opted for a pure red in the end as I felt it stands out a bit more. They don't offer a green or a yellow.

    In my first Subaru I ever owned which I still have, I found the electronics in Subaru's to be very reliable so I don't mind the "Helter Skelter" or pot pourri you described the switch ware to be! I was surprised to hear the switches and relays when I first got my 2006 Forester when you turn on the key...I thought.... that sounds hokey, I hope its reliable over and over. Well I stand corrected it has been unfaltering for years in all kinds of weather and temperatures, everything works every single time no matter whats going on. Its true in cold climates and snow you want utility to get thru bad weather, sometimes up and down steep mountains or hills, in blizzards and fog, so the creature comforts or zero to 60 stats take a back seat. I like my Subie for that dependability in bad weather and everything works like it should for a very long time and you always get home safe!

    Subaru's with the CVT are *not* full-time 4wd, they decouple past 20mph to save fuel. The only full-time symmetric all wheel drive is in the manual transmissions, hence the fuel penalty

  • @mscott7426
    @mscott7426 2 роки тому +1

    I like your reviews and the things you touch on that other reviewers miss, like how the car seat fits and impacts front passenger. Subaru claims basically the same measures for the Impreza and Crosstrek (other than ride height and ground clearance of course) but while the impreza cargo space was 'a bit small' the crosstrek was 'pretty good'. this could have just a misread of some spec sheet, but it seemed to influence the perceived space. It was 4 years ago though so I guess I'll let it slide ;). I'm mostly just bummed they didn't put the 2.5L in the impreza, and pair it with a manual.

      I don’t understand why so many people want a super charged engine in a car that was never meant for racing. It’s a family car, not a mustang gt. Not everyone wants a car for speed, most people want cars for travel and taking friends to movies theaters and parks.

      I disagree with having a turbo to increase the horsepower. You’d have a hard time controlling it off road. They should increase the hp to 180 to satisfy those who crave a bit more power. I have a 6 speed manual and I really love it now that I have it broken in.

    Good review Paul, I got the 2017 Crosstrek for one of my step-daughters at UBC this past June. She loves it and can't wait for Whistler to open up and try it with the studded tires I made sure she got. I wish I knew about the rear breaking before this new model cause I just know its gonna happen sooner or later at school. Too bad you didn't have any winter driving in it, you sure got the snow last week and will be getting more this week too with the Mazda.

    I loved the looks, and wanted something with a seat height farther off the ground (bad knees), so I bought the Premium in Orange. I could only stand it for 10 weeks. An automatic transmission might have been better, but I dislike automatics. The Crosstrek's manual transmission itself was fine, but the clutch / throttle interaction was the worst of any car I've ever driven, and I'm 75. It was comfortable once it was going, and the fuel mileage was OK (29 mpg hwy) on the one trip I made in it, but it was impossible to drive comfortably in traffic due to the overly-sensitive clutch. I traded it after 2200 miles, giving up a manual transmission for the much better fuel mileage of a Kia Niro hybrid.

      Oh okay that makes sense. Maybe the WRX engine without the turbo (aka the BRZ/FRS/GT 86 or 86 engine) would be a cool option to have on a Crosstrek, too. I like Subaru a lot, I just don't understand why they kind of stopped making cars for the car enthusiast, apart from WRX and WRX STi.

    I partially agree the safety system is good, but the M.Benz models can come with an infrared camera that lights up living things on the road in front of you at night. That's the difference between braking for a deer about to hop onto the road in front of you at night; compared to totally nailing it & totaling your car...

    @familywheels so I went to a Subaru dealership, I got a quote for 2018 crosstracks the sport for like 34 K and the limited for 37 K, do you think those price points are fair or reasonable I test drove and I thinks it's just beautiful the HP is more than enough it didn't seem like it was under powered at all. So my question is should hackle more and what price point would be fair would u say if u had buy this car again thanks look forward to ur response

    How did the 2018 Crosstrek perform when passing on the highway? Is it as "dangerously" slow as a few commenters elsewhere have mentioned?

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  6 років тому

      I've heard the "dangerous" power level comments as well. And honestly, it's not as responsive as I would've like during highway cruising but it was still adequate - like a Honda Fit, for example. Certainly more of a city car.

    • @rclark59701
      @rclark59701 6 років тому +3

      Passes just fine. Sure it isn't the press on the gas, smoke the tires, and 'whip around the car your passing' type car, but more than adequate. I don't know why more power is such a 'big deal'. Been driving now since we got our '18 in the fall of last year and we really enjoy driving it. Winter roads it handles like a champ too. Dangerous power level? No way. Comfortable amount of power, yes. Does the job nicely. It is NOT a sports car.

      Thank you for your review and feedback! I did end up buying the 2018 Crosstrek and LOVE IT. I live in the BC interior and it's a perfect fit for myself and two teens. Power level is more than adequate. I'll buy a rocket box for more storage when camping.

    I test dove this car yesterday. I am accustom to Levorg leather steering wheel. The feeling of XV-steering wheel is terrible bad unfortunantly, it feels so cheap. Otherwise this is a fun car and feels responsive in steering and not so heavy feeling from complete stopped to moving. The suspensions are good also and not to hard and not to soft. Altho the steering wheel is a big disapointment. The buttons for the window elevators feels terrible also, they are not so responsive back in feeling as on the old interior like levorg etc. I fear the steering wheel and window buttons will be the same for all new models of subaru 2019?

      The Rogue Sport. I waited patiently for its itroduction to the USA because of its great reviews in Europe. What a disappointment. It road roughly and was not even near the car that the Rogue was. But, I ended up with a compact car, smaller than the Rogue and so much better than the the Roque Sort with tons of features and a great 6 speed drive that the CVT could not touch. It is called the 2017 KIA Sportage EX.

      They keep saying that we can't put all these advance safety features (automatic braking/collision avoidance, lane departure mitigation, adaptive cruise) on a manual transmission (e.g. It would stall the engine during the full stop collision avoidance) but that's not true. The cars in the European market in manual have these automatic safety features. Also, for the US market, the new 2018 Honda Accord has a manual transmission in a trim with the Honda sensing package.

    I don't care much for the extra ride height. Given the regular Impreza hatchback is about ~$2k cheaper, gets better fuel economy & drives better due to lower centre of gravity, you have to be a constant off-road cottage driver to make the tradeoff worthwhile.

    • @mikea9530

      The extra ride height is great for getting in and out of, plus it helps with the snow and rocks. Here we get about 6 months of winter, so should be a '+'. The vehicle is 'practical'. I think that is the right 'word'. Works for us.

      Our family owned an Impreza from the last generation, bought in the summer about 5 years ago now. Great car, but when we had our first snow storm, the car couldn't make it very far out of the garage because of its low ground clearance. My family traded it in for a Forester and have loved it and never had an issue getting it through the snow. I invested in a Crosstrek about 6 months ago and have also not had a problem with ground clearance and snow. But I think you're definitely correct, if you live in more urban areas/warmer climates. I rode in my friend's Impreza and it was nearly identical to my Crosstrek in a lot of ways.

    I should be Subaru's customer as I'm in the market for an AWD wagon but I won't even consider their cars because they look and feel so cheap. I also live in the Rockies and 150 hp turns into 120 hp at altitude without a turbo to compensate which frankly becomes a safety issue. I will not entrust my family to a car that struggles to keep up with semi trucks on mountain passes and can't merge into 75 mph highway traffic.
