  • Is it actually possible that there's an easy way to make paper mache clay with DAP drywall joint compound, even though I've been telling you for years that it won't work? Yes, evidently it is. Thanks to @rhearogue3970 who shared the tip.

    That's an amazon.com affiliate link, but I just bought mine at the little hardware store down the street from me. It's probably easy to find in any DIY store, but they have a lot of different kinds of glue. This is the only one that's been tested with the DAP drywall joint compound for paper mache clay.

    This is great news because my local Walmart is really limited and only sells DAP

      That's the way it is in a lot of places - that company really took over the market. The little store in my town only sells DAP, too.

    The first bucket of joint compound I bought was the DAP. It worked for me with Elmer’s School Glue, but I figured I just got lucky. So, I bought the only other brand I could find in my area which just happens to be Wurth. Lol! I’m glad you showed that we can test it with just the joint compound and glue to see if it’ll work before committing to a larger amount. Luckily, I have some of that Gorilla wood glue on hand, too.

      That's interesting - I wonder if the school glue works as well as the Gorilla wood glue with DAP - it's a lot less expensive. I think I tried it years ago with non-DAP joint compound, and I didn't like it but can't remember why not. I'll pick some up next time I go into town, and try it. Thanks for the comment!

      @@UltimatePaperMache you're welcome! I'll try out the School Glue with the Wurth joint compound to see if it also works out soon.

    Elmer's glue all is made with Polyvinyl acetate, Polyvinyl alcohol, and Propylene glycol. Different places online, and some crafters like to say it's water proof after drying. But, when I pulled about a 1/4" thick dried (for several weeks) formed "cookie" out of a cut off plastic bottle in the garage, and started pulling it and playing with stretching it, the sweat from just my hands started making it very sticky. I threw it back into the bottle and added a few dribbles of water, where in before my eyes, it flippin dissolved back into white glue. Glue All ain't all THAT unfortunately. I just cut to the chase and started using TB II and III for my mixes, for a lot of projects. In my climate, I'd rather spring for better glue and results, so anything won't disintegrate on me. The TBs are wood glues, so may work much like the Gorilla with DAP JCs with the gelling agent included in the formula.

      Good points! I don't think the Elmer's company has ever claimed that Glue-All is waterproof, but I agree that a lot of people believe it, anyway. I always use the TiteBond III for my theater masks, for many of the reasons you mention. I haven't tried it in the paper mache clay recipe, but it would be worth testing - so I just did. It turns out that TiteBond III turns into a rubbery blob when mixed with DAP joint compound, but TiteBond Original worked just fine. Weird... :)

      @@UltimatePaperMache I just remembered I had whipped up some TB III and the DAP Dry Dex (doesn't have gelling agent in it's formula), several weeks ago and wrapped up in some press n seal, and left out in an unfinished addition. I just squeezed the ball and it's still clay. I had made a sample when I made it. Seems I remember it took a little more time to completely harden. It was hard, but a bit flexible the day after. But, we also had more humidity then. By the next day it was prolly hammer smacking worthy lol. I have a lot of other JC to use up, and those work with TB III. So, there is waterproofing built into the recipe for me. Just a little added assurance. Will still coat and seal things that might even have a potential of getting damp/wet, but I certainly feel better about it than with Glue All lol.

      I've only used silicone molds with paper mache, except for the plaster molds that work with Li-Qua-Che, a commercial brand of pourable paper mache. So I don't know what release you can use, but I'd love to know how you made paper mache that can be poured into a mold! And what kind of mold are you using? 😊

      @UltimatePaperMache I've built the moulds with card and layers of newspaper pasted over with wood glue,to make oval picture frames with integral picture plane.Ive been experimenting by greasing the mould and then layers of papiermache...a bit time consuming,and want something thicker....Next am going to try greasing and then putting a mix of woodglue and sawdust......thank you for your help👍

    I wonder if wood glue works with any spackling compound. Wood glue dries extremely hard and I use it to join metal wire pieces for dollhouse headboards. It hold like cement! I think I'll substitute wood glue in my next batch to see if I like it better than white glue. I don't really like the smell of glue so I usually ad a drop or two of peppermint oil to my batches and love the way it makes the clay smell. I've also substituted almond oil for baby oil because it's a natural product and baby oil is a petroleum product. So far, so good.

    Hi I've watched you since you made a face for the garden! Sadly mine came out much more comedy then detailed like yours! I'm wondering if I HAVE to bake or as you said you were in a hurry so you baked it. My pieces are larger. I mosaics on my molds that I've made.

      @UltimatePaperMache  8 місяців тому +2

      If you're using the original paper mache clay recipe, there's no need to bake it. It will get just as hard just drying on the counter, although it's a good idea to turn a fan on it to help it dry faster. You can't put it in the garden, though.

      I hope it works with the joint compound you have available - there's so many different formulas, that it's hard to make a recipe that works for everyone. I'm going to test the Wurst brand with the Gorilla wood glue this weekend, to see if it will work, too.

      @morganheyo 8 місяців тому

      @@UltimatePaperMache Ohh I think that would be entertaining to watch. Also, the sculpture I made has hardened on the outside but is still squishy inside and is starting to smell like flour going bad. Did I maybe add too much?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  8 місяців тому +1

      @@morganheyo It does sound like you may have applied it too thick. The smell may be yeast that is feeding on the mixture. Try putting it in front of a fan - or if it's small enough and there's nothing that could melt on your sculpture, stick it in the oven at 250F until it's hard all the way through.

      @@UltimatePaperMache Well I have a wooden base so do you think that would hold up in the oven? And for how long?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  8 місяців тому +1

      @@morganheyo I have never put wood in the oven, but if you keep it at 250F or below, I don't think it will burn. But I'm obviously not an expert and don't really know. If you're worried about it, use a fan, instead. It will dry out almost as fast with a fan.
