    Loved the video AJ, curious though, why leave out the part about their creation by Ogremoch and the other elemental evils of earth as established in 5th ed? I thought the idea of them as artificial creations used by the forces of earth to harass the good aligned races of the plane of air was quite evocative. Cut for time or is there some criticism of the lore? Honestly intrigued, loved the video as always.

      Good Question! Cut for time, I thought it much better to talk about that when I get to the plane of Air :) Also I have not talked about the Elemental Evils yet, so it would be confusing to mention one of them here.

    I always see it that winged creatures are angels for varying pantheons. For example, Sphinxes are the angels for the Egyptian gods. Pegasi are the angels for the greek gods, and the norse gods. Couatl are the angels for the mayan gods. So I like to think of gargoyles as fallen angels of Grumsh.

    I use these monsters for storytelling, their origin is "yes" to all. I even had Gargoyles of different origins fight each other during one battle the players walked into. They picked a side, the gargoyles were great teammates, until the opposing force was defeated and their gargoyle team turned on them. That was PC decision folly #2. The role-play puzzle best solution was to wait until one team eliminated the other and fight that. It was a party of 6, only one player wanted that and he was playing a Pan paladin (Loom of Magus, paladin kit alternative, homebrew, Paladin of Pan were defenders of partyers and generally good people, usually lecherous drunkards. They had spell singing and seduction, alternative ethos, alternative item restrictions, and no cumbersome armor allowed). The Pan Paladin was considered a joke, despite his effectiveness and great decisions, because he believed in the "party god." Pan Paladins were really awesome. He did not have the strengths needed to fight gargoyles, even help as more than relatively bard-like bolstering. He was the only player to vote the best outcome. Let the gargoyles fight it out, let their origins fight. Nope, the party chose the Earth Elemental Alchemist side and fought the Demonic Spirit and avatar side. To be fair, if they waited out the fight, they would have fought the Demonic Spirit side. I rolled all the wait-out situations before the game happened, many fights. More than I should have for sh^ts and giggles. One of twenty went to Earth Elemental Alchemist side despite them being relatively evenly matched. I digress. If you see Gargoyles fight each other, remember they are all evil and wait it out. Fight the survivors.

    The one thing I always remembered about Gargoyles was that they feign eating the flesh of their victims as a fear tactic, as they don't need food to survive the act is done to terrify their opponents. My perfect encounter always involved an open area affected by some type of miasma, with 4-5 gargoyles perched around the outside. Players need to make it out of the area before they are overtaken by the poisons as well as the flyby attacks.

    You know, I never understood why gargoyles were Chaotic Evil... and that's probably thanks to Disney's Gargoyles. But in hindsight it makes sense. They perch on top of a castle not because it likes the view or because it's getting nutrients from the stone or whatever... they perch there because that castle is probably known for being the epicenter of many battles and waits patiently for the next so they can slaughter as many soldiers as they can. The soldiers of the castle from past battles probably have noticed the "statues" coming to life and "fighting on their side." So it has become a misconception that gargoyles are protectors when in actuality they don't care who's side you're on, you're just as much a target for their slaughter as the enemy soldier you're fighting.

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos 5 років тому +2

      Historically, Gargoyles and Grotesques were created as protectors, supposed to keep evil spirits out of the buildings they were attached to. They were also used architecturally to protect structures by being channels for moving water away from the sides to prevent errosion and other water damage (A true gargoyle is based around a water spout, a grotesque is not).
      For the D&D gargoyle, the one I most remember is from DDO, where he's a random encounter in the second major outdoor exploration area you get to. Gargoyles in Ebberon aren't Chaotic Evil if I remember right, and are more of a Neutral species that both like a good fight and like to watch things, so them showing up tends to point towards trouble because a major fight is about to happen (like they decided you'd be a good fight...) and the others might be sitting somewhere for decades or even centuries and only react because you or someone there managed to interest them enough to get involved (Or you might have been using it for cover and it got hit...)

When you hit it with a metal weapon, you have to pass a strength check to be able to pull your weapon away from the gargoyle. Stat wise, I don’t figure it will have any higher stats than your run of the mill gargoyle, just an added effect.

    Fun fact. Gargoyle is the root of the word Gargle, as is gargling water. The reason for this is because what we typically think of as gargoyles are actual called Grotesque or Chimeras. The gargoyle was just a spout for draining water from castle roofs. Just a spout though isn’t very aesthetically appealing, so they’d make Grotesques around them (think those Eagle mouthed spouts in Disney’s version of the Hunchback) and thus common nomenclature caused us all to be calling the statues Gargoyles.

    The mention of the "golem" version being infused with a fear spell really has me fascinated. I think a good way to iterate upon them in future versions would be to lean into them causing supernatural fear. Afterall that is sort of the purpose of gargoyles and grotesques in architecture - they're supposed to be "scary" in order to ward off things, usually evil things but still.
    I do have to agree with some other commenters in that they really should be "lawfuL" or "good" creatures, because their historic purpose was to keep evil away. They were also to an extent meant to represent a separation of the mundane from the divine - hence part of their placement up in high areas. A good idea for them could be to inhabit ruins of former religious significance; as they like "religious" areas.
    With the idea of loving "sacred" ruins, I'd also like to see their physiology be somewhat consciously morphic, able to adapt to blend into the ruins from different pantheons they might inhabit.

    Can anyone help me out to find out what this creature's name is? I've searched on Google but no results could help. I believe it was a panther-like monster that has the ability to peel back its skin on its head, revealing a muscle covered head, possibly as a scare tactic. It has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks now.

    related in a rock sense just wanted to bounce an idea that had been rattling around in the old noggin off you. What do you think of a BBEG that is an apprentice wizard who is using a petrified elder brain as a sort of fetish to enact a ritual that is dominating a vast swath of people. So he's chipping bits off, and because an elder brain is extra dimensional as he chips stone bits off it creates lovecraftian architecture as the parts of the elder brain in the extra dimensional space try to repopulate the lost stony gray matter. He's chipping off pieces to make pseudo magical amulets that make able to dominate anyone wearing a medallion made out of these chipped pieces. Basically he's using the broken pieces to make the elder brain work the way it does if it wasn't petrified. I was toying with the ideas that he makes other enslaved apprentice wizard burn spell slots massaging the stoned elder brain to make the effect work. I dunno I wanted to do a 1 to 10 adventure for it but since a couple groups fell through I lost confidence in it being a good idea. His grand scheme was to melt down magic items to create a pool of latent magic to make one of them crowns of ultimate wizardry. Because what does an apprentice want besides being a grand magic user immediately.

    • @AJPickett

    Adamantium does auto critical hits?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  5 років тому +2

      Adamantine is an ultrahard metal found in meteorites and extraordinary mineral veins. In addition to being used to craft adamantine armor, the metal is also used for weapons.
      Melee weapons and ammunition made of or coated with adamantine are unusually effective when used to break objects. Whenever an adamantine weapon or piece of ammunition hits an object, the hit is a critical hit.
      The adamantine version of a melee weapon or of ten pieces of ammunition costs 500 gp more than the normal version, whether the weapon or ammunition is made of the metal or coated with it. So, they auto score critical hits against objects, and it is pretty easy to argue that an elemental made entirely of stone, animate or not, is still an object.
