Take heed, UA-camrs looking to learn how to install these things (which are really great, BTW): There is literally *not one single piece* of the roof part of this job that is done even remotely correctly. Velux specifies a silicone sealant, they used polyurethane. Velux specifies metal roofing fasteners with rubber washers for all exposed penetrations, they used normal sheet metal screws. Velux specifies double-stick tape around the boot, they used nothing under the boot. Velux specifies cutting the standing seam from two inches below the lower side up to the top edge of the boot, to prevent ponding, they stuck it up tight. Velux specifies additional metal flashing added to protect boot after installation, none here. And on and on and on. For crying out loud, they not only cut the hole without safety glasses, but then smeared the gooped-on NP-1 over freshly-cut jagged metal without so much as a glove on. Look elsewhere for wisdom.
Velux has always been a very innovative skylight and roof products company. These new sun tunnel setups are no different. What a great way to get natural light into an area that would otherwise have to remain dark or dull with very limited light.
I ended up on here whilst seeking information on the proper way to install a Velux solar tube on a pre-existing metal roof. What I found was 30 or so “experts” slamming the poster for faulty workmanship, but not one of them so much as offered a better solution or the correct way. UA-cam, the new Facebook!
What is the slope of that roof? 8/12 or 9/12? I wouldn't want to be on that roof even with the rope and harness. Also curious what the rope was attached to?
What a mess! The guy butchered a nice steel roof, and created a guaranteed future leak. No amount of caulking will last long, whereas proper double overlapped steel roof layers will last the life of the roof. As for the external finish-appalling!
Hi Kastnmagic You can install a VELUX Sun Tunnel prior to a new metal roof going on. I feel its actually better if you have the option. This certified installer is simply adding a VELUX Sun Tunnel to an existing metal roof and showing how easy it can be for those who might be considering adding some daylight to their home.
@michaelc3693 2 years ago i was only thinking that the 70 year roof will now last only as long as that spooged-on caulking will stick... it won't be 70 years!
$700 ? Lets see,....here we go...3684 kwh. @ 19c per KWH That a 10 yr payoff if on only 12 hr a night....NOW its free theoretically. Depends on lots of factors and especially how many hours you average length of night is. But you get the idea
Genial!
NP1 should have went all the way around the bottom and covered the upper top half of the flashing. It then being out of the sun, sight and weather. Cutting the roof was not the way to get things done at the bottom of the flashing.
i think a little more care should have been taken on that roof. the metal shards had to have scratched that roof...and there are way better tools to cut with than a sawsall!
We can put a man on the moon, but we can't make a chaulking/sealant that can withstand the florida sun? Everything i've tried has only lasted a few years at most.
If I owned skylight solutions I would just be milking the public of every last dollar just like all the rest of these greedy buisiness owners today and then blaming supply chain issues or supply and demand or whatever for this crazy greedy inflation. But I don"t own it. And I would at least pull this video off so more poor homeowners don't ruin their roof.
omg! that looks terrible! I'm trying to replace two skylights on a metal roof that have started to crack and they weren't flashed correctly. Surely there is a better way than this gooping chaulk over a giant hole in the metal roof panels.
+William Clark So right.Lack of professional roofing skills my opinion.Glad it`s not mine.Caulking is the easy way out sending a bill. It`s only a temporary fix.Somebody will fix it a year or couple when it`s maybe leaking inside, but world need`s more job`s so that`s the good thing here skylight solution`s,THANKS for helping society rolling..
This is a junk installation. That skylight comes in a curb mounted model which needs to be used. The metal must be removed and two pieced around the curb or..........keep the caulk gun and rope handy

Agree. I'm still looking for a way to "do it right".
Sure are a lot of experts in here.
The music must be to cover up the camera guy's laughter as the installer "smoothed the NP1".
Good god.
I been roofing 30 yrs always caulk boots then slide in
Unrelated, but this reminded me I needed to jigsaw the floor in a room I was working on.
Caulk is Not a good substitute for good roofing techniques.
(One of Gary's Rules of Roofing!)
You ruined that roof. I hope the home owners know how to contact you when they need to be compensated for the huge water leaks.
How not to do it 😒

Skylight base should be center with the rib panel instead of putting it against the rib,it will trap water and will rust metal panel
qmax1969 u can’t always do that due to the rafters

Almost forgot how's water going to get around the standing seam with the tube tight against the seams on both sides. PONDING

nice video ...step by step ...do a lot of people get those installed retro or is that mainly a new construction item ?
Sorry for the late response. The tube installed in the video is a 14" Velux Sun Tunnel and it is $699 +tax installed.

This does not produce light at night. It is a skylight dome that goes off when the sun goes down.
Actually the moon adds light to my closet at night. It's not much but enough to walk by compared to no sun tunnel.
I also want to know how much it would cost to do one of these approx.
all that for one lamp?
what is approximate cost for item plus installation (just like the one shown)?
in a few years you have a water damage in your roof. The Glue stuff lasts not forever
i think..
Good Zil Hunting its NP1 designed for metal roofs

Destroyed not only the look of the roof but it destroyed the roof in general!
Caulking is not a cure all. Where's the sealant underneath. Surface caulking is useless!
We can put a man on the moon, but we can't make a chaulking/sealant that can withstand the florida sun? Everything i've tried has only lasted a few years at most.
Интересно,конденсат куда деется?
I don't think it would be out of line for someone to murder their roofer if he did this...
As a roofer that shit is 100% going to leak

OMG... oh ho ho mi gawd...
just "don't" do what is shown here...
Reminded me of some old Benny Hill routines...
I did not care for the boot flashing work. I hate when I see people use chaulking for a cure all.

Bob, mostly retrofit
Yikes! THAT'S how they waterproof the roof?!
Pretty sure the directions say don't put those Sun tubes on a metal roof
Hack.. it still leaks to this day
Don't like the black on the white roof
Well you sure screwd that roof up!! You don't have a clue!!
