      Miriam Havard
      I hated to see her leave the show. In the U.S. if a character leaves after 3 seasons we usually assume they were “informed they would be leaving the show”.
      I found out from a British friend when I was watching “MI-5” (SPOOKS) that doing only 3 seasons of a show isn’t so unusual. Standard contracts are for 3 years. Many decide to use their option to move on.
      That was brought home sadly when we lost Matthew that same season because Dan Stevens wanted out.
      I looked in IMDb and saw Jessica Brown Findlay has done amazing things since poor sweet Sybil died.
      Dan Stevens has worked nonstop also.
      It’s a tribute to them, and Julian Fellowes that for 3 more years we still felt their impact.

      Education, probably. Those in wealthier families could afford to keep their children in school, though it still was uncommon for girls to do so at this time. I’m proud of our strong ladies in that era.

      That was true around the world. Most of the early Indian independence movement were people from educated wealthy families, including Gandhiji. Only they could afford to stay in the movement while continuing to feed their families. Also only they could read out about English atrocities and be exposed to freedom and equality movements from around the world. One of the biggest contributions of Gandhiji was that he took the movement to the masses and uneducated.

    Tom and Sybil were my favorite couple on the show period. The fact that such important matters as their social class difference and political views didn't pull them apart only shows how much they truly loved each other. I don't think any other couple would have survived such huge differences. I really really loved Matthew and Mary together but even with everyone in their families rooting for them and their social classes being the same and almost everything being convenient they still took way too long to finally decide to be together. Sybil and Tom fought against all odds, their social class, both their families' dissaproval (not to mention Robert trying to give Tom money to leave Sybil), their different lifestyles, Tom's rebelious causes and still they loved each other more and more by the day and always showed it. Tom breaking down when Sybil was lost in Ireland and his relief when he saw her return to the house, how she stuck up for him afterwards saying they had decided this together when she had every right to be upset, to mention only one example. I accept that Tom had some strong opinions but he loved Sybil enormously and his character development was great. He and Sybil are my favorite characters in the show and after her death seeing more of him and as a father was really great, it was sad Sybil wasn't around to see how amazing he was with their daughter and how he bonded with the rest of the family.

    Something that always bothered me, is that they had an Irish character in Downton. But they never really addressed how horrible the English was to the Irish. I mean they brought it up now and then. But they skirt around what happened and it never really shows how badly the upper class were to or call them out.

    • @breadgirl9806
      @breadgirl9806 Рік тому +17

      The way the English upper class treated the Irish during the Potato Famine was honestly evil and unforgivable. I am saying that from the perspective of a black American.
      The English took over Ireland and then refused to even treat them as citizens and watched a million Irish people starve to death.
      Everyone treats Tom like an irrational radicle when his own grandparents would have faced incredible hardship due to the indifference of the British upper class. He had every reason to question the system that oppressed and neglected his people.

    This might be an unpopular opinion but I think that last bit proves that Sybil and Branson weren’t the best match. He hated where she came from and never gave the life she led a chance until she was gone. He grew so much as a character after she died, pitty he couldn’t have seen that growth when she was alive. They would have been a happier and better suited couple.

      As someone who is familiar with the Irish language, I had the unexpected chance of befriending a former Irish citizen, now in and out of hospital, whose father was part of the 1916 Easter Rising. Luckily for her, she did learn Gaedhilge in school, as it was known before spelling reforms in 1948 when the language became more standardized. Unfortunately, she lost a lot of it when she moved to the states, by I found that I could converse with her in Gaeilge and be understood.

    I sympathize over the horrible situation in Ireland, but it didn't give Tom the right to act so selfishly in regards to Sybil. He knew all along the risk he would putting her in and he still did it. He could have pursued his beliefs on his own instead taking advantage of her youth and naivete and pushing her into all of it. His character's early storyline really wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He became a bit more selfless later on, though at the expense of seemingly losing his convictions over Irish independence, which always struck me as him accepting defeat without much reason to.
