UPDATE - well it only took SIX Weeks for my replacement to arrive. I made an 8am appointment and it was done by 9:30am. It looks the same, BUT I hope they fixed the issue. The new unit comes with a one year warranty. But my old one was 5 years old before this all started.
It is essential that the digitizer was replaced as a minimum. It’s possible they replaced the lcd as well as a unit, but not essential. Even bad connections at the ribbon cable can be trouble. The hope is the new bits are better made. I can say at least 5 other car companies have various touch screen issues and some will go back to radio with dials next year or possibly the one after so we don’t have to take our eyes off the road. M
I had this issue for two years and you have no idea how many times this radio has almost killed me in the road for messing up my navigation to go places. Please drive safely
Thanks for posting this video. I just got back from my dealer and they did not mention the new extended warranty, as he told me it ENDED in May 2023. I'll be calling Subaru of America next. Thanks again!
My Outback started doing this a few weeks ago, I thought it was the heat in Florida. Thank you for posting, I have never used any cleaner on the screen.
Good Luck, I hope your Subaru dealer helps you. I seems most Subaru dealers know about this problem and the others pretend like they don't - Thank you for the comment!
Just noticed this on our 2019 Subaru. We havent yet specifically seen the dots but I'm going to go look for them now. Radio stations are changing on us by themselves. Thank you for your video so I can continue the investigation and call our dealer!
YES, those freakin dots did that to us also, changed the channels all over, like ghost. Just when a good song started play, it would change stations... This has happened to SO MANY PEOPLE, just read the comments.
Thanks! Mine has been doing this on&off for about 3 months steadily getting worse. I knew it had to do with the touch service and I thought maybe I cleaned it with the "wrong thing", so have cleaned it numerous times with tv\screen cleaner which Sometimes helps. Briefly. So finally decided to Google " 2018 Subaru outback stereo replacement" and I stumbled on this video thru that. But so glad I just saw this. The car has under the 64,000 (54,500) miles, so is it warrantied still ?
Thank you for the $2 - You will have to talk to your dealer AND some are alot better than others. DO NOT tell them that use EVER used screen cleaner on it, some will say that caused and you're out of luck - Good Luck to you. OH, my Subaru was still under it's 5yr warrenty, so it got replaced with no problems.
Going to take my 2019 outback to the dealer in the coming days, but when I mentioned the issue, the service rep sounded shocked when I detailed how my screen was "possessed." rep mentioned it could cost as much as $250 just for them to look at it to "run a diagnostic." I'm just going to record a phone video of it and show them that as my proof. warranty-wise, rep was very vague as to what on my 19 is covered still, which makes me wonder if they're really motivated to help me.
GOOD LUCK, I am sure ALL Subaru dealers are fully aware of this issue, but 'ACT' like they don't and try to get out of the replacement. NEVER tell you that you ever used any screen cleaner, that is one way they try to blame YOU, they know that the units are defective and have replaced tons of them already... I wasn't charge a dime for a diagnostic, all they need to do it to LOOK at the screen. THEY KNOW!!! Good luck man!!!
@@StevesRealWorldafter a lengthy back & forth with Subaru corporate, they talked to my dealership and the dealer agreed to cover the cost to replace the unit. however, Subaru corp person told me I'd be responsible for payment of the labor portion of the service. I'm hoping the labor won't be an outrageous price
@@jzadotcom2476 How many miles are on your vehicle? S.O.A. is claiming that since I'm out of warranty (105k on my '18 outback) that they are only responsible for 2/3 the cost. That leaves me with an $850+ bill to replace the unit. My head unit was ALREADY replaced once at 16k miles- and the replacement is clearly defective. Its really upsetting that they won't stand behind it. Im looking for any help i can get to help convince S.O.A. that they should bear the full responsibility.
@@jeremiebrillant2177 My mileage is currently around 48,700 and I've been out of warranty for at least 18 months, according to my dealer. I'd prefer to not have to pay for the labor costs since it seems like this is happening to a lot of other owners (yet it's still not a recall)
@@jzadotcom2476 So, one of the Defenses that SOA used was that they sent letters out to the owners of the vehicles stating that the result of the class action lawsuit was that they extended the warranty of the infotainment/head units to 5yr/100k miles. (You may want to investigate that, since your'e well under that) I didn't remember getting one of these letters and i moved addresses 2x within the time period. In any case, i just got off the phone with a dealer in Irvine, CA. that claims that they can replace the head units with 'refurbished' ones at a substantial saving to the customer. I'll keep you posted on how that goes.
My 2018 legacy just started ghosting 11/01/23. I took my unit apart today and it is sun degradation and common screen press points. This is not a safety issue so doubt Subaru will fix the problem on the low-end head unit and that is what I have. Thanks for posting your find.
You should check with them, some Subaru dealers are ALOT better than others about fixing this. Some blame YOU, they know it's not your fault, Never tell them you ever used any screen cleaner, that is one way they try to put the blame on the user. They know this is not caused by screen cleaners - Good Luck
i have the same issue. I'm still waiting for my replacement. its been 4 months and they just told me that they still have no ETA on the new unit. so frustrating!
So sorry, Subaru knows these are defective and should replace these. Our local Subaru said they had to replace a bunch of these before. They know wha'ts up - Good Luck.
Me too. My dealer actually wants me to pay $200 to update the software, claiming it will fix the ghost touching. I said I’d update it myself and they said that might not work. They were right, the WiFi software updates are broken 😡
In Australia I’ve had the same issue. I was quoted $11,000 AUD by our local Subaru Dealer. They recommended we get a third party fix. I’ll never own another Subaru.
The issue is due to delamination of the screen and there are a ton of radio's on backorder. People are waiting months for a radio to be available. Part of the issue with availability is that the replacement radio is a reman exchange unit. Radio's are not being sent back to the reman facility within a decent amount of time to refurbish them to be sold again so the backorder gets longer and longer especially with the demand of so many radio's going bad.
If Subaru had any integrity they would issue a lifetime warranty and start to manufacture the unit again, after fixing the design issues. But they won’t do that until they’re sued again.
My original started having the issue 2.5 years in and was replaced under original warranty. The replacement is now going bad the same way again. I definitely think this is a manufactured flaw that they should have to own up to and pay for. There are settings that you need to be able to access touch screen to change so it is a big deal that the touch screen becomes unusable.
@@paulakitchens1543 Yes it happens to the Legacy also. If you dont want to wait 2 - 3 months for a replacement then ask your local dealer if they can send yours out for repair. You would get it back within a week or 2
I ended up deciding to just swap it out for an idoing unit. Costing nearly $700 but I'm not waiting forever to get a stock unit I'd likely replace anyways.
The $700 is much cheaper than the $2000 that Subaru charges at some places and probably a better unit. I did post in the comments that we only had to wait 4-5 weeks four our free replacement. BUT I still have concerns on the quality, just look at all of these comments... Thank you for the comment!
I work at a plant that laminates glass & polycarb, I immediately recognized this as delamination. (2019 legacy) I’m going to talk to my engineering head about options. Mine is really bad & im thinking about trying to peel off the front coating.
I have a 2016 legacy and the issues started happening a year ago. I swept it under the carpet and it's bad now where I can't even listen to bluetooth and random calls. I finally told the dealer the issues and they said known issue and it would be 1800 to replace at the start of my visit where I declined. At the end of my visit, I was told they would look into getting the radio for free but I would have to pay for the labor which is 500. Im unsure which path to take since my car is 8 years old now but technically a second car which i don't drive as much. these days.
Maybe check how much a replacement cost from a car audio store, Or that $500 might be an OK deal if you are keep this car for a few more years? Good Luck.
Mine is 2018 Outback and it is doing this now. I was told I'll have to pay out of pocket. I never received any information about this issue. I feel they should be paying for the replacement.
True, Subaru issued service bulletins on this issue, but decided not to do a re-call. It seems Sunaru wants $2K for the replacement. If mine wasn't still under warranty I would but a third part replacement for 1/4 the price. Thank you for the comment!
I was vert happy with my subary outback 2018 I got year and a half ago. its a salvage title though so I wont probably have a warranty. I wonder if there is a DYI where you can replace the touch screen layer of the screen behind the glass. at least thats what it seems like the issue is. replacing the whole radio sounds like an overkill. mabye the problem is bigger and deeper I dont know for sure.
If ours wasn't still under warranty, I would've bought a replacement from "Car Toy" or other car audio place. Much cheaper than the $2,000 that some dealers say these cost.
0:26 My 2019 Subaru Outback started doing this after 4 years of ownership. They said it was "moisture" underneath the radio. I know better than to spray it directly when cleaning. I live in MD. I spoke with an operator at Subaru Advocacy but they did not return my call. I'm currently await a $1500 replacement radio/navigation system.
I've heard a few different causes from Subaru, no matter what they used a defective or prone to failure radio. Ours was replaced for free, did you have to pay anything? Good luck!
I've been turning the radio off and using the dial to choose a radio station OR connect my phone through bluetooth and then turn the radio off. If you turn the volume up or down it will still play while the screen is off. Bad thing is if I get a new phone I won't be able to connect it through bluetooth as now the touch screen is completely haywire and has a mind of its own trying to change everything. It even tried to delete my phone from the bluetooth lol
just started having this issue one month ago, my warranty was expiring the following week from today, i took it in today and they said it would be covered thankfully, not sure how long until a new head unit comes in yet though. Kind of upset as it’s the first issue i’ve had on my sti, i also drive a 2016 tsi and i’ve had no issues on the apple car play screen
SO nice they would cover it, not everyone with this issue is getting the help they need from their Subaru Dealer, I posted in the comments, I think it only took 6 weeks for my replacement to arrive and 90 minutes to install - Thank you for the comment!
I have 66k miles on my 2019 and I have an extended warranty that I believe expired in Oct 2023. I have over 30 of those spots. I don't see the link for the class action.
Call your local Subaru dealer, mine replaced ours for free (I also had the extended warranty). There are links in the comments I believe, but basically Subaru extended the date for replacements until June of 2023 or something like that. Good Luck. It only took 4-5 weeks for our replacement to arrive and be installed.
Mine just started doing it, except im getting lines at the top of the screen. Odd. My dealer told me hes done a couple and its a partially known issue but my warranty expired last year. So messed up.
You dealer knows it's more than a partially known issue, Subaru issued a bulletin about this issue in the past. It seems many dealers tried to get out of replacing these units. We were lucky we had an extended warranty to get ours replaced! Good Luck.
Yes - it's in the comments, I think it's closed up and Subaru did a little extension but now, I think it's expired. BUT talk to your local Subaru dealer and see if they can help or if they just play dump like some dealers or blame you for using a cleaner - good luck
Me too. I bought my 2019 Outback a year ago with no screen issues. During the summer is when the bubbles appeared and multiplied. The dealer sounded surprised like they never heard of this before and told me that the 2019 is not included in the lawsuit.
I saw the dots a few weeks ago that are mentioned in the video. Now the unit is changing channels and zipping between map function and radio. Completely useless. My warranty has expired and trying to find more info on the class action suit. I will take to the dealer next week but am not optimistic.
Yes, good luck, I think the replacement window closed last Summer, I don't know why there wasn't a full recall on these, just look at how many other people had this same problem, Good Luck.
I have around 15-17 dots in the top right and it presses the Bluetooth button and tries to pair another device (disconnecting my current phone). The heat seems to make it worse so I have a towel in my car to put over the radio while I’m at work/home. Then I take it off once paired with my phone and click the messages button as fast as I can so it has a prompt on the screen to connect messages and the “ghost” can’t hit any buttons because the prompt is too low for it.
Yes, I found the heat did effect this, we are in WA state, so it's only really hot 2 months a year. The heat made more and more dots, making the unit so bad, I could touch anyplace on the screen and get anything to work. Most of these are now out of warranty but I would see what your local Subaru can do for you. Probably want to charge you $2k for a new unit. good luck.
Ugh i just bought my 2018 last year and the "ghost dots" just shouwed up and have gotten progressively worse - and because it was a used car there was only a 30 day warranty which if course the screen was unhaunted at that point 😢
Darn, this seems more and more common in the 2018 and 2019 Subaru's . Mine is a 2018. Started with one dot and then multiplied like bunnies. Subaru charges an average $2000 to replace, so it's cheaper to go to a car audio store for a replacement like Car Toys, (That's a NorthWest store) Good Luck
I'm having the same issues and they refuse to correct this manufacturing defect! I may end up buying an aftermarket which If I do Subaru will NEVER make another dollar servicing this vehicle again.
So so many people are in the same boat. If mine wasn't still under warranty I would also buy a third party unit, the 2K Subaru wants it ridiculous for these. Thank you for the comment!
Now I am feeling sick. I just bought a 2018 back in May, I am sitting in a parking lot now with it running, someone called and i couldn’t get the sound to turn down OR it off for the longest. Now its lit up and appears on but giving me the hardest time
I am having this issue on my 2019 Outback. Unfortunately I do a ton of driving and have already exceeded 200k miles, so no warranty for me. The same for my parasitic battery drain issue. This is a dam good car, but after experiencing all these electrical gremlins and seeing these issues are still a problem on today's models, will keep me away from the brand on my next purchase. Thanks for the video.
That's the same year as our Outback, we all got these BAD head units/radios. Don't know if your Subaru will help you or not?? Good Luck - Thank you for the comment!
2019 with extended warranty less than 60k miles it started doing this like two weeks ago. It stopped for a week and started again today. I have 20 to 30 dots. Never used liquid on the screen. Even after adjusting with the steering wheel buttons it still changes. Using the GPS a week ago it kept repeating itself. I wonder if the moisture could have come from the engine?
I would call your Subaru dealer tomorrow and talk to them.. I had an extended warranty on my 89 and I just made the cut off when this happened to me. Good luck.
@@chrisna9861 something like 6 year, 100000 miles. I made them give me friends and family pricing on the warranty, 1/2 price so $1100. I got one of their loaner cars in 2019 with super low miles.
I have the 10 year/100K miles warranty on my 2018, and when I called my dealer, they said this warranty doesn't cover the radio and that my radio's warranty expired in 2023 (which was the 'courtesy' warranty extension that only covered the radio).
Have a 2019 Subaru Outback with this problem. I will not buy another Subaru because of how Subaru treats customers over this. Should be replaced regardless of warranty. I am sure there are many more like me that will never buy another Subaru do to this issue alone.
Really. It’s that bad huh… idoing it may change your perseption on your Subaru experience. It’s a good car with tons of modifications on the market. And your complaining about the stock radio failing. It is a 2019 and it shouldn’t fail but every stock radio fails, and sucks, just get a idoing for 429 bucks, plug and play and starlink bypass, My Subaru I ripped the radio out for weight savings and make 400 hp, I’d rather hear the sweet rumble of a Subaru
None on our '19 Sport, but my sister's Legacy started gong crazy last week. I'm wondering if covering the screen with opaque carboard will help, but she's already been to her dealer, she has a 8 year extended warranty as do we. She has 8,500 miles on hers as she lives in a town and doesn't drive much, we have 14,000 on ours because we have several cars. They told her it was a $5K replacement without warranty, I hope she misunderstood. Our car sits on a covered carport with a car cover on it when not in use, her's sits in her driveway. We do have the large screen. If not for the warranty, I'd look at Crutchfield's offerings. My old '77 Ford looks better every day. All my Fords are looking better actually. We've had a Subaru since 1985,, that may end.
Did the warranty cover it? Most dealers say it's $2000 to replace, so they are definitely exaggerating a bit there. Our warranty did cover our replacement. Otherwise, I would buy a different brand some "Car Toys" or similar for much cheaper
My sister was told that warranty did / will cover it. I still can't believe the $5K .... but she says it's what the lady service person told her, ... Crazy. I did find much cheaper alternatives at Crutchfield "just in case" needed. @@StevesRealWorld
My old mans massive sneezing 🤧 fits 2-3x @week, while driving & refusing to cover his face, doesn't work for cleaning screen either... (Much to the annoyance/disgust of my mother..Or anyone else in vehicle)
No, it's a goner, Look at all of these other people in the comments, The extended warranty period to replace these ended last Summer as far as I know. Thank you for your comment!
Regarding replacement, Subaru stopped having this unit manufactured after the 2019 model year so any "new" OEM replacement would likely be at least 4 years old already.
We are in Eastern WA, and ours was replaced for free. The last comment the dealer told the person $5000 to replacement, Many dealers are say $2000. Good Luck.
My 2018 Outback just started doing the phantom button push thing.... stereo goes NUTS. Dealership is of no help. Subaru Canada is giving me the standard company line "When an amended and extended warranty period is offered, and expires, we have no ability to do anything else to support you"..... I laughed and asked her who's policy that was - she said "Subaru's policy".... which I pointed out was convenient. If its Subaru's policy, just change it. This recall issue was because they knew they had problems. The extended period was because they knew they had problems. The problems are STILL happening with cars. Has anyone had any luck in Canada with pushing a claim through after the extended warranty period has passed? Its BS that they are trying to push that problem to the consumer now.
Yes, this is 100% unfair, Subaru knows these are back and should have done the right thing and did a recall on these units. I had an extended warranty or else I would get a different brand replacement for much less - good luck!
Have 2015 Outback. I called it telegraphing. Started 2017 changing stations. Went in 4 x. Did software update and it stopped for period of time. 2024 went in as it was out of control. Told me out of warranty and it was warped probably due to cleaning it. I saw prints years ago and didn’t register it might be a problem and what they called warped had been there since 2017. Wanted $2000 to replace. I don’t have $2000! I decided to try factory reset myself. Found a list that had box checked next to “beep”. Unchecked it and 3 months no problems. Also decided since no cooperation from Subaru I would get it replaced by audio business. So far not necessary. Find list and beep option. Uncheck it and see if it works for you. So disappointed in Subaru. This is our 4th Outback. Subaru will not be my next car.
I started noticing these "bubbles" July 2023 on my Legacy 2018 which I bought in November 2017. Symptoms: radio stations changing all by itself. When using maps, it zooms in and out. Once this starts happening, touch screen becomes unresponsive. Seems to happens after I've been driving the car for 30 minutes or so. I'm considering getting a different head unit, since I've heard that replacing with the OEM, it can happen again. Does anyone have any suggestion for an alternative head unit?
Yes and Subaru charges $1200 - $2000.. Next time I will go to our local Car Toys dealer and get a different brand replacement - look at the comments - this is so super common! Thank you for your comment!
Mine just did this over the past two weeks ita gotten so bad calling the dealership tomorrow on top of the dcm module they still haven't came up with a fix for
WHAT? That's the new (2023) that I've heard from anyone and there are alot of comments on this video. At least I assume that is stiil on warranty? Good Luck.
@@StevesRealWorld they said it wasn’t under warranty so I gotta fork up 1k. I’ll do that after deployment so before I leave Imma try a heat gun to see if it works. If it doesn’t then just replace it since it’s annoying anyway.
You need a new radio. The glass is actually pulling away from the unit itself. Just had my radio replaced. It literally took 5 months for the radio to come in since they no longer mass produce it. I purchased the extended warranty which covered it. It will cost you around 2500 to have the unit replaced at the dealership. Subaru shouldn't be charging, seeing that this is a common issue with this radio.
A workaround I discovered (yes I have the delamination bubbles baad) that at least keeps my radio station on - start car, select my favorite radio station and immediately press the House (home) button to get the apps screen instead of the radio screen. Now the radio will at least keep playing while the screen goes full on berserk, and Bluetooth will connect too. Caveat for me is my touch screen won’t freak out for the first 5 or 10 minutes I drive from cold start, so I do have a chance to set this up.
@@StevesRealWorld Fortunately, SOA handled it at no cost. I've got the new radio installed today. It comes with 12mo warranty but I don't know how to prevent the delamination. How about yours?
My wives 18 had the same issues. Contacted Subaru of america and they want me to take it to the dealership (over an hour away) and have them diagnose the problem. I told them its a known issue and i will just buy an aftermarket head unit and fix their problem myself.
Our local Subaru deal said, they had to "Diagnose" the problem also. I said the same, we all know what the problem is, there's even been Subaru Service Bulletins on this issue. If mine wasn't still under a warranty I would go to our local Car Toys and get a 3rd party one cheaper than Subaru charges. Good Luck!
I also have a 2019 Outback 3.6, same problem. A dozen or so fingerprints on the glass and I can't use radio, maps etc without it freezing and scanning. My car is out of warranty. Called Subaru and dealer. We'll see!
I’ve had a loaner since last Saturday. They said they had the replacement Wednesday. It’s sketchy. I’ve never ever had issues with my Subarus. I feel like my 2020 wrx has a covid curse. First the AC went around 9,000 miles, then a tire slashed at 10,000, now the touch screen at 15,000 miles. So crazy!! I said the same thing “my Radio is possessed!”

My 2018 outback just started doing this. Mine doesn’t have the bubbles, yet. The home button in the top left starts flashing. It makes the touchscreen unusable. I’m out of warranty because I’m at 110k. The dealer wants me to pay $200 to update the software, claiming this will fix it. I can’t update the software myself because guess what… that functionality is also broken. This is completely unacceptable for a 6yo vehicle. I’ll never buy another Subaru.
I have not had anyone say the update had fixed their problems sadly, Of course it's worth a try. The unit is not made by Subaru, but they should have issued a full recall of these, they know it was a problem for sure - Thank you for the comment.
Same thing on my 2018 SUBARU. They blamed me (and the dealer was very rude) for using cleaning fluid, which I never used. I used only a dry microfiber cloth the clear off dust once a month. They delayed and delayed until the warranty expired. Subaru of America corporate support is USELESS. They try to sound like they want to help but they end up doing nothing. The dealer charged me almost $100 just to say it needs to be replaced, which they already knew. So the replacement radio is way over a thousand dollars + labor and as of today (October 2023) the radio is STILL not available. I don't think they will ever make more replacements so an aftermarket radio is probably the only solution. But Subaru are such bastards that they made the wire connections for the speakers extremely complicated to figure out. And my car has a ton of other problems with the power windows, tires that have leaked air since new and AC problems. Subaru is overrated crap. I'll never buy one again. Sorry for the long rant.
Oh Man, I am sorry to hear that you have "one of those"Subaru Dealers. I think I mentioned that in the video about them try to blame YOU, they 100% know these are defective and so many have had to be replaced. Maybe 1000s? And to charge you if so wrong, I'm sure they have seen this dozens of times, our local Subaru dealer knew exactly what the problem was before even looking at it, they had replaced many of these units. Thank you for the comment!
Same issue started a couple of days ago. I just managed to get the software updated, but it did not help. Mine is a 2019 Outback. Did you say they extended the warranties on these?
They did last year, but that time has past also. Call your local dealer and see if they are helpful or not. I hear a mixed bag from people, some help and some act stupid, like they never heard of this before. They have, it's just that common. Good Luck
WHAT, if you saw my follow up comment, it took about 5-6 weeks and my replace arrived and was install. Did they forget about you? It sound like you did follow up. My Subaru dealer said that they are now coming in faster, they "think" Subaru is catching up on replacing these. BUT STILL - Good Luck
@@StevesRealWorld Ive called the dealership at least once a month. Ive called Subaru of America Several times. Each time they tell me they dont know when the new ones will come in. Im at the point where im not sure i will ever buy another subaru again.
My 2019 outback radio started going crazy on July 20th, 2023. The dealership told me it would be 7 to 12 months to get a new radio. I have called the Subaru corporation, etc.. I am just getting the run around from all of them.
@@maryfoster-gq8og Same for me. I waited over a year for a new radio and called them every month for an update. It really is, I know this was not made by Subaru, but they should replace ALL of these. There was not recall for these, but there should've been - (There was a Service bulletin about this) Thank you for the comment!
Same here our 2018 Outback navigation randomly started ghosting... I noticed the irregularities behind the screen surface. Thanks for this video post... helping me understand that I'm not crazy 😂 I'll be taking my Outback to the dealership....
So the top link is only for 2020-2022 models and the bottom link is only for 2018 Outbacks. Many of these issues (including mine) are on 2019 model year outbacks. Any idea if the 2019 has a class action suit? As my infotainment system is 100% useless, I would get on board.
UPDATE - well it only took SIX Weeks for my replacement to arrive. I made an 8am appointment and it was done by 9:30am. It looks the same, BUT I hope they fixed the issue. The new unit comes with a one year warranty. But my old one was 5 years old before this all started.
did they replace the unit for free? mine is doing this as well and i have at least 15 bubbles under my screen :(
Can we get an update?
It is essential that the digitizer was replaced as a minimum. It’s possible they replaced the lcd as well as a unit, but not essential. Even bad connections at the ribbon cable can be trouble. The hope is the new bits are better made. I can say at least 5 other car companies have various touch screen issues and some will go back to radio with dials next year or possibly the one after so we don’t have to take our eyes off the road.

I am looking far and wide for a digitizer replacement. So far no go so it must be an exclusive. But give it time just in case

Good Lucky - There was an extension, but that might've ended also.
My Outback started doing this a few weeks ago, I thought it was the heat in Florida. Thank you for posting, I have never used any cleaner on the screen.
We live in WA State, but the heat really made this worse and the dots multiply. I hope your Subaru deal can help - Good Luck
i live in a cold location I thought it was the cold. What is for certain it's a manufacturing defect that Subaru will not take ownership on.
We have a 2021 wrx, same exact issue. I hate driving the car because of the radio. We will look into our warranty.
Yep, that sound like the same thing. It seems most dealers are not much help now unless you have an extended warranty on the car - good luck!
Saw those dots for months now but JUST started changing stuff on its own today…. Just moved 1200 miles too 😂 Damnit man!
I'm currently experiencing this with my Car. I got a new radio and am replacing it myself today. Fingers crossed it actually fixes the issue.
same issue here... where did you get the new unit? and how much?
My girl has the same issue.
Hi where you get the unit? My 2019 outback has the same issue
Sure enough mine started doing this afew months after warranty was up. Subaru is giving me the run around now.
So sorry, Subaru knows these are defective and should replace these. Our local Subaru said they had to replace a bunch of these before. They know wha'ts up - Good Luck.
Im in the same boat. I just passed 100k miles and they say they aren't responsible.
@@McDroogy3 Yep I agree. Its an issue that needs to be resolved sooner than later.
Has anyone had this to happen to anyone who own a legacy? I have a 2019 that is having the same problem.
I'm going to do the same, Subaru gave me a song and dance for 8 months only to tell me I'm SOL.
Yup,, new member of this club
Sorry to hear that, if you look at the comments, there are ALOT of us in this club.
Our 2018 Outbacm started doing this a few weeks ago.
Any updates on class action? We have the same thing going on with a 2019 outback with 62,000 miles.
There are a few links in the comments, BUT I think it's settled and expired now.
I work at a plant that laminates glass & polycarb, I immediately recognized this as delamination. (2019 legacy) I’m going to talk to my engineering head about options. Mine is really bad & im thinking about trying to peel off the front coating.
Hope you can save yours. I haven't had anyone comment that did could fix this issue other than replacing - good luck!
@@StevesRealWorld can i replace the unit with another one, like pionner o something else, which one you recommend??, legacy 2019 with the same isue..
Wow - crazy stuff - there should've been a recall on these for sure!
just started having this issue one month ago, my warranty was expiring the following week from today, i took it in today and they said it would be covered thankfully, not sure how long until a new head unit comes in yet though.
Good Luck.
My 2019 Outback has the same issue!! I don't have the extended warranty😢. Can you please share the class action information? Thank you.
I have this issue on subaru legacy 2019, barely 13k miles. Apps keep bouncing itself when driving, even if phone is not connected for maps
Wow, that's low mileage for sure. It's frustrating. If it has an extended warranty Subaru might help? Good Luck.
Hair Nation Rock on Steve and LeeAnn, hope the Subaru does not go into full "Christine" mode. Hope you two get a new unit.
We normally flip between Hair Nations and the 80s station. Thank you for the comment!
@@StevesRealWorld Thats exactly what I do, I might be a tad older, as I hit the 70s station alot and Yacht Rock alot too.🎸
I saw the dots a few weeks ago that are mentioned in the video.
Probably want to charge you $2k for a new unit. good luck.
2016 Outback also has this same issue. I’m in TX so the heat is probably a factor.
Heat is not a factor, it's happening in many other states as well.
@@lour9348 i have a legacy 2019. in southamerica, Chile, with the same isue, and here, there is no more than 25 celcius degrees

Does yours still work? Many of the 2018 and 2019 units have this problem - Thank you for the comment!
My 2018 Outback radio display just started failing this week! Ugh!!!
Oh no, if you look at the comments here, it's not a rare issue sadly - Good luck.
Thank you for the comment!
did you changed the unit??., wich one did you use, i have a legacy 2019..
Yes I have a 2019 Legacy with 20,000 miles. My radio screen does have those ghost dots and something drains the battery. No integrity.
I wonder if the moisture could have come from the engine?
same with my 2019 legacy, can we replace the radio for another one, like pionner or something else??
I have a 2021 Subaru WRX with this problem how long is the warranty?
I would call your Subaru dealer tomorrow and talk to them.. I had an extended warranty on my 89 and I just made the cut off when this happened to me. Good luck.

Subaru just replaced mine, 18’ Outback. Normally $1200. I still got over a year left on my warranty.
did you have extended warranty?
@@chrisna9861 something like 6 year, 100000 miles. I made them give me friends and family pricing on the warranty, 1/2 price so $1100. I got one of their loaner cars in 2019 with super low miles.
Yes, I had an extended warranty on my Outback, so it wasn't too hard to get a replacement.
Agree, this should've been a full recall, I wonder if there will be another class action lawsuit over this again in the future?
Really. It’s that bad huh… idoing it may change your perseption on your Subaru experience. It’s a good car with tons of modifications on the market. And your complaining about the stock radio failing. It is a 2019 and it shouldn’t fail but every stock radio fails, and sucks, just get a idoing for 429 bucks, plug and play and starlink bypass,

@@HeidiFegles how u make 400hp on a 2019 outback,love to know, thanks

There rip offs! Same thing happened to my wife. Never sent us the recall!

You need a new radio. The glass is actually pulling away from the unit itself. Just had my radio replaced. It literally took 5 months for the radio to come in since they no longer mass produce it. I purchased the extended warranty which covered it. It will cost you around 2500 to have the unit replaced at the dealership.

If mine wasn't still under a warranty I would go to our local Car Toys and get a 3rd party one cheaper than Subaru charges. Good Luck!
2018 outback same problem
Yep, I sure hear this alot, can't believe there was not a full recall for this - Thank you for your comment!
I also have a 2019 Outback 3.6, same problem. A dozen or so fingerprints on the glass and I can't use radio, maps etc without it freezing and scanning. My car is out of warranty. Called Subaru and dealer. We'll see!
Good luck, I hear some peoples Subaru dealers are more helpful than others, if they don't help, I would then call Subaru USA.
Sounds like a frustrating situation.
Yes, the frustrating part is waiting 4-6 months for the replacement - Thank you for the comment!
Same issue here
Yes, very seems more and more common. especially from the views and the comments here.
I have this same issue on my 2018 Legacy.
Not good, the dots seem to multiple, I hope Subaru can help you - Good luck
I’ve had a loaner since last Saturday. They said they had the replacement Wednesday. It’s sketchy. I’ve never ever had issues with my Subarus. I feel like my 2020 wrx has a covid curse. First the AC went around 9,000 miles, then a tire slashed at 10,000, now the touch screen at 15,000 miles. So crazy!! I said the same thing “my Radio is possessed!”
Wow, that sounds like ALOT for a 2020... The possessed radio is very annoying, just when a good song is play, BAM, the channel changes.
Hi Steve, I don't see the link to the Class Action Suit...
Here are two links that have more information

Hi Steve
I have a 2019 outback does anyone know or have any information that could be useful I appreciate it.
My 2019 Outback is doing the same thing. I’m seeing the dealer tomorrow.
My 2019 Legacy Sport, same thing, haywire infotainment system.
Same here. Did you get anywhere with the dealer?@@sharyndavis709
Same, I just got the email on how to update the software but I can't get the screen to do anything.
I feel you! Same thing happened to my wife! There rip offs!
Good Luck
4-6 months is a joke. I have been waiting over a year and they can't give me a date for when it will be fixed
After a year, all of a sudden they said they had no record of me being on the waiting list! Subaru is losing a lot of customers for life. (including me) Either Honda or Toyota will be my next car.
@@maryfoster-gq8ogsame here. I have a 2019 Outback and this issue started about a year ago. SofA just gives us the run around every time we call. It’s such bs they know they installed a defective product in probably thousands of vehicles.
Same thing here.
OMG, mine is now 10X worse it's spreading. Did you talk to Subaru service about it yet? How did it go. We are still waiting on the replacement.
Looks like whatever coating in there is delaminating.
Yes it might be, there has been no fix for this other than a replacement sadly. Subaru wants around $2000 for the replacement. Thank you for the comment.
That is crazy
It really is, I know this was not made by Subaru, but they should replace ALL of these. There was not recall for these, but there should've been - (There was a Service bulletin about this) Thank you for the comment!
Same here our 2018 Outback navigation randomly started ghosting... I noticed the irregularities behind the screen surface.
Thanks for this video post... helping me understand that I'm not crazy 😂
I'll be taking my Outback to the dealership....
Good luck, some dealers are alot more helpful than others I've been told!! Thank you for the comment!
My 2016 is just as bad, so it's pre 2018 as well.
OH NO, I have not heard of many 2016s with the problem, so I guess the 2017's are doomed also! Thank you for the comment!
@@StevesRealWorld 2016 over here just started this 2 weeks ago. Thanks for posting, it's been super helpful I will follow up with our results.
Have the same issue here up in Canada. Will never buy another Subaru.
My radio just started with this issue. Uggh.
OH NO, it only gets worse, My 4 dots turned into dozens in 6 weeks.. Hope Subaru can help you! Thank you for the comment!
Same
Goes to dealer friday 6yo car and this shit happens unreal, embarrassing. If I wanted this issue I would have bought a land rover
100% digitizer
Thank you for the comment!
Just another reason not to buy Subaru.
Thank you for the comment!
Kind of looks like a super glue print😂 that's pretty sad that they want to con people and you paid for that vehicle to be right
Agree, but on the inside of the glass, our Outback is about 5 years old, no way these should fail in that short time. Thank you for the comment!

So the top link is only for 2020-2022 models and the bottom link is only for 2018 Outbacks. Many of these issues (including mine) are on 2019 model year outbacks. Any idea if the 2019 has a class action suit? As my infotainment system is 100% useless, I would get on board.
