Question for you Harvey :) When animating with a referenced Character in Maya, it creates an Animation Layer automatically which cannot be merged or deleted. Do you know how to get animations down to 1 single layer whilst using Referenced characters please?
Thanks for the tutorial! I have seen like 4-5 tutorials so far and they were all explaining the feature itself, but none went to the point of saying how best to use it, and at what point it would be a better practice to actually merge (smart bake!) it in the base animation layer, indeed the idea of layering multiple layers is tempting at first sight but as u said we end up losing the overall picture, not to mention how the software starts lagging so soon. One last thing I would have loved to see in the tutorial is how you would key the weight of the layers, as in not just the technique, but the best practice of weight keying and manipulating
Thanks for the excellent comment and suggestion Rebel. If you submit a video to season 2 of Animation Powertips I can certainly cover that in a future episode. ua-cam.com/video/D-LYXw44ZSg/v-deo.html
you rock! Thanks a lot! Do you have a tutorial that goes deeper into animator mechanics? - as in hotkeys, shortcuts ... the good stuff that makes you quick and efficient.
Thanks man great vid! Do you know what might slow back animation process? the amount of the selected controllers or the keys? both layer were filtered by Euler Filter via Graph and im working on Maya 2020 32 GB RAM.
Hey Harshal. Thanks. Override and additive layers are incredibly useful for certain occasions. I’ll try and cover them in a more advanced video in the future.
I know this is an old video, however I was just wondering how you would avoid the rig disconnecting when merging? When I merge my layers the knee controllers on my rig disconnect from the skeleton and no longer influence the knee direction
Could you please do a tutorial on how to make smooth transitions between animation layers? I have different animation cycles on several layers, mainly FK, one IK, and combining them is difficult for me.
How do you guys use Layers? Feel free to ask any questions below.

I always wondered about animation layers. Thank you for the video my man!
Thank you for watching.

Hey Funky...thanks a lot. And yes, have a look at the Power Tips playlist there's quite a few there about HotKeys, UI and efficiency
Thanks man great vid!

Thank you for this video, Harvey!
What are your thoughts about setting a new layer to "override" or "additive"?
Hey Harshal. Thanks. Override and additive layers are incredibly useful for certain occasions. I’ll try and cover them in a more advanced video in the future.
@@harveynewman Thank you! :)
I usually use them to put breath cycles and to experiment other things over the base animation.
Yeah there’s quite a lot more to them. I’ll go into a more advance layer setup in a later video. After we cover the basics.

Hey Secular..when it comes to cycles is good to keep the layering to a minimum...I normally keep them on the base layer as much as possible.
@@harveynewman Thanks, I thought so. Unfortunately not when I started making them.
Wtf, I didn't know about the smart bake, so I applied the simplify curve after the merge but it was always a big mess xD
Ah yes simplify curve is not the best thing to use. If you use smart bake you won’t need to simplify your curves. ;)
brilliant
Thanks 🙏🏾
