  • I'm going to take a wild guess and say Babymetal "Karate" is about battling your inner demons using the sacred martial art of KARATE!!! No? I liked this song a lot.

'Karate' was the lead single for their second album in 2016. You did get it right, it is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this as it is a Japanese martial art and reflects their culture - it also has no backward moves.
As you spotted, the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you spot the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people notice that).
They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible. Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time.
This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards".
Who was moaning at you for doing live performances? In this instance the official video is probably the right choice - actually all their official videos are well worth seeing, but live is where they are always at their best - and live is where you get to see what Yui and Moa are really there for - getting audience involved and hyped. Their parts of the songs, the chanting etc, are the bits for the crowd to sing along with.
I don't see it as a gimmick. BABYMETAL is the girls just being girls, but it is one of the things that makes them different to every other band - and if that counts as a gimmick then every band has a gimmick. It doesn't mean Babymetal as a band is a gimmick any more than other bands - having gimmicks doesn't make them all gimmick bands.
They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group aged 11 and 12, those were just their natural voices (as very small and young Japanese girls), not an effect being added to make them more cutesy than they were. As members of that group they would sing songs and dance, the only difference is that instead of singing and dancing to pop music they do it to metal music - and it is metal, not just distorted guitars stuck on pop tunes.

Karate is great, but even better if you watch the Download 2016 performance.... imagine about 60k + metal heads, singing along, and jumping to Su's command. great crowd interaction. Their MV's are good, but live is best.... especially since most of their "official" stuff are just pro shots of their concerts says it all.

I love the cutesy element of Babymetal because of the contrast. They can be uplifting, but at the same time kind of like a horror movie with demon dolls or a sweet innocent little girl holding a butcher knife behind her back. It's not run-of-the-mill, like so many metal bands of today. Babymetal brings something new to the table, not just the same old stagnant hairy tattoo'd growling dude band playing music that you've heard over and over before.

In general, BABYMETAL‘s live videos are great, because their energy (and the fans‘) is so exceptionally strong and exciting to watch. But all of their official videos are good as well, especially this one. The story is pretty easy to follow, you got most of it. The message is that if you don‘t give up and support each other, you have already won the fight against your inner demons.
It‘s too bad that you don’t like the kawaii element, because it’s a very important and defining part of their appeal. I had hoped that this song might help you get used to it by the third chorus, but it seems like it didn‘t.
I think it‘s a pretty strong song, both as a Heavy Metal song and as a Pop song. It‘s almost impossible to keep your head from moving along to the final chorus.

I get that the "backing vocals" by Moa and Yui and the way they're used in the songs aren't for everybody. Personally I don't think I particularly liked that when I started listening to them either but liked everything around them so much that I've grown more and more accustomed to them and for me they're now just part of the package and I couldn't imagine their songs without it.

  • @shma1israel

Good news: If you have listened to Megitsune, Gimme Chocolate, and Karate, you have already encountered (or endured?) most Babymetal songs that feature this style of chanting by Yui & Moa, so you're in the clear from now on. ;-) The chants have cultural significance, though: in Megitsune, that's what you would hear people call out during traditional Japanese festivals (while carrying a Mikoshi shrine, for example), and the 'SEIYA! SOIYA!' calls are what you utter while doing actual karate moves (same as KIAI!).
I think in this song, the vocals are paced perfectly: just when you as a casual listener start to think, 'Oh, I'm not gonna like this,' Su's melodic pre-chorus line (in the mode of Harmonic Minor, if I'm not mistaken, with all its haunting and oriental sounding qualities) cuts right through to your heart, just to be offset once more by the chorus, which is in a Major key. All of that is nailed down by that heavily grooving main riff, and the djenty syncopated guitars also keep the SEIYA! vocals grounded in my opinion.
You guessed right, the visuals do a good job at explaining what the song is all about, and rest assured: this is one of the handful of songs for which watching the official video is more or less mandatory, for one because of the storytelling, but then also because no live version (as great as most of them are, you should definitely check them out) sounded as good as this version. It's the one song that the Kami Band always struggled to make better.

Moa and Yui's biggest talent is getting the crowd into the show during live performances. Not to take away from their vocal talents though, both of them have performed sections of Headbanger and some solo performances for birthday concerts that are vocally appreciably different than anything that they do in a duo or with the entire trio. The Black Babymetal songs that the pair do together get the crowd going, though I'm not sure those songs get performed any longer, someone correct me on that, Moa may solo those now?

Moa performed the Black BABYMETAL song '4no Uta!' as a solo at 'Legend S' (December 2017) along with 'GJ!'.
She kept doing 'GJ!' during much of the 2018 tour, and most recently in 2021 at two of the Budokan shows with supporting dancers.
She also did an updated version of 'Onedari Daisakusen' at Budokan (2021) in which she acted the part of an "older sister" instructing four younger supporting dancers in how to sweet talk your parents. : )

As far as the voices of Yui and Moa being corny, it would only be corny if they were faking that voice. That IS their real voice however. That doesn't mean you have to like it of course. If you don't then you don't. No big deal.

One plus for you with the live version of this song would be the crowd shouting along with the "Seiya, se se se seiya!
Soiya, so so so soiya!" parts.
They made a lot of friends among other metal groups by playing a bunch of festival dates, and the live version of this song converted quite a few.
After the second studio album came out in 2016, they toured with Korn/Stone Sour, The Red Hot Chili peppers, and Guns 'n' Roses, and also opened for groups like Judas Priest and Metallica.
Although they don't bug me at all, I'm glad you're able to set aside your feelings about the cuter/younger sounding vocals, at least to a certain extent, and enjoy what you can.

Nice reaction. Babymetal only have a couple of MV of this type. So it's fine to watch them. It does add to their live performance cause now you know where some of those dance moves come from. You are not alone in your feeling about those vocals. It never really bothered me since Rob from Judas Priest has been screeching for years before them. And today Babymetal are in their 20s so the kid voice is starting to go away. But When you watch them (and I hope you do) perform this live now. Mostly because when the crowd sings Yui nd Moa's parts with them the song sounds very different. Also when Su starts to sing I get chills. It really is a haunting entrance.

as much as you don't like on the other hand there's people who cried after hearing this song, and if you can't feel it that way there's no problem, but be aware of the other side too because YuiMetal and MoaMetal is a force on their own as much as you don't like, but again is totally understandable if you don't feel the same way.
I'm seeing you probably gonna like more of their latest material on 3rd album, but although got less kawaii elements (because they're older now) there's still more experimental and pop and synths elements that might still drop you out a little bit just in case you don't like that, but we'll see it if you still continue watching more.
As many others said, this is one of the most anime vibe song from Babymetal, along with Syncopation; as i like to said myself: Karate could be the opening and Syncopation could be the ending song \m/

The cutsy element is what makes BM special. Take it away and you have a completely different experience which isn't particularly outstanding anymore (well, the musical part as such is still outstanding nevertheless; but in that respect you have other bands which are great as well...). However, tastes deviate and that is totally ok. As for me, I can't stand the growling in metal music (unless it is used as some gimmicky element; that's ok)...

I agree - it's called "kawaii metal" for a reason. However, I think Babymetal has lost that now and have become just a J-metal band but a good one. Example: their latest MV "BxMxC" - a damn fine tune (and a terrific video!) but there certainly nothing kawaii about it. In fact, I'm of the opinion that almost all of the kawaii left the band when Yui felt it necessary to leave. Personally, I hope she is doing well; I think that time she fell off the stage during a concert was a game-changer for her and the band.

And since you said you enjoy Su's vocals more I'd love to recommend you Akatsuki (live video of it is from 2014 Budokan concert) or Amore (a bit harder to find but Babymetal Reactor Resource should have the Wembley Arena version of it). No Rain No Rainbow is also a Su solo, but it's a slow power ballad and the live version from Legend S makes its perfomance so much sadder. (BRR also has it along with translated lyrics)
EDIT: also forgot to add that reacting to Headbanger live is a MUST. Legend 1997 is my favorite version closely followed my 'Moabanger'. Especially since you can tell the huge difference between the maturity of their voices (and Moa singing in Moabanger).

Yeah you guessed right, Karate is about battling against your inner demons, the karate in the choreo thing is just a resource to express it and to show japanese culture to the outside world.
About the Yui & Moa screams, yeah, it is a problem for most of us that come from a long life of metal, but at least me I've learnt to not put much attention to it. In the end is one of those things that makes Babymetal special and differentiates them in the scene. The high pitch screams, the "sore" screams, the high interaction with the audience...all those things are known as "ai no te" and it is the bread and butter of the japanese idol music scene. They have incorporated it to metal with Babymetal. So even if it is hard to digest, it is what it is, one of their most deep trademarks.
And I assure you that for a lot of people with different backgrounds this is their favorite part of Babymetal.

Enjoyed this reaction. This is my favorite BABYMETAL song. It's also one of my top 10 favorite songs. If you want a song with dynamics you should try "No God" live by BAND_MAID. They are a hard rock band with occasional heavy metal elements. "No God" is a fast driving song with a great drum solo introduction, great bass line and bass solo. I would also suggest "Warning!" by them. The music video has car chases, crashes, explosions and maids strapped to the top of racing cars a la Mad Max while playing.

The Official MV is amazing. The "Chanty" part by Yui and Moa get the crowd immediately involved. When live you hear the ENTIRE crowd joining in. Which makes it that much more fun. You gotta lighten up and just enjoy all BABYMETAL offers. Yui and Moa kill it when they harmonize with Su and when they perform as Black BABYMETAL. Or try Meta Taro. All 3 of them get sing in that song a bit more and it isn't chants. Now that they are a little older maybe you will appreciate their newer stuff. 🤘🦊🤘

You got the lyrics. Yeah it's about fighting your inner demons. Karate really isn't that Japanese. It's from Okinawa and was unknown on the bigger Japanese islands until the 1950s. It gained popularity from the influence of boxing. But apparently Okinawa karate was a lot better and it lost a lot of it's diverse elements when it was popularized. For instance it included ground combat. They actually watched 'Karate Kid' for inspiration.
I don't believe in over-analysis of Babymetal lyrics. You can never truly understand Japanese lyrics. Unless you're Japanese. What i favor is a general idea of what the song is about and they do a really good job of expressing the meaning through dance.

Imagine all the millions of non-English literate people who first heard American metal bands fit the first time. Nice musically, but whatever about the vocals. Where would “Metal” be now. Bands wouldn’t have sold out stadiums throughout the world. Since people don’t understand English.
But those people got past that foreign language and enjoyed the music in its totality. They learned the lyrics. Made them appreciate the music as a whole.
BabyMetal isn’t a gimmick. But hey, purists for the last 10 years use the criticism that the girls are just a gimmick. Mockingly saying the Kami Band are great but insult all the hard work BabyMetal has done as just gimmick. But hey, I respect your opinion. You say they are a gimmick.

Babymetal IS a gimmick ! That is obvious. They have other aspects besides the music to draw attention to themselves. That's not a bad thing unless the gimmick part is all they have. Babymetal draws attention through the costumes, lore, etc., but they hold that attention because they are so dam good.

Yes, people try to use it as an insult but I am saying it is not an insult. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a gimmick if you can back it up with a high quality performance and Babymetal sure as hell does that every time. We shouldn't pretend its not a gimmick however. All that does is it leads to a 'yes it is! No it isn't!' argument that goes nowhere.

@@jeffschreifels8651 as you said it’s subjective. You might think the ladies are a gimmick. But that doesn’t make you right. Just like I think they’re not a gimmick doesn’t make me right. But those who use the word gimmick has generally used it as an insult. Even if they don’t think they’re being insulting.
Su & Moa could be wearing pajamas and still their music would have the same impact to many. It’s the Jpop aspect of BabyMetal… costumes, dancing, etc.

You as a radio producer, and mostly all the fucking old metal so called dudes out there, should be grateful to this band, and Japanese bands in general to bring some shinion heavy metal again.Otherwise it would have die as a genre, when iron maiden, Metallica,Slayer, and other legends will retire

Bro...calm down. people are allowed to not like things. Not everyone will like metal, or j-pop, or rap, or country music, or any fusions of what they love with something they simply dont. I am an "old metal dude" and love babymetal. Most of the younger people I talk to dislike BM...so you figure that one out. Anyhow, calm down. If someone doesn't like the thing you like to the level you like, thats okay. BM won't pack up because some people dislike the fusion...they will pack up when their corporate overlords decide they are done.
