If you’re new to my channel, my name is Alex Hormozi. I’m the founder and managing partner of Acquisition.com. It’s a family office, which is just a formal way of saying we invest our own money into companies. Our 10 portfolio companies bring in over $200,000,000+ per year. Our ownership stake varies between 20% and 100% of them. Given this is a YT channel, and anyone can claim anything, I’ll give you some stuff you can google to verify below.
How I got here…
21: Graduated Vanderbilt in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
31 yrs old: Started our family office Acquisition.com. We invest and scale companies using the $42M in distributions we had taken + the cash from the $46.2M exit.
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.
34 yrs old: I became co-owner of Skool.com to help the many people who want to start a business online do so.
Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).
To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.

@@kevinarias9589 If I’m honest. No. It’s so common these days employers don’t care if you have a degree. My best advice, graduate high school, And go work for a trade company. Plumber, electrician, carpenter etc. Most will pay for you to do the schooling online while you apprentice there. You’ll have a worthy skill and make more money then most of your peers and not have any debt

I spent 6 years of my life in college, simply because I believed that was the only way to make money. I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood, everyone was a doctor, lawyer, finance, management or whatever else white-collar esque-role you can think of. Growing up I was told that I needed a masters degree to make a 6-figure job.
I wanted to drop out of school when I was in 6th grade. I hated it. I always hated it. I knew at 12 years old that none of this was going to help me long term, I was just jumping through hoops, so I could be trained like a dog. A good little doggie that would do everything his future master would tell him.
When it came to college I had no idea what I wanted to do in life, but I choose an engineering degree because I've always been interested in science. I struggled with that choice for 6 years because I refused to not graduate, but I was also deeply depressed because I spent every day of my life doing something I didn't believe in.
After I graduated I spent a year or so trying to find a job in engineering, but struggled since my experience and skills were all over the place. I needed a job so I just went into a sales job. I had actually done a few sales jobs before this so I didn't really suck that much, but I hated the product.
By a stroke of luck someone working there owned a marketing agency and offered to collaborate. Another product that sucked (this guy knew nothing about marketing), but it sparked me unto something I now LOVE.
I started my own LLC since I had better marketing skills after learning everything I could. I struggled a lot starting, but now I'm making over $100k a year running my own one man agency, and building it up to take my income to the millions.
All from skills I learned on the internet. Admittedly the engineering degree is incredibly helpful in what I do, but realistically these are all things I could have learned without going to college.
I needed that experience though. I needed to be beat down by life beyond all belief in order to transform myself and my belief systems. If I had an Alex in my life I may have made different decisions, but I hold no regrets. I know that I'll reach my dream, and most importantly I enjoy my life because I'm being true to myself.

I can relate to the fork in the road analogy. I grewup in a semi poor area. People either worked entry level jobs or did not work at all. I grew up listening to teachers who kept repeating "If you do not go to college, you will end up working at McDonalds". I took that at face value and studied hard all through high school. I started at a community college. I was going to college to get a job (not for the social life). I took a humanities class in my first semester, it was alright, it was part of the general ed. By the 2nd semester, I took a philosophy class, and the teacher really leaned into the whole "college is for learning, not about getting a job"
That was when it dawned on me, college was about ideology, not making you marketable. I dropped out of college and yeah, it was a punch to the gut. I drifted from job to job. I got tired of getting by. I discovered a lot of online tutorials on programming. I started typing the code I saw in the tutorials. It was fun, I could code in my spare time, there was no deadline because it was not like In a class where there is a due date. Eventually I became a web developer based on skills, not a degree.
the main lesson is, it is difficult to drop out of college because it is expected of us to go. However, if you can overcome that initial guilt, you can make it.
Alex brings up a good point. I think another huge factor that many people miss is self-awareness. Awareness of your own skills, values, preferences, personality traits etc. If you are not aware of these it will categorically hinder your ability to choose a long term fulfilling career path.
The main issue here is that most people are too busy keeping up with the Joneses that they never spend the time reflecting on this.
I really wish this was around 25 years ago when I was in high school and decided to go to a junior college. However, for the future generation, they need to watch this all day everyday and then apply what they've learned from this video

I’m in the exact same situation as Jacob; using college as a crutch. I just started and can’t decide if I want to go all in on sales because I don’t know if I feel confident enough in basic skills - being able to actually push myself on my own and really work hard to ‘make it’ without traditional due dates and such. I think school has really fucked a lot of kids up in that sense - were terrible at time management and doing anything on our own without supervision.
Im in the same boat man. It's like we've been trained to want to relax and chill when we arent in class or at a job

Guys I know that school and such may be the cause of many of your failings, but don't use it as an excuse to not do anything. This is YOUR life. YOU decide where it's gonna go. Not your teachers or your parents or anybody else. If you REALLY want to do something, you will do it. Good luck guys!

I finished my college degree after 4 years and wish I started in sales earlier. Got 2 years of SaaS AE experience
A word of caution, I dropped out of college to start a business and it was a "mistake".
The big difference I think is Jacob identified which skill he needed to learn and got a job learning that skill. Me in my business had to learn several skills, but didn't really master none.
Getting a job learning skills is an excellent way to master business skills, especially sales.
If you really want to pursue a business idea I'd recommend doing it as a side hustle and getting a job learning the skill you want/need. If the idea is not so deep in your heart just pursue the skill and try the business many years later when you have the skill.
Also as a side note, if you are still in college you can use your student status to get an internship wherever you want to learn the skill, treat that internship with more importance than college and maybe eventually do drop out when you see you can land a job with what you have learned.
I agree with this. Reality is most won’t become billionaire or millionaire entrepreneurs. Also at 18 years old you have no skills, no network, college CAN not will but CAN get you those things. Major in something useful for a good profession, I always say software engineer, actuary, accountant, nurse practitioner etc. unless you go Ivy League where if you major in finance you can get into banking and law and have a 200K starting salary. But for every other ordinary college those professions can land you a starting salary 60-100K. After 3 years experience 100K+. Then you finally have skills and experience you can look for gaps in the market to start a business on the side. I worked on the rigs put myself through school going back in 2020 became a software engineer. Make decent money nothing amazing but an ok living. While many of my peers tried drop shipping, Shopify e-commerce all these different things, even sales. I think all of them failed. They’re in their mid 20’s now doing door dash and cutting hair chasing that entrepreneur dream which may never happen. Whereas Iv saved good money buying a house shortly to house hack. Companies paying for my masters and maybe PhD if I go for it. Significant raises along with those degrees. And side jobs along the way are happening! Some of which can lead to potential business opportunities. My friend became a nurse practitioner is getting a few years of experience and is going to open his own clinic in a few years in a state that legally allows that. That is a potentially very profitable business! Which would not have been possible without college.
All this is to say I know everyone wants to be a billionaire but reality is most of us don’t have what it takes. Sucks to face reality but I’m glad I realized that reality and chose a financially viable and stable path that has a high probability outcome of success rather than the one - starting a business- which doesn’t. If I did I’d probably be doing door dash and cutting hair with my old friends.

I dropped outta college 5 years ago.. I learned sales, started my own business and now I’m making more money than I ever would’ve if I would’ve stayed in college and became a power engineer. Great video Alex.

Man what a blessing for Jacob. For the rest of you, it's possible to learn sales/persuasion and apply it in any field to help you progress. It's not fun or easy but eventually you will sharpen your skills and with focus, really make a difference. Good luck!
After two years of being on and off with college I finally have fully committed to dropping out. I was definitely not doing it for myself but for other people. Now that I’m out I feel the most clear minded I’ve been in year. Currently focusing on building a construction company with my dad. Definitely going to take a lot of time and effort but I am super excited for the future. On top of that I am taking on copywriting to help with my marketing skills.

Hi Alex. I started to adopt your money, buisness and lifestyle philosophy for about 6-8 months now and the quality of my life increased tremendously. Forever grateful for the genuine good will to help others, inspiring me and thousands others to be like that.
This helped me put a lot of thoughts I had about University/College in perspective. The key is not dropping out without a plan but switching tracks to something greater and something that would help move you in the direction you want to head towards - faster and better.
Couldn't agree more. I made a video about this a couple years ago on my channel. I'm proud of it, although it's no where near as good as Alex's. I will NOT be pushing my kids to go to college. If they want a career that requires it, so be it. I have a couple degrees and I have not used either for any of my career paths.
I wish I'd have seen this 7 years ago but I'm still grateful that we have people like you putting this out for free. I was one of the smart kids in high school and didn't even consider not going to uni. I went for 2 years and have about $20k to pay off but I think I'd have been worse-off completing the degree and getting trapped in "the matrix".
I'm now booking my first sales calls for my online business and should be self-sustaining in a couple months.

Absolutely how I feel. As 18 yo I had this mentally as well.
We use the excuse of using university as shield, but when you see the big picture almost all graduaters are the same. So if I want to get advantage of them I have to choose the unconviction path, I have to learn in books and courses and stop wasting time.
But recently I found my way in my mind, my brain and frequency alight with the universe and I saw the track of my life.

When I had 8 yo I was on school and my school sometimes had news to sell and I was the top 2 of selling. I had forgot this, but recently as I was getting knowledge in self improvement content I found I already did it. So I thought omg, this means my purpose as been alight since I was child and therefore everything starts make sense

I don't usually ask God for signs, but today I did since I'm at the crossroads with deciding whether to drop out (or alternatively move to a private college where I can finish up my degree without spending 100% of my time studying dumb stuff) or not
Good thing is, that I already gained enough confidence because I've been already getting business success's and proving my hunger to myself. Also I've passed through more than half of my college subjects, so I also gained that kind of confidence that I'm capable of learning and digesting more complex topics and subjects, which was my initial goal when I returned to college 2 years ago.
Then 2 hours later after asking God, I wake up from a short nap I took after an exam. BAM. First video on the feed which just kept covering my "objections" or concerns as they were showing up.

Honestly my university years have been fun so far and it will be even more of a blast. I have met really cool friends and people as well even though my self esteem before college was abysmal. I am pursuing engineering degree along with my few friends and we just want to live a normal life with family and fulfilling engineering jobs. I respect the opinions of not going to college but if you are not from america you dont go into heavy debt most likely and also in america you have a lot of business people and entrepreneurs and such that you can look up to. Dont really have those opportunities in south eastern europe. Just wanted to give a perspective, i really respect all those videos tho and i might start a company in engineering field after i graduate but just wanted to note that in some countries if you dont have a college degree you are basically nobody, also every market here is drastically smaller than in US so even less chance that you will hit it big.
If you start an online business, where you come from is not important, you can sell a digital product like a digital course and build a community online on social media, launch the product and make a ton of money, i know 2 girls who made +$400K with a launch of a course about IG strategies and they're from Belgium and France

Hello friend(didnt want to guess at your name, haha), I was both impressed and sadden by your comment. Impressed, but cause you are not a typical youth that we mostly hear from. Its either the Entrpreneurial dreams or the save the supposed socio-economic inequalities of societies.
both are so watered down now, that they are like commodities, Unfortunately. But you know you wanted a "normal" life with a fulfilling career, which is sadly labeled by many as the 9-5 wasted. But what so many dont realize in younger ages is you will go through many changes in life, some good some bad and life goes sometimes not where you wanted. But I hear so much of its "this or that" mentality, and life is way more than that. Colllege should be your Experiences/Trying/Learning time, with a lot of that time focused on fun experiences and meeting other people than our hometowns. Sadly, I feel for many as the price has becoming almost criminal, but if Parents are paying, I say take advantage and live it up, and learn about yourself and the world and begin knowing what you like to do. But as many say, Live YOUR LIFE, once you know in your heart n mind, dont let peoples words or feelings affect YOU. Satay true to your natural wants and your needs will be met. But before, I ramble any longer, know that technology has made the world so much more accessible. Meaning, who's to say you dont end up running your engineering firm from your "smaller market" but are doing projects for the Mega markets. Sidenote, I have a habit of checking the bottom of websites, and I have yet, in the last year, to find one that doesnt have a "career" or "jobs" section and are hiring for multiple jobs and postions, dont get intimidated by all the word salad they put in the descriptions, if its your area of focus, go for it. Esp. while young, you can work 1-2 yrs somewhere and bounce around and build experience and experiences plus networking, learning from others, and know Generations before didnt have options like we have now, and they made those options possible as we all will for the Next. Go MAKE MEMORABLE MOMENTS for yourself n others and watch how you Stay Smilin' through Life!! @DavySTUN
So happy to see other people enjoy their time in university. I'm going into my second year of engineering here in Northern Europe and I can't say I've enjoyed it. I'm introverted (even on the spectrum), so even though I have a desire to belong and have friends, it hasn't really gone too well. Failing nearly every exam on top of that has left me so stressed out. I'm seriously considering dropping out, but I think something like sales will be even harder for me.

I dropped out of my college after 2 semisters and it was totally worth it, currently im working on my media startup, earning good money which i could have never earned while doing college
College acts as an backup plan. It allows you to explore other field you are passionate about, and say if you fall you have something to fall back on. I feel it’s good to have a backup plan, helps u a lot when u fall.

Thank you for this. I went to school, waisted years, to get my MBA of which I fell short 3 credits.
Now I own my 3 rd bank both in PE and family office. Not one thing do I used from going to college.
I’ve always been a practical thinker and even in high school I had the inclination that college didn’t matter to 90% of the students attending. I always knew that if i could find a way to add value to the market, i didn’t need college. If i could convince people to part with their money in exchange for some value, i could make money. But i was always told i was stupid by my family, never pushed to be independent when i had good ideas. Basically my options were go to college or be a failure. The pressure was enormous. Now its been a couple years since school ended. I’m not going to lie, my life sucks. I have a decent and very stable job, but i don’t even make enough to rent my own apartment. I need out of this situation.

@@Will_4560I would either 1. Continue self learning software development - I was doing it for a while and it was fun but I got discouraged by my family. Or 2. Start a business around something that didn’t feel like work to me. Those things were drawing, artistic ventures, costumer service, talking to people. Now just thinking off the top of my head maybe I would sell wall paintings for commercial spaces or something like that. Anything to get the business juices flowing. The best part about those two things are that I could’ve failed for 10 years and then gone back to college if I wanted. Nobody would care if you go to college late, heck you’d have a better idea of what you would want to do anyway

I got my entrepreneurial start in college. Granted, I got kicked out of 2 schools for it. But I learned more from that than from any business class.

Long story short: Today I make more than the salary I was supposed to have after 6 years of college and I hope that next year I will make 6 figures (in France it’s a “lot”)
My advice for younger people watching this would be:
Be very pragmatic. Don’t take a decision based on your emotion

Dropping out was my best decision. Went all in and now I’m pulling 60k a money at 19. Aiming for 150k minimum by the end up the year
Jacob made the right choice, I'm 20 the same age as him (in college), didn't have a mentor like Alex when i was 17. I'm running a business while in college but haven't received the amount of success Jacob did. Not really interested in college but can't drop out. I haven't proven myself to the point of getting the confidence of dropping out. Apart from that, College isn't bothering my priorities, it just exists on the side so I'm like sure I'll continue. But yeah it's a waste of time for sure.

I chose college because I didn't knew what I wanted to do. 4 years later I feel like I've learned nothing new and watching my friends getting a job while I'm lost. I tried businesses and had some success until parents forced me to quit business and complete graduation before that

I am scared telling my parents of dropping out, what i have proposed telling is while being in collg, i will take an online school / course and if the course does better than my collg, then i am going to convince my parents that this school fits better for me since it gives me better resylts, then drop out, its just i am scared if things dont go the way my parents want.

I got a 3.7, went to a cheap state school and graduated with no debt. I took 5 years to finish because I worked throughout school, but I graduated into a 6 figure finance job straight out of school.
Now I’m 25 and making $350k+ in private equity, with no real ceiling for pay and pretty good stability.
My point - school can be worth it, but you really have to have a plan. My plan wasn’t perfect, but I had a pretty good idea for what field I wanted to go into. I knew how to finance it and was pretty organized. I had some fun, but it never got out of hand.
I think you have to be 2x as organized and focused if you don’t decide to go to college. This isn’t a “cheat code” - it’s really easy to end up working low-wage jobs at shitty companies with no degree these days. So many of my friends who didn’t go to college have accomplished almost nothing 7 years out of high school.

I think this speaks to the person not the decision.. There are lots of people I know who live the same mediocre lives who went to school also. Sure, there's more structure, but it's all the ambition for the person... There's a marginal bump, but it's not that significant, the people who have no ambition and go to school either drop out with additional debt, or have a bump in lifestyle that's not changing their life, because they're not directing their life...

I'm in a super similar boat but will be graduating with around 30k in debt. I'm not sure if you're a finance major but I'm setting my sights on getting hired at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange out of college like one of my friends did with a finance degree from the same college. Trying to become a market maker one day and I think the degree can be worth it if you want to do something hyper specific.
I'm still currently in the military... In my specific situation, because I will most likely get paid to go, I'm using college as a vessel to have more time than working a job, or pulling a 12 hr shift in the army every weekday. Having 12 hours of not very focusable time is extremely frustrating. So college seems like a dream as far as having excess time to do productive things.
I just started college and this reminds me how I have to be more focused. I don't have time to waste.

As someone who made the wrong decision and actually went to college, over 80% of all of my classes have been a waste of my time. When I tell people that they think I am just complaining about my classes or that I don't like to learn/study. The truth is that I genuinely know that only 20% or less of the classes I have taken have added to my skillset in a way that will enable me to be more successful. The main issue is that I would have learned those skills regardless of whether or not I went to college. I only kept going so that I would have that dumb piece of paper as something to fall back on should my business plans fail and it was really cheap to get my degree from the university I attended.
A lot of parents scoff at me for saying my 13 year old probably will be an entrepreneur and won't need college. She's already learning sales and marketing thanks to me and researching her first ecommerce idea. Candles. Thanks for this video.
I went to college and ended up getting a sales job at Google (required a degree). My income was capped at 80-90k a year with their commission stricture.
Now I work in construction / sales and earn 2-3x the amount I earned at Google, easily, working 9 months a year.

I just got a job in sales, did sales gigs on the side (MLM), then started my own company eventually. Everything in business starts with sales!

Tried University for 100 days then dropped out. Next year went to community college and stopped going to classes because I was too busy working. 6 months later, I'm have a full-time job knocking doors. The pay is nowhere near what Jacob makes, but I'm learning a lot about sales, and am no longer dependent on my parents. I'm glad I tried university, but I'm even more glad I dropped out when I did. Trust yourself. Trust the process. Don't trust universities.

Watching this valuable video as a current student majoring in education and as a single mom of 1... I'm doubting my choice of being an elementary bilingual teacher, specifically on the circumstances I put myself in. I've disappointed my father in many things and becoming a school teacher is a way to redeem myself, although I'm not very convinced on the idea of teaching for the next 10 years of my life. It's not practical, especially with the pay although the benefits are good alongside the pension. I receive my financial aid from my father and telling him that I want to change gears once again is scary af.

College was so fun I think about it at least once a day. I think college is still highly necessary. I wrote tons of essays for scholarship foundations and had most of my schooling paid for. YOU CAN go to school without the burden of financial pressure. Don't let others tell you its a bad move. Make the decision yourself. I'd say double up - get a college degree and build an entrepreneurial front at the same time. You can do it!

Currently in my senior year at college, but currently have an extension which could keep at college for two more years, looking forward to dropping out after and doing something better after this year.
The absolute racket college is these days is 🤮. We used to try and buy used books for our class from previous semester students but professors weren’t getting their cut so they required that we buy a new book w QR code attached, in order to register for the class.

Im watching this in my 1st semester into my bachelors in nursing. Im 38 yo ive been a MA since 2010. I became an MA to make more money doing what I love and im pursuing my MSN to I can be nurse anesthetist. I want to help people and I want to make money doing it. My degree is going to take 8-10 years and cost me 40k a yr. I need to figure out what to do now cuz you sold me on that walk as well.

I'm often asked to young folks about college and I have found it increasingly difficult to endorse the path. Your path provides a framework to navigate those conversations.

I think practically speaking, inexpensive college is the biggest factor for upward mobility for most people. Hormozi has been beyond helpful across the board, but this trend of Billionaires telling the poor that college won't help, can really come off as classist and gatekeeping of knowledge and wealth. The future big businesses are via Medicine/Engineering/Software/etc entrepreneurship. Instead the advice should be to do both. Suffer while you're young and work and learn and put in minimum 80hrs a week total. Do an ikigai exercise, make a list of 10 things that work for you, figure the top 3 that are accessible to you, pick one, and then make that you're living breathing purpose, the reason why you're drinking coffee and why you sleep early; dopamine detox everything else and make that purpose you're biggest dopamine engine. Try to work towards an industry that has high dividends and high upside, like programming, sales, etc.
can we all just imagine what it would be like having this man as a mentor and neighbour at age 18...
Priceless pearls of advice in here. I urge young people to be careful with the college debt trap. There are millions of ways to create value for the world. Learn these skills, you won’t learn them in college anyways.

It is my chose to not go to college, I was looked down and people say it is a waste but I choose to chase my dream. at 15 I learned skills I am using until now.
Although everything Alex said is absolutely true the biggest takeaway from this video is if you’re going to take the road less traveled you’d be smart to find a mentor. You can do it without a mentor but it will take literally 5-10 times longer. College is a smart idea for anyone if you do it right bc at worst it affords you a backup plan in the event everything goes wrong but if you’re willing to work 10x harder (or have a mentor) you can do it you’re own way
Economics major here from a top Univeristy. Apart from some finance modules (which I could have learned from UA-cam in less than half the time) , nothing I learned was useful in making money , generating income.

And the other thing that’s not mention In the video is most people after graduating college start entry level which means entry level salary. So it’s really not just 4 years wasted it’s more like 6 to 8 years and by that time you are already swimming in so much debt that you end up back with your parents. My parents hated me dropping out of college but I stayed true to my vision and at 25 I was making 250k a year and doing more then a million dollars in sales annually.

The problem with this video is he is using averages, community college is way cheaper, and there are scholarships and pell grants that make the cost much lower. College is also a great way to find out what you do and do not like and gives you time to mature....

Man! My 18 year old daughter just graduated high school and was going into real estate because I tell all 3 of my kids that college is unnecessary for almost all occupations these days. Education is essential, experience is the master teacher especially when guided by a good mentor.
I have a master's degree so I'm speaking against what I was taught almost 3 decades ago. My daughter decided she wanted to go to college now. She applied and got accepted and she texted me to tell me. This video dropped the next day 😳...lol.
She has to make her own decisions, but I feel like it's the wrong one for what SHE WANTS TO DO.

I’m one of those people that never had a particular interest or passion, so I never went to college. I just wanted to make money and live in peace. It is, however, discouraging to see my friend cheat his way through his degree and make more money than me within 4 months of graduating when I been working toward a higher income for the last 10 years. The idea of spending 4 years of my life buying a higher income feels so wrong, and even if it will potentially net me more money in the future, that’s 4 years of my life I will never get back pursing something as superficial as a degree that brings me no joy.
The only positive thing I can think of (in my situation) by having degree is not feeling that pressure anymore to get a degree, as it just never goes away.
