    I have had a veiled chameleon for around 4 years now and watching your videos has helped me so much. When I first got my chameleon I did a lot of research, but am learning that it was a lot of misinformation. Your videos have really helped me better understand the species and make changes to my chameleons living situation.

      That's a hard video for me to make since most instances require vet treatment. I'd also be nervous about people commenting about near-death issues with their chameleons where there's not much I can do as a person on the internet. 😥 The #1 way to prevent chameleon sickness is to have correct husbandry especially UVB (ua-cam.com/video/5RVjgaLsWn8/v-deo.html) and supplements (ua-cam.com/video/nLONCW9tSPA/v-deo.html).

    My veiled chameleon is about 14 months old. I was using the incorrect lighting system up to two months ago. My set up is not what you recommend but this is the best I could do for now until I move to a bigger apartment. My screened cage is 18“ x 18“ x 36“. My UVB light is called Zilla slimline tropical fixture and It includes tropical 25 UVB T8 and is 18 inches long. The fixture has a plastic lens over the light I know from watching your videos that the UVB cannot penetrate glass and I’m guessing plastic too. I removed the lens. Was that the right thing to do? I think it came with the lens because it shows a picture over the fixture over an 18 inch long glass fish tank type tank with a open top with no screen. I think it’s made this way so nothing could get into the light fixture like small Anoles lizards. I do have the correct heat bulb.

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think the plastic was meant to be taken off. I'd suggest using a 10/12% bulb if you are using a T8 fixture since they aren't as powerful as the T5s.

      That's a great size! I would use a 24" fixture which will hold a 22" bulb. You can find those here: docs.google.com/document/d/1sAESGOC5N8sU1Sv6d4ln5UELk35ycCeNL9vy-EcxNoY/edit?usp=sharing

      If it's warm enough outside you can take him outside for some natural UVB. I'd make sure he is able to get close to the compact UVB but he really does need a T5 HO UVB. I know Amazon sells them pretty cheap. Here is my video on what to expect when you bring a new chameleon home: ua-cam.com/video/2IESxfzFnmc/v-deo.html

    • @NeptunetheChameleon

      A T8 is definitely better than a compact bulb, but it is older technology than the T5. From what I know, a T8 10.0 is similar to a T5 5.0.

    So could I use a T5 10.0 for my veiled chameleon since they come from the dry desert mountains

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  3 роки тому

      Not if you want to place is directly on top of the enclosure. A T5 10.0 would produce too much UVB for a 48" tall enclosure for a veiled chameleon. I would still recommend a T5 5.0 if you do not own a solar meter. Nope as long as you use a 24"x24"x48" enclosure. If you use a smaller enclosure (which is not needed) then you'd need to raise the T5 HO 5.0/6% bulb above the top of the cage to give you the correct gradients.

    Hello! I read on one of the Facebook chameleon groups that the uvb light and hood should run diagonal on the top of the cage. Is this something I should do? Thanks! My enclosure is 40 inches wide so the hood would have be huge in order for it to reach each diagonal end. Just curious, thank you!

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  2 роки тому

      The strength and type of UVB bulb is what is most important. As long as the UVB runs across the length of the enclosure, you're okay. It doesn't matter if it is horizontal or diagonal. I'd be cautious of following advice from Facebook groups -- they're not always giving the best advice.
