Alanis, as a longtime Jalopnik reader I am so happy to see you here! This was a great video, I am so happy for your success and look forward to seeing more videos like this. Cheers!
This is easily the most entertaining and informative auto review I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched an absurd amount of Rivian reviews specifically, but some how I learned and laughed more here than all the others combined. Fantastic Job.
My current dream cars are the Aptera (if it ever really comes out) or a Rivian. Gas cars are fine but I can’t think of one that ticks more boxes for me or would be more fun or convenient to own than an Aptera or a Rivian.
It’s a good color, but Subaru did a study a few years ago and revealed that their forest green cars get hit much more than their other colors, even black. Forest green is the hardest to see, apparently.
Going by the analytics, I am clearly not the only person who just enjoys watching Alanis in the Cargo Tunnel, over and over. She is just so happy and energetic, it really makes my day. It also makes me feel a little old to know that I'm older than her and don't have as much energy.
The BIGGEST deal breaker for me is the 1 piece rear panel & roof panel.. 1 scratch on the rears, or 1 rear end could totaled the whole thing... $50% premium increase is not fun.
I’m completely biased because I have a Rivian R1T, but I loved this review. Great job Alanis. I think the “play” in the steering has a lot to do with the all terrain tires. With the 22” wheels, I think the steering is quite sharp and hands down the best I’ve felt in a truck. I have a few complaints about the Rivian, as I have with any vehicle I’ve ever driven (I was crushed with how much I hated a Ferrari 458 on city streets), but the Rivian is still the best truck on the market today. I hope the R2T/S is great, but I welcome some formidable competition. I’d love to see other trucks worth owning that offer what Rivian does.
Fun video. A couple back seat things that are awesome that I can't remember if you mentioned. If you lift up the back seat you have storage under it. There is a regular 110 plug back there and two more usb-c plugs in the backs of the head rests.
It's been a long time since I've darkened the door at a Chili's restaurant. When I lived in Texas, I would always get their Frito Chili Pie. Fantastic (-: I don't think it's on their menu anymore )-; Correct me if I'm wrong.
Everyone bears the cost of repairs when it comes to insurance premiums. If the insurance companies start losing money they will realize everyone’s rates.
I'm worried about cost of ownership, but has nothing to do with damage repair. Currently own a Tesla, and it has been by far the highest cost to maintain of any vehicle I've ever owned. And that includes Mercedes S class and exotic imports. The reason it is so expensive is that they have a 100% monopoly on service, they refuse to sell parts to anyone else, they refuse to let anyone else have access to the software, you have to take it to them. That has resulted, predictably, in the highest shop rates in the industry, the most expensive parts in the industry, and the slowest repair times in the industry. Couple that with their notoriously poor build quality, and you get a very expensive vehicle to maintain once the warranty is over. While I do believe that rivian is going to be higher quality build, I also see them following in Tesla's footsteps in every other way. That's bad. And it is for that reason that I won't buy one. If every little thing that goes wrong on the truck costs thousands of dollars to fix, and must be fixed by rivian themselves, then the total cost of ownership will be through the roof just like it is with the Tesla.
So, I'm a pick-up guy, I do lots of outdoorsie stuff! Can you haul a boat or a trailer with an atv and your camping stuff with this truck? I travel 450-500 miles one way to hunt, can I do that as well? Charging stations are rare in my neck of the woods. Other than being fast, what are the benifits of owning this vehicle? I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, I want to see how practicle this truck is. Can I continue my lifestyle with the Rivian?
Unfortunately, the reason I won't buy one of these is Tesla. Not because I would buy a Tesla, I own one now, and will never again buy anything from them as long as I shall live. But because Tesla has shown me the pitfalls of the direct to consumer, vertically integrated, business model. When you cannot go anywhere else for service, When you cannot buy parts anywhere else, and when they control 100% of the software, including forced updates. The results are sadly predictable; The highest repair costs in the industry, the longest delays for repairs, extremely poor customer service, and a complete lock into their ecosystem. As all rivians are still under warranty, it's not yet 100% clear how rivian will fare long term, however from what I can see so far, they're following in Tesla's footsteps far too closely for my liking. My next vehicle will 100% be electric. It will also be from a legacy automaker with a built-out dealer network, parts availability, shop manual availability, and Android Auto. I'm willing to change my mind if a startup demonstrates that they believe in third-party repair, but so far, that does not seem to be the case.
Third-party repair will unfortunately be the thing of the past as most people don't know/care about Right To Repair. I'm finding most consumers ignorant to everything and only follow trends/like whatever the media tells them to like. A family member once told me how awesome an electric car is because you won't have to replace a motor when it goes bad...I had to ask would she rather replace a $2K-3K motor or $17K-$20K batteries. Of course the media leaves that part out since they're trying to convince us to buy those things.
@@DavidC.-yw4sg it only takes owning a Tesla where you don't have that option, to very quickly start caring. When you get horrible service, at the highest costs in the industry, and with the longest delays, you very quickly see that it's because you have no other option that they can treat you that way. People may not care about right to repair, but they do care about having competition in the repair space.
The only problem with the Rivian is that if you use it as a truck it doesn't do very well. Rivian gave a rancher his money back after multiple breakdowns and other problems.
Rivian is tops in my opinion. Great company, brand and EV’s. The best part is that the company is just getting started and things will only get better.

@@carsandbidsI think you might want to research that more thoroughly, there are many videos on here talking about that exact problem, and the $40,000 repair bills for very minor damage.
My 2017 Mercedes had their Vegan leather option called "Artico". After 4yrs it was falling apart. The edge of the drivers seat was destroyed. All the dealer would say was "Yeh, they kinda do that".
Because it’s a used vehicle. Used vehicles being more expensive than new was a short-term supply-chain thing. This is normal for everything except actual rare investment vehicles like Doug’s collection. The old joke was “a vehicle lost half its value the instant you drive it off the lot.” 1 year old with low miles? 66% of MSRP is normal. And MSRP went up. Many of the earliest vehicles are being sold for nearly what their original paid price was.
Reliability is questionable. Not a lot in the media, but there’s a good bit frustrated owners. Lots of trucks with 5k or less miles (like this green one) for sale as well. You’d think if they were that great then people who have them wouldn’t be so quick to sell.
@@bwofficial1776It's not about the battery capacity, most 10-year-old EVs have lost only around 5% of their capacity, it's a non-issue in a 1 to 2-year-old vehicle. The reason for the steep drop, is that the government mandates a drop the instant it's a used vehicle. They give you thousands of dollars to buy a new one, that immediately gets subtracted from the price of a used one. If the difference is less than the tax credit, why on earth would I buy the used one instead of the new one? So you have to add the amount of the tax credit, to the normal depreciation that any vehicle gets, and then you actually see that the EVs tend to be depreciating less than a lot of other vehicles.
I agree, what she describes is not play at all, and in fact as she turns the wheel back and forth to demonstrate the play, you can see through the window that the truck is swerving slightly as she does that!

I've heard that Rivian will start selling these, in right hand drive in the UK in early 2024. They're gonna be excellent on our roads! And they're not gonna be sooo big like other pick-up trucks that are imported from the US! Can't wait to see one!
Most Ford F-150's weigh under 5,000 lbs. The Rivan weighs 7,200 lbs!!!! More wear on the road, more expensive tires. Can parking garages support the weight?
Yes. There are 6000-7000 pound ICE pickups and SUVs. More expensive tires, yes. As most luxury and performance vehicles have. If you want cheaper, get an F-150 Lightning. Takes the same tires as an ICE F-150.
@@Hubjeep Well, Rivian can haul and tow more than a base F-150, so the comparison is good. Truck classifications don’t mean anything any more. If the only change Rivian made was to give it a 6.5’ bed, it would be an F-250 competitor.
I can’t get enough of these. I wasn’t interested in an EV until Rivian came along, and they’re the top of my shopping list if new ICE cars are truly banned in the future.
Get back to me in twenty years and let’s do how many are still on the road. Still lots of Chevy, Fords and Toyotas that age that are still going strong.
Rivian changed the game by doing the most to give EV's a horrible reputation for reliability. They are near the top for most unreliable vehicle of any type.

Mercedes has been using fake leather (MB-Tex) in the C, E, M, & GL class cars for decades. Over 60% of their cars (by sales volume) have it and most people can't tell it's not leather. It wears better than leather does. I don't know how good Rivian's fake leather is but it's certainly possible to do fake leather right.
MB fake leather is called “Artico”. MB-tex is what it says on the tin (it is textile, the houndstooth pattern, to be precise). Then there is leather and finally, there used to be “Pullman” textile, which was velvet-like.
@@johnhopkins4920 MB-Tex and Artico are two names for the same thing. In the US market it's called MB-Tex, in many other markets it's called Artico. I'd only ever heard it called MB-Tex before, had never heard of Artico before googling it just now.
I've never seen any reason that you shouldn't do that in a rivian, It's Tesla that had so much issue with Frunk creases due to their notoriously abysmal build quality.

I've heard that Rivian will start selling these, in right hand drive in the UK in early 2024. They're gonna be excellent on our roads! And they're not gonna be sooo big like other pick-up trucks that are imported from the US! Can't wait to see one!
Exciting!
It's hard to appreciate the truck when Alanis is standing next to it looking so good!
Coomer
This guy really has a good taste
Most Ford F-150's weigh under 5,000 lbs. The Rivan weighs 7,200 lbs!!!! More wear on the road, more expensive tires. Can parking garages support the weight?
Yes. There are 6000-7000 pound ICE pickups and SUVs. More expensive tires, yes. As most luxury and performance vehicles have. If you want cheaper, get an F-150 Lightning. Takes the same tires as an ICE F-150.
@@AnonymousFreakYT I was being generous comparing it to an F-150. Rivian is a mid size truck. A Tacoma weighs 4,000 - 4,550 lbs.
@@Hubjeep Well, Rivian can haul and tow more than a base F-150, so the comparison is good. Truck classifications don’t mean anything any more. If the only change Rivian made was to give it a 6.5’ bed, it would be an F-250 competitor.
@@AnonymousFreakYTHow far can it tow that payload….I rest my case.
The worse Elon Musk acts the better Rivian is just wish they used the NACS plug!
I can’t get enough of these. I wasn’t interested in an EV until Rivian came along, and they’re the top of my shopping list if new ICE cars are truly banned in the future.
You're weird, I love your presentations. Who would see a hole and say I can fit in there. 🤪🤣 🙃
Thank you!
Get in the frunk!
Get back to me in twenty years and let’s do how many are still on the road. Still lots of Chevy, Fords and Toyotas that age that are still going strong.
Alanis is the type of girl to pet a tree like an animal
Great review Alanis! One note though, it is not a big vehicle in the truck world
I own a 2009 Elantra love to see you in the Elantra gang! 🎉
Rivian changed the game by doing the most to give EV's a horrible reputation for reliability. They are near the top for most unreliable vehicle of any type.
Got sources on that?
@@Jono. Know how to Google?
@@Jono. God, you’re so brainless!!! You can’t even figure out how to google “Rivian least reliable???” How are you able to type on your mom’s phone from her basement without a brain???? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

lol i love your reviews!!
Glad you like them!
Thank you!
Tesla would be a better truck but they forgot to put a battery in it .go Rivian set an example
How is this a truck while a real truck is a semi-truck😂 american logic
This company has an amazing future
They can use wood but they can't use real leather.
Alanis will likely never review a car which is as quirky as she is.
Nope no Dougy no watchy
Alanis the type of gal who does check her blinker fluid before every trip
OH she grabbed the hood to close the front trunk NOOOO
I've never seen any reason that you shouldn't do that in a rivian, It's Tesla that had so much issue with Frunk creases due to their notoriously abysmal build quality.
She is cute! I want to follow her
