i don't get it , shouldn't you be speaking more mandarin with your kids and teach them to read Chinese ? Neither of the parents are native English speakers and both parents know mandarin, but the kids seem to only respond in English. How are they gonna survive in the chinese school system?

if you're living in environments that everyone speak one certain language you will grow to being able to speak one. I'm chinese indonesian both my parents teach me English since i was a baby so that i can speak English decently. My indonesian is alright cause all of my friend speak indonesian and they taught mandarin at school too. I think what they do to their kids is just giving an environment where their kids can develop an ability to speak another language other than what they got at school.
