It was his responsibility as captain to take the last letter and dog tags home to the widows left behind by the men under his command. He's such an amazing man. He obviously finds writing his song to be cathartic. When you've been through so much you have to find a way to offload all the grief, and he does it so beautifully.
That isn't at all true. A lovely sentiment but utter nonsense. The families of the lost men under his command did not receive their final letter or dog tags from him... that was the responsibility of the MOD. He did however feel that it should have been him.
I have heard this song probably 100 times but never saw the video. As a vet that has delivered the devastating news to family members this videos has me in tears
As a young corporal in the early '70's in the British Army I accompanied our Captain to carry out this duty to a grieving mother, even as we stepped out of our vehicle we could hear the loud "Nooo" coming from inside her house. This was the THIRD and youngest son she had lost whilst serving. I'm 72 now but never forgot this moment. We went to the next pub on first name terms, tosted the 'fallen' with a double whisky, but back at the baracks it ws 'Sir' again, and when I saluted him thereafter he new too that I wasn't just saluting the rank he carried.
As an aging ex squaddie that's done his bit for Queen and Country many years ago!! You know exactly what the song is about, we've all sat and wrote that letter and asked that friend to carry you home x
Blunt’s Carry You Home is a tribute to the soldiers who sacrifice their lives for their country and the lyrics are a tribute to their loved ones who are left to grieve their loss. The song also highlights the importance of cherishing the love and relationships we have in our lives and reminds us that in the face of adversity, love is what keeps us going.
I think he uses music as a catharsis. He was a Captain in a cavalry regiment deployed to Kosovo, as a tank commander it was a job that he had to do, for those who were killed. His song No Bravery also shows what he feels. There is an interesting story when he was instructed to take the airport in Pristina, Kosovo by a NATO commander which was being held by the Russians at the time. He demonstrates sanity when it comes to war unlike many and evidently understands the reality of it. From what was said he refused and was then backed up by the British Commander, and an agreement was reached with the Russians without the senseless loss of life which would have resulted had they simply tried to take the airport. It would have meant a confrontation between Russia and NATO, and many more of those letters being taken back home.
I love James Blunt. His gentle voice, his gift of writing is so over whelming, I can only say Thank you God for giving this young man such gifts. I am 90 years of age and it has taken this long for me to find such gifts in songs, with so much love in his voice. How wonderful to hear an Angel with such beautiful words. ❤
You got me snot-bubbling again. The dichotomy of his gentle/tender songwriting and his valour as a military officer is extraordinary. A powerful example of this combination is “No Bravery”, it speaks more to the atrocities and injustice of war than the personal grief in Monster and Carry You Home. I recommend for your next foray into James Blunt.
@@lizfox6854 I don't know where in the World you are, but we've seen him in France on each occasion. Twice at Carcassonne (a lovely intimate venue of about 3500 seats) and once at Albi. France is generally much cheaper for concerts than the UK. We've seen George Ezra twice here, both times in Paris. One 1200 places at le Trainon and the other 6000 at Belancourt. Never paid more than €50, with cheapest tickets €35. Going to see Tom Jones in July at Carcassonne (not a great fan, but he's been around for years). €45.
Never heard this one before, a tragically beautiful peice of song writing, no doubt framed by his experiences as a military officer. He gets a lot of stick for his music but he is a brilliant twitterist and gives some fantastic responses... Top man all round... even for a Rupert! (An affectionate term for officer in the British army!)
"The Girl That Never Was" was written by Blunt, George Tizzard and Rick Parkhouse. It was written about Blunt and his wife losing a child through miscarriage. I've been lost my own "rainbow baby" and it's absolutely everything i could say myself.
when i was in the army i was ordered to carry a coffin of a soldier into church. i was selected because of my hieght. believe me its not true to say he aint heavy.. its a sad day. for every one. this song reminds me of that day.
It’s a action that played out daily during the war on terrorism. I served 15 years as a Para Rescuman in the Air Force and retired in 93 after the first gulf war. I lost two friends and had promised to deliver a letter to a family member and one of their dog tags. It’s never easy but when you make a promise you honor you teammates. Bless you both.
I don't mind if you cry or not GInger and if you are more stoic Mike, that is OK too. What is special about James is his plaintive voice that brings a true reality about his true life experiences...that is what you are connecting to. I cried through watching 'Monsters' and this one, about returning a soldier's possessions to a loved one, also made me cry....yet it is something that not all of us will experience and James' words make it special. Thanks for playing it.
Like James, I'm a retired military officer and a Brit (Seriously Mike? 'Limeys'. In the 21st Century? LOL). But I'm with Ginger on this; My first listening of Monsters had me bawling and this one also made me tearful. I think the song itself, much as I love James songs, doesn't necessarily give you that feeling but, combined with the vid it gives a very clear and poignant meaning to the title in particular. I like your vids - keep on doing what you do.
James is probably my guilty pleasure being a bit of a metal head, try goodbye my lover, just a beautiful song with lyrics that really connect with you if you have loved and lost
Love James Blunt, love his unique distinct voice, I’ve been listening to him before his song Monsters got viral. Love his sense of humor he is very funny and underrated
Next one to check out is "You're Beautiful". James is a superb songwriter and performer....and if you look into who is outside music, he is also a hero, joker and good bloke.
The dog tags reminds me of when I was in the UK forces.I joined on the 14th Sept 1966 to be a mechanic,I did it and became a class1 mechanic and a full corporal,I did 18+ yrs
Lost my mum 8 years ago suddenly from a heart attack. She was only 48. Every time I hear this song. It always remembers me of her. She wasn't just my mother but my best friend. Remember at first I use to lay awake and pray that I could swap places. It's scary how James can sing with such a magnitude to be able to make you cry.
I can't believe (after checking your UA-cam videos that I can't find any reactions to Enya, please, please listen to this beautiful lady, she lives in a castle in Ireland and her voice, the lyrics and music are so evocative, what can I say, it's absolutely sublime, ethereal, and otherworldly. She was previously in a group called Clannad (which I'm sure you may have heard of if not (I suggest reacting to their music) you may or may not remember her music but it's most notable for being the soundtrack for all the Lord of the rings music & Gladiator, you really need to listen to her, any track would be fine & you'll be hooked for life, she's that special. I personally can't get enough of this beautiful lady.
Beautiful reaction again guys. Have you ever heard or listened to Mumford & Sons? They have so many great songs you could react to but my personal fave is Tompkins Square Park, its a live Vevo performance. X
I honestly believe that James Blunt would do exactly what he did in the video in real life, He has possibly has, he just seems like he'd be that person to do it. Great reaction guy's.
Wow, you guys have a huge fan base. Don't know how to make my comment stand out above the rest. This is probably the 3rd video of yours that I'm watching. The first was James Blunt's "Monsters." I started watching people's reactions to the song because I too was really touched by that song. I lost my father as well. It was a beautiful song. I started playing it on my piano as well. But to me, what's even more beautiful was Ginger's sincere and natural reaction to the song. Not only is she a very very lovely young lady, but her reaction causes a chain reaction. Seeing her touched and crying makes me emotional as well. Because we're all human and it shows that we all can relate to one another. Anyway, I just wanted to say that and say thank you. Don't even know if this comment will reach your eyes...lol. Anyway...I might just want to recommend another James Blunt song...."Goodbye my Lover. Be well.
Im a Retired British Soldier when i was in Afghanistan we wrote letters to be sent home if it went bad so i know all about what James is talking about in this song, My Regiment had a permanent honour guard detail for military funerals and i spent 6 months on it we would practice 2 times a week with the hope that we would never have to carry out our duty unfortunatly my detail had to do 3 honour guards in 5 weeks each one was painful as we all knew the guys being buried it wears you down thats why we only did 6 months per detail.
If you want to cry then Routine by Steven Wilson is a must watch. A different side of Mr. Wilson than his Porcupine Tree days. Plus the animation by Jess Cope is truly amazing.
When a soldier deploys on operations, they usually write THAT letter to their loved ones that they hope will never have to be opened. My brother kept my letter more than once and dreaded the responsibility. Sadly, a lot of these letters have been delivered.
There is another James !James Arthur, and he has a beutiful song as well "Falling Like The Stars" its also military, and beutiful! I hope Mike& Ginger react to it!
My understanding is that Blunt wrote this in honour of one of the soldiers in his command who was killed, I think in Kosovo. In this case, it was a young American woman and he promised her when she was dying that he would take her body back to her parents in the US. So in this case he actually did accompany her and “carried her home.” There are lyrics that only make sense when you realize this. He sings about them “…all being pretty in New York city…” and “…someone’s little girl is taken from the world tonight.” He doesn’t talk about this, and I think the video was shot this way deliberately to distance it from the actual event it is based on. They had not intended to include the scenes of fighting but it happened that there was a company on maneuvers very close to the filming site in England.
True art elicits an emotional response; the better the art the stronger the feeling. There is no shame in tears. Music (and many movies) effect me to tears. This is why artists make such crappy political activists and pundits. This is a lovely song.
I suggest 2 songs from him No bravery this is about his time in the army/war all the profits go to the help for heroes and the greatest all the profits go to the NHS
No tears may be a bit much to ask, but Unstoppable is quite upbeat and the official video may even make you smile, showing as it does James self deprecating sense of humour when it comes to how some people react to him. For something completely different I would suggest Lone Digger by Caravan Palace, the official animated one. Definitely gets a WTF! from quite a few people the first time they see it. Best wishes.

As an aging ex squaddie that's done his bit for Queen and Country many years ago!! You know exactly what the song is about, we've all sat and wrote that letter and asked that friend to carry you home x
God bless and thank you for your service 🇬🇧
James filmed the soldiers used in this video, while on active duty in Kosovo. He’s a wonderful soul, and one of our national treasures 🏴🇬🇧

Must be the hardest job for a soldier is to carry home the affects of a fallen brother or sister to their loved ones. It is also the most important .
HE AN OFFICER AND SOLDIER HE ALSO A MAN WITH A BIG HEART.
Captain James Blunt making music. 👍🏻

The man knows how to write a song. Beautiful and sad. Good one guys
So powerful 😢 i always cry like a baby ❤ such a beautiful heartfelt song 🎵 best song he ever made in my opinion
Gets me as well. Seen him live three times. You go to dance, sing and have fun and yet I'll cry several times at his songs. A brilliant wordsmith.
3 times?!?!?! I'd die happy seeing his beautiful soul just once. I've loved him since I was in 7th grade and I'm now 31 years old!!!

I’m a 72 year old man,and it gets me every time,God bless Forces personnel,
James is a cherished service man from my country and he was a tank commander and witnesses horrors in Bosnia
This song was based on real life events.
He blew me away when he blasted into the scene in the uk , his songs are so deep and meaningful . His
Bonfire heart won’t make you cry. It’s uplifting
Beautiful. He is a great singer/ Songwriter. Just brilliant.

You should react to James Blunt , Goodbye my lover, high or 3 wise men! So many good songs and he gives his all emotionally for all performances
His song, “same mistake” won’t make you cry, but it’s a great uplifting progression towards the end. Try it
I agree. It’s a fantastic song.
Love it too. And three wisemen.

you did it good lots of respect
Such a beautiful song and sad video. I loved it so much, I sang it on my channel
I don't listen to this song in public due to bawling risks.
Carry you home " Excelente''
For a happier and upbeat James Blunt song, try "Stay the Night". It's good.
He did it to me too Ginger....damn it James........

Mike shouldn't have got any shit for Monsters, that's crazy. We all deal with sadness different ways. You do your own thing mate.
Thanks for your video. Another demolishing song by James Blunt is "No Bravery" live.
“God dammit he did it to me again” 😂
Hi to you both, this is my first ever request can you play BEDSHAPED BY KEANE love from the U.K?
When a soldier deploys on operations, they usually write THAT letter to their loved ones that they hope will never have to be opened. My brother kept my letter more than once and dreaded the responsibility. Sadly, a lot of these letters have been delivered.
please keep reacting to James Blunt vidoes , I would recommend Goodbye My lover
If you want one that won’t make you cry, try “Halfway”- James Blunt happy song 😉
Wisemen wont make you cry. :)
Beautiful couple. Mike and Ginger good luck from the UK
Thank you
First time watching one of your reactions. Really liked it. I heve one question. Where do you life, because I heard the cicadas
So in this case he actually did accompany her and “carried her home.”
There are lyrics that only make sense when you realize this. He sings about them “…all being pretty in New York city…” and “…someone’s little girl is taken from the world tonight.”
He doesn’t talk about this, and I think the video was shot this way deliberately to distance it from the actual event it is based on.
They had not intended to include the scenes of fighting but it happened that there was a company on maneuvers very close to the filming site in England.
Try Goodbye my lover..it is also a beautiful moving song.
Great Reaction Video 😊👍
Your Next James Blunt Reaction should be to "If Time is All I Have". 😉
Capt Blunt does it again
True art elicits an emotional response; the better the art the stronger the feeling. There is no shame in tears. Music (and many movies) effect me to tears. This is why artists make such crappy political activists and pundits. This is a lovely song.
I take my hat of to the military and police that has to come to a home bearing the bad news. I dont EVER want to be in there shoes.
Covid sucks this was the one thing i couldn't do was to carry my mum home breaks my heart every time i hear this song
Love you guys!
Love you back! ♥️

Goodbye My Lover ….. will have you sobbing for sure
would love you to react to goodbye my lover by james blunt, its a great song
not sure James Blunt has ever been called devastating
Nice saw him live 2 weeks ago, marvelous voice. I suggest Famous Final Scene by Bob Seger..👍
Bet you didn't see the end coming.
James Blunt has several songs that reduce me to a blubbering mess.

When Ginger loses it.
You really need to do a reaction to someone you loved, and before you go by lewis capaldi (the official videos) they are very emotional, thank you, there's also another song by Ed sheeran called supermarket flowers, another really sad song
You're just a beautiful person Ginger, it's a beautifully sad song 😢
Thank you ❤️ - G
Another great one.
Out off interest, that last bit filmed at St Aldhems head in Dorset.
"No Tears" is good and emotional but not so sad.
I got an epic one for y'all to react to....it is a cover of the famous Elvis Presley song " Can't Help Falling In Love " sung by a Russian girl named Diana Ankudinova.
