      There is a kind of MRI that you can do when you are still very much alive and well that gives you an x-ray-like photo of your insides, showing what your body's composition is like, like when you see the rings of a tree stump. No need to look at corpses.

    So, this particular message is untrue - at least when talking about this being a reason it is harder to lose fat. In truth, heavier people, regardless of by fat or muscle, require more calories to maintain that mass. (Muscle requires more calories than fat, but both require calories.) Further, it takes more energy to regulate temperature than any help from insulation in most modern environments humans are in regularly.
    That is not to say that the intent of the message is wrong, just that this isn’t the mechanism.

      You seem to be saying that the thermal effect that fat offers is only a part of what it requires to stay warm.
      No argument here I simply don’t know but the author would be correct in the main unless you are implying that added fat insulation is a small or insignificant part of the what the body needs to stay warm.

      @@etiennetaylor if you take the author’s argument, it would suggest that fat people need fewer calories to survive. The opposite is the case - fat people require more calories to maintain their weight.
      There are many reasons why it is difficult to lose weight, but the author’s argument is not one.

      @@ibsulon I don’t know quite enough to come firmly down on anyone’s side. I was intrigued by Scott’s post because I’d not heard of the phenomenon before.

      @@ibsulon I think that Scott’s premise rests on the idea that fat people at least when in calorie deficit consume some stored body fat in addition to the calories they consume through eating.

      Fat isn’t an neutral insulator, if you’ve ever touched body fat, you realize that all fat is body temperature, so it requires energy to maintain.

    understanding this feedback loop is way better than the perspective that people are lazy, it is a sign of the times, but in a much different way than most think

    Really excellent. (I totally overlooked the thermal effect of fat) *As a former powerlifter I was some 90lbs heavier.

    In a 20°C environment, an average person might expend an extra 50-100 calories per day beyond their BMR to stay warm. This is a rough estimate. You have to be roughly 25 to 35lbs over a "healthy weight" to qualify as obese. This is for the average human. Gender, height, build will impact this. Pegging it in the middle, that's 30lbs a day of additional mass added to locomotion. This will more than make up for the difference unless the person is completely sedentary. A much more concerning feedback loop when it comes to excess body fat is the one that impacts hormones. Leptin, insulin, cortisol, etc. This can lead to increased appetite, reduced satiety ec... Add to that stores filled with poor quality food, and peoples poor understanding of what a healthy diet FOR THEM might be and you have a problem. I feel like you pointed to some low-hanging-fruit as far as variables in obesity are concerned without considering the complexity of the issue. This can lead to people making excuses or hanging their hopes of weight loss on just not putting on a jacket in the fall as a way to lose the weight.

    I can tell you why it's so hard. It's because very few people understand why we get fat in the first place.
    It is not all that hard to lose body fat if you understand what it is. The reality is that fat gain is an evolutionary survival mechanism. Once you understand this fact, you can figure out why we get fat, and reverse the process.
    That is exactly what I did. I realized that most experts, scientists and doctors were looking at obesity from the wrong perspective.
    The big mistake they make is looking at body fat from a scientific lens, instead of an evolutionary point of view.
    Once you make this paradigm change of obesity, you can see what we do as animals to gain fat in the first place.
    Dr. Richard Johnson is the guy who figured out that it's mainly fructose consumption that raises your evolutionary body fat set point to help you survive a famine, just like most animals in nature do...

    That is actually not 100% correct. The heat radiated from the fat person would be greater, due to the increased surface. I think the effect you talk about is relatively minor, if present at all. It's a lot more complicated than that.
    What is much more important, is how your brain regulate appetite. It's done as a combination of signals from your stomach and your body fat deposits. Body fat secretes a hormone called leptin, which also regulates the brains hunger feeling. The more fat, the more leptin and then consequently less hunger. However, when eating highly processed well tasting energy dense food, most people will gain weight, and some to an extent where the brain simply becomes leptin resistent (which is irreversible, once fat, you have lost your leptin sensitivity forever). So fat no longer regulates the hunger as efficient as before. And when you then loose fat on a diet, less leptin is made, and the already leptin resistant brain thinks you are in a hunger situation and makes you incredibly hungry. Very few have the willpower to fight hunger, so eventually they will gain weight again (yoyo weight)
    That is why the glp-1 receptor agonists are so effective, but you have to keep taking them, otherwise the hunger will comeback.

    You stated one pound of fat is approximately 2000 calories. Not even close. It's 3500 calories. Even high school students taken a health class know this. Pathetic mistake. Not credible journalism. NOT TO BE TRUSTED. Was thinking of subscribing. Not anymore Me = (40 years exercise physiologist)

    I disagree.
    How desperate is a person with obesity to want to lose weight and live a better quality of life?
    That is the issue.
    Feedback loop or not, all it takes is to burn more kilocalories than you consume, week in week out, month in month out, year in and year out.

    My 150 lbs of fat does a great job insulating my body. The weirdest thing is when the skin on my belly is cold to the touch even when I feel like I’m hot. I definitely experience sharp temperature contrasts between what I feel internally versus what my skin feels. I was very fit only a few years ago (a classic pandemic fatty), so I notice things about being fat that people who’ve always been fat just take for normal.
    I’ve also noticed that my body warms up significantly after overeating. When I was more disciplined with my eating habits, this never really happened. After devouring an entire pizza, I’ll lay on my bed with a fan on and feel both hot (inside) and cold (on the skin) at the same time.

    This channel has no business commenting on fat loss or the mechanism by which fat remains.
    If this topic truly interests you, you should give the same level of care in your investigation and have sources of data to back up what you are proposing. Having two random body cross sections provides zero evidence for your claims.
    There are studies that have shown that fat accumulation comes down to one thing, excess calories.
    People continue to try to reframe the problem without addressing the elephant in the room. Calories are too plentiful and easy to get. Also, the ones modern humans tend to indulge in are too easy for the body to digest resulting in blood sugar spikes, insulin spikes, and those insulin spikes signal to your body to store fat.
    My post is not to be confused with a deep dive on this subject. I'm just giving you the tip of the iceberg so you can do your due diligence. It has little to nothing to do with body temperature regulation. You seem to ignore larger individuals also have more skin surface area.
    Disappointed with this video.
