I live in Canada but am Latvian. I first heard this song over 25 years ago, and every time I hear it, it pulls at my heart strings and tears are there. Many have said this should be the Latvian anthem, but I still have tears for this and Dievs Svētī Latviju
It is a beautiful song, but an anthem should be a melody that the nation can sing easily. And this is not one of those songs. Dievs svetī Latviju is the best melody for an anthem because you don't need a good singing voice to be able to carry it. I love Pērkons Saule Daugava, but it is more suited for choirs than the whole nation. Both songs are absolutely brilliant❤

Im not Latvian, I dont know this perfect language yet, but when I have heard it at first time, I started to sing with choir. Love from Russia
