- Believe it or not, being the king's Fool was actually a respected position. The life of a jester is more than meets the eye. Yes, they spent a lot of time telling jokes, but they also were an open critic of the monarchy, went to war, and could even talk their way out of execution. In this video we will learn all about the crazy life of a Royal Jester, from the middle ages to the Tudor Era.

Q: whadya call unemployed jester?
A: Nobody’s fool!
To become a true and fully licensed jester one must study for some years at the Academy in Ankh-Morpork.
I never thought I'd see this reference lol
Fake your jesting and I'll report you to Sam Vimes.
I do love that Vicious Mockery (Bards in D&D) comes from a historical point of reference!
Can you imagine the tenuous life of Will Somers (Sommers, Summers) Henry VIII’s fool? His job must’ve been terrifying given how quickly changeable Henry was. One misstep could’ve sent him to the Tower and possibly Tower Hill’s place of public execution. Um, no thanks.
Thankyou for making this video, it was very educational. I never knew their were female Jesters/fools until watching this!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Very interesting :=) I didn't know that jesters accompanied their kings into battle, that's wild! :=). Keep up the good work! :=)
Thank you! That was new info for me too when researching.

Thank you so much!!
That was great. I wonder if there's any history to their hats and the staff that they carry. Was it just part of the outfit or was used like a ventriloquist dummy?
Thank you! Nothing about the staff's specific usage came up in my research, but I have heard that it was in a way supposed to be a parallel to the scepter held by the king.
@@Historidame right... groovy! 👍
Well, now I DEFINITELY need to re-read “Fool” by Christopher Moore!! That book mad me laugh so hard, now I’m excited to remember why!
