I learn a new little trick every time I see one of your videos. This time, it was in how you measure the hollow and the technique in gluing it. I learned a very different, much more cumbersome way, but I will definitely adapt yours. Very well done, and many thanks!

Hello! I am a lover of your videos who really thinks the split board bindings are cool! I was wondering how you actually make the split boards. Do you take normal boards and split them? or is it two boards put together in one side and left split on the other? Thanks so much in advance!
New binder here- I watch your videos multiple times as I go through each process so that I feel I hear your voice in my head as I do each step. Does this type of binding incorporate headbands? I do not recall you mentioning why or why not. Thank you!
The library binding usually does not have headbands. Johnson does mention in the description about the possibility of adding them. However, the cord inside the turn-in which forms the headcap sits right on the textblock, where a headband would be. So they would interfere with each other. I really like the cord in the headcap feature, so it wins over headbands. All the best, Darryn

Mystery solved! Thanks for letting me know. Complex story. When I upload a video I link it to DAS Bookbinding and then maybe do some publicity. But that video had a spurious copyright claim against it. I had to put up a new version with different music. But I wanted to leave the old version up so I could dispute the copyright claim but forgot to update the link. After the claim went in my favour last week I removed the video as not needed any more. But I couldn't work out how people were viewing an unlisted video. Now I know! Link updated and it can also be found from the UA-cam page under the leather binding playlist. Thanks! DAS

Single layer down. Or also described as one-on two-off. Hmmm, you got me, is there a spine stiffener used in this book? A spine stiffener is normally a single layer of thin card attached to the covering material. So I guess after construction the double layer would play that role. Does that make sense? In several of your bindings you utilize hollow tubes and use brown craft paper, are there any special qualities to look for in this paper? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and craft. I took the leap and rebound my first book as a result.
Kraft paper has pros and cons. It is very strong but also gets a bit soft when wet because it absorbs moisture very well. I think I use 110gsm kraft paper. If you can find a strong white paper, then 130gsm would be easier to use. DAS

Yep, you sure can. The only thing is that with the split board attachment there is a significant joint gap, which is incompatible with laced on boards. But then again, especially in the US, springbacks often had false bands added, which have a similar structure. Have fun with it! DAS
If I wasn't doing a split board attachment I'd do a case binding. That is just what I'd do. But you could attach the boards by glueing them directly to the waste sheet instead of inserting it into a split board. DAS

The project went sideways from just reattaching the cover to a complete resew of the signature and new cloth jointed endpapers. I sewed on tapes mostly because I like the look of it. I didn't know or realize there were so many ways to attach covers so I'm just learning as I go. I really appreciate your videos, but it is a lot to learn in a short amount of time with a fair amount of jargon. Learning what the differences are between the different bindings, enpapers, stitching, paste, glue, paper, etc as well as knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each is a lot more complicated (and expensive) than it looks on the face of it. Thanks again I hope my questions aren't too bothersome.
I asked because i know inkjet printer works with inks and this maybe a problem with humidity from glue, while laser printer i think more safe for this situation because works with burn paper. Also i have an extra question about the thickness of the boards. Exists some minimum thickness for library or laced on-boards binding or depending by material leather or cloth ?
For this book I always would. The tapes are fairly thick and I don;t want differential forces in the spine. This book is meant to take years of heavy use. But in other bindings styles and with thin support material I often don't. All the best, Darryn

Would it be possible to make the hollow out of 4 folds so it would be a two-on two-off hollow?
Sure. Or 1 on 3 off? The 2 on will make the spine more ridged. Maybe that is what you are after.

InkJet, but only because I don't have a laser printer, in which case that is what I'd use. All the best, DAS

Is it still necessary to even the tapes if you are applying the tube?

Your kraft paper looks stiffer than what I get here in the UK. What gsm is it?
Finally remembered to check while in the bindery. It's 110gsm. It feels heavier, but kraft paper does feel stiff usually. All the best, Darryn
