To respond to Alex's question - most Lithuanians still remember Soviet Lithuania and ESPECIALLY the pre-EU independent Lithuania, which was, for a lack of a better term, a dumpster fire. We've seen a mountain of progress and we're definitely a country with a bright future, but those heavy memories haven't gone away yet.
That's not even the worst of it, it's people who left in like 2006 talking smack about Lithuania on the internet while sincerely believing in what they say because somehow they end up being mentally stuck in the year that they left and completely ignore the obvious progress, even as they come back for vacations every year. Those cases make me 10 times as mad compared to present day locals complaining about something objective and up-to-date at least. The Lithuania that those people dislike and opted to leave is gone in most cases, but it's still real to them.
I honestly think there's more to it than that. I think Lithuania, as a nation, is in the process of (re)discovering itself. I'm speaking of it's national identity, what makes it unique, what role does it play in the grand scheme of the world, what was its past and where does it see itself in the future. Now looking back, I think I witnessed it growing up during the 90s-10s, when travelled and now living abroad.
Hi, Alex & Elise! Thank you both for sharing your wonderful memories! You both make my days so much brighter and happier. I hope to visit soon in March when Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo is in Vilnius! I hope you see it as well. Wishing you both a great evening. - Maxximo Morabito
If you would go to small cities you would see what everything is already done even better than in Vilnius! And yes renovations are same in all country. Especially in small towns in those renovation is being done way way faster. As they renovating is not road and sidewalk its all infrastructure. Vilnius simply too big, but they renovating everything non stop and will renovate forever :D
that collapsed cafe has to pass its black, where the Vilnius Brigade gathered in 1990-1995 (Criminal group that intimidated the whole of Vilnius, racketeering, murders, explosions and murder of a journalist) the cafe was called "Lakštingala" ( nightingale) 1995-1997 the whole group is destroyed (most are in prison, the leader is executed)
@@LifeinLithuania Type "Sprogieji Devyniasdešimtieji" into the search bar here on UA-cam for a treat. Literally worse than Baghdad. The music for video for Ernestas Sadau's "Vilnius Brigade", too, to instantly increase your appreciation for Lithuania's achievements :D.
@@LifeinLithuania every Lithuanian city had such gangs. everything continued until the killing of prosecutors and police officers began. Then the police took to basically within 10-15 years all the gangs were destroyed. after that time the criminal tries to sit underground. If the police had not done so, we would have an Italian or Russian option where the mafia operates openly. Police took then hard-to-understand actions of constant searches, arrests, swat groups had no rest. Thanks to police coordinated action, we have a relatively safe country. kidnapping is a rare case, the lowest level of teorism in Europe. maximum possible crimes are pickpockets, thefts from cars or apartments (although due to the complicated sale of stolen items, such crimes are unlikely)
Really miss you guys, so great that you do the videos ❤️ absolutely agree with everyone saying Alex sounds great on videos. :) And the manor really looks beautiful, we somehow managed to live 6 years in Vilnius and never see it 🤦♀️
03:29 Yes, i feel exactly the same! When i hear myself talking in some recording, i just hate it :D When you think you sound quite cool and then hear the harsh reality :D But regarding your voice, trust me, you sound cool. Maybe you expected too much from your voice :D
Curb your flattery, Alex, you will spoil us. That thing at 5:24 is a hurricane detector. If the rock moves there probably is a hurricane if it doesn't probably there is none. Sick sk8r skillz btw, Elise
It's a Lithuanian trait to be self deprecating in terms of our country, many people complain a lot how everything is bad and it's better elsewhere. But there is a hidden patriotism there - if any outsider tries to say something bad about our country, then expect some harsh feedback about it :D It's just a thing here I guess
Hi guys, all I wanted to say is that you guys are so cool and as a fellow Lithuanian I’m really happy that you seem to like Lithuania and make amazing videos and instagram posts about it. I actually found your channel while reading comments under ,,Twin Peaks” music video and was surprised to see Lithuanian flag as a profile picture and I checked It and feel in love with your channel! Hope you’ll have the best time here!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful vlog Alex! You should be more confident, because you really sound okay in all the videos😂 btw those stones are abstract art which is very popular in Lithuania
"U" should be pronounced as "U" (French "ou") and "IU" as German ü. You pronounced TrakŲ like TrakIŲ :-) "I" is used as a softness sign here. Example: Langas (window) - L is hard. LIaudis (~folk/nation)- L is soft. When will you visit the Baltic cost? I'd suggest to see Dreverna (There is a video in russian about it), Nida and of course Palanga. You can buy a house in Dreverna for 400k€+ with a parking for you yacht :-)

@@LifeinLithuania One of my favourites too!
Lithuania is what America used to be in the 70’s (patriotic/safe/family orientated),
but with super fast internet. :)

You are very handsome and have beautiful voice!
Ah yes! Why do so many Lithuanians undervalue their country??
