I am from as Far East in England as you can get, but up till a few years back I had never seen a 'live' Bison anywhere. I found by accident a farm some distance from here that did Bed & Breakfast catering. So the wife and I visited for a couple of days. They were a commercial concern with an on-site Abattoir, and a modest shop selling the Bison meat. That also had a Red Deer herd. I loved the entire visit, they had about 180 Bison all over, so I got to be almost over stuffed with them, but it certainly intrigued me. I am now retired from engineering, so I envy your youth, and the proximity to 'wild' Bison. I love them, possibly as much as you, but circumstance is different in Merry England. I love sort of living the life through your video's, so keep them up, and good luck to you all over there....... Great video! So, the north American bison is my favorite land mammal. I am saving money for land so I can start my own bison ranch. I want to help the bison stay strong. They are beautiful creature's. Any good pointers on how to care fully for them?
Well, there's a lot that goes into starting. The thing that helps me the most is spend time with them. They need to know who you are and how much you care about them. That has been the biggest factor raising ours. Especially when it comes to working them, they change when you pin them up and corner them. If you are passionate and really love these animals, then you will be fine.
I have a couple quick questions for you. How many acres of grassland do you need per adult Bison? Are there types of grass they just wouldn't eat? Can you mix smaller animals like sheep or goats in the same pasture? Are there any books you would recommend on raising Bison? Thanks!
Acres depends on where you are located and how much grass is available. We can do about 3-4 acres per head of bison. They'll eat just about any grass...they prefer native over other types like bermuda. Not suppose to mix the two...sheep and goats can carry a disease that can spread to bison and kill them.
I know dairy cows and I presume beef cattle also require hoof clipping or trimming, I don’t really know though, but do Bison require the same sort of grooming on their hoofs?
Cross Timbers Bison fantastic. One less expense! And interesting to know how hardy these beasts are! I guess they don’t really walk around their wet filth and mud all the time too like most other cattle! It might be a pipe dream but I dream about raising bison or some other game animal like elk, pheasant or quail. I see one of your bison using the tree for scratching post , i’ll suggest going to a street sweeping company and see about getting some of their older use brooms , put a steel post set in concrete some where out in field for the bison to use as a scratching post , bet all those bristles will feel pretty good to the bison and it will also help in grooming the long shaggy hair…… just something to think 🤔 about. You might want to think about setting up two or three more of the scratching post if the first one works out.

Oh yeah! They are born to graze!!
How much it take to start up a bison ranch ?
Are your bison "beefalo" or do you have a mix of hybrid and more pure animals? Some of the animals look kinda cowish? Just curious, ive heard about "beefalo" and im serious about the differences?
Since they are herd animals, how many should you have to start?
I see one of your bison using the tree for scratching post , i’ll suggest going to a street sweeping company and see about getting some of their older use brooms , put a steel post set in concrete some where out in field for the bison to use as a scratching post , bet all those bristles will feel pretty good to the bison and it will also help in grooming the long shaggy hair…… just something to think 🤔 about. You might want to think about setting up two or three more of the scratching post if the first one works out.
Don Latimer great idea. It might also help them groom out those burrs that get stuck in their fur along with scratching those hard to reach places haha
would you know a good amount of land you should need for a full herd? 100+?
I have been looking up loans for beginner ranchers.
You may have already, but look at USDA
