    Great video, Noel. I'm a Brummie and my Nan was from Knock. I have fond memories of my Mom and I taking her over there when I was 16 to see her brother and her old town before she passed. We went from Stansted on a RYR BAC-111 to Knock and then Knock was fogged out for us to come back so we were bussed to Shannon and came back to Stansted on an Irish owned DC-8. That was 28 years ago lol.

    Pity that particular route doesn't allow a view of Cork City on landing. Good views of Birmingham on the way out though, and is that the Old Head of Kinsale on landfall in Ireland? As a kid, I always wondered about the 'New' Head of Kinsale! I still wonder how the Old Head came upon that nomenclature :^)

    I prefer the Dash 8, flying quite a lot with FlyBe on the Dash. What do you think ? Dash 8 or ATR ?

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  6 років тому

      Yep I've flown a lot with Flybe, so I do have a soft spot for the dash. The ATRs are more modern and less tired in my experience - but there's not a lot of difference :)

    What settings do you use for your GoPro? Whenever I do footage my prop goes all funky. Thanks for the video.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  8 років тому +2

      +Tim Williams I had the same issue when the GoPro was on PAL mode. I found if you switch it to NTSC settings instead, it records in 30fps instead of the 25fps on PAL mode, which makes a massive difference in reducing the prop wobble. 60fps is even better, but my old GoPro didn't have that setting :)

    Awesome video! Sounds quieter then a Q400. But I haven't flown on either airplane.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  9 років тому

      Thanks! The -600 is a lot quieter and smoother than the Q400, but the older -500s are a lot more noisy and rattly.

    • @calvinrovinescu6166
      @calvinrovinescu6166 8 років тому +1

      Some say they are about the same others say different. If the Q400 is louder it's likely because its engines are nearly twice as powerful at 5000SHP as opposed the ATR72's 2700SHP for two planes of similar size. The ATR72-500 and 600 are almost identical except for the boost mode added to the engines, the updated avionics, RNP capability, and new seats and overhead bins so it is interesting that one is much smoother and quieter than the other. Is must be much like a Dash-8-300 vs a Q300.

    • @tyjoseph7343
      @tyjoseph7343 8 років тому

      The Q stands for 'quiet'. The Q400 NG is quietest, fastest, most smooth, and vibration-free turboprop on the market.
      However, the ATR72-600 is about 1 dB quieter at take off and 1.4 dB quieter at cruise than the old Dash-8-400/Q400s that aren't of the 'NextGen' (2009-present)
      The Q300 has a noise and vibration suppression system, something the Dash-8-300 did not have. The Q400 NG Series aircraft feature a revolutionary Noise and Vibration Suppression (NVS) system, which makes the Q400 NG aircraft the quietest, most vibration-free turboprop in the sky.
      The NVS system attacks noise at its source-airframe vibration caused by pressure pulses from the propeller blades beating against the fuselage. During flight, concealed microphones measure noise levels and propeller vibration and send this information to an onboard computer. This computer continually analyzes the information before sending it to devices called Active Tuned Vibration Absorbers, or ATVAs, which are mounted on the fuselage frames.
      The absorbers produce counter vibrations that all but cancel out the original vibrations. The result is a sharp reduction in both cabin vibration and noise, and a remarkable increase in passenger comfort.

    What's the flight altitude for a plane like this. Is it still around 30,000ft?

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  7 років тому +2

      Hi, we were cruising at FL220 (22,000ft) on this flight. Map and flight details are at infl.it/oa2vr if you would like to see more details of the flight :)

    • @noelphilips

    It`s the first time that I see that turboprop is being pushed back from gate...

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  8 років тому

      +Da`Man It's quite common here depending on the airport, a lot of the time they are in standard gates although you do sometimes get remote stands :)

    • @MonteKalafiori
      @MonteKalafiori 8 років тому

      +inflight Video Isn`t it a little bit expensive for airline to push back turboprop? Normaly they get stand where they can do turnover by their own.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  8 років тому

      +Da`Man Not sure of the economics, but I guess it's all included in the handling here. Most airports don't have stands where they can taxi in and taxi out, even on the remote stands!
