Saving 30,000 Baby Lobsters!

- Hey everyone, I'm here with an incredibly special video that not only ties to my family's legacy but also contributes to a vital conservation effort. Today, I’m doing something I’ve never done before-legally catching and keeping an egg-bearing lobster. This might sound shocking as it’s usually very illegal to disturb these crucial breeders of the lobster population. However, this mission is all in the name of science and sustainability.
Join me as I partner with the Bar Harbor Oceanarium to support their hatchery program, an ambitious project aiming to hatch and raise about 30,000 lobsters. This isn't just about expanding the population; it's about learning, preserving, and ensuring a future for the species. The egg-bearing lobster, affectionately known as the ‘mother lobster,’ will be under the expert care of the Oceanarium’s team to safely bring thousands of baby lobsters into the world.
One of the most heartwarming parts of this adventure is the personal connection. My grandfather was the last in our family to aid a Maine lobster hatchery program decades ago, and now I have the honor to contribute in my own way. It’s a full circle moment this Mother’s Day, bringing new life and hope to our lobster populations.
Once the eggs have successfully hatched, and the babies are stable, we plan to return the mother lobster safely back to the ocean. And yes, if all goes well, I’ll be keeping one of the baby lobsters to raise myself, documenting every step of its growth for you all.
Follow this journey on a day dedicated to mothers of all species, and see how we're helping ensure the survival of these incredible sea creatures. For more behind-the-scenes and educational content from the team at the Oceanarium, be sure to follow them on Instagram [@oceanariumeducationcenter]( / oceanariumeducationcenter .
Happy Mother’s Day to all, and here’s to a future flourishing with Maine lobsters!

Clawdia
Haha I said the same thing before I saw your comment
I like that one!
Clawdia is the only name for her
Let's make this comment go to the top! Clawdia is the name!
CLAWDIA is epic! I was gonna say Eggers...😂
I'm sorry - I can't beat "Clawdia"...😂
Clawdia Wilde
See "Leon the Lobster"
Citizen Snips would be my choice.
I think Hope should be her name
Clawdette is the only competition
Ive always wondered what would happen if you nursed a bunch of lobster egg. This is something id never do and im excited to watch this as it goes
Like the kid with his 1,4mio frog army? 😅
@@Subox05 that but more environmentally friendly
Same!!! I always thought they should farm raise lobsters to increase the lobsters
The eggs would be covered in milk!
@jujub4553 where I live we have multiple lobster hatcheries.... 🦞
As a kid growing up with lobstermen, fishermen, clammers, oyster farmers, and carpenters in my family, I ate seafood more often then beef or chocken. Plus we have all sorts of fish/lobster hatcheries !!
We went to the hatcheries as field trips in elementary and middle school, tbf we also visited cranberry bogs, studied the multiple habitats for oceans, marshes, and ponds , went on tide pool study field trips , whale watches, duck boats, etc.
Kinda never considered there wouldn't be fish/lobster hatcheries in some places. Simply because it's so common place for me!
With love, from the 💪 iykyk 😅
Claw-dia gets my vote!! Such a fun, but “normal” sounding name! Love watching your videos, and can’t wait to see what develops with the lobster egg venture.
This is the most feel good channel if i want to see some truly authentic genuine people that love what they do. You're an amazing person jacob and crew.. I love how you help the lobsters removing barnacules and giving them a snack. truly, you guys are amazing.
Letting money get between a friendship??? Not cool, Jacob. You know you could have broke Keith off a little better than you did. I wondered why he disappeared from your videos all of the sudden. But to find out it was about money and not showing him appreciation for what you now have? That sucks. The first month you were paid $20k and only gave him $600? Come on, bro. You wouldn't have this at all if he hadn't turned you on to it. You were doing flyfishing videos on UA-cam that no one watched before he suggested you start the lobster content and introduced you to Tiktok. Maybe you could have negotiated a contact of one large payment so he got some of the blessings too and from then on handled everything on your own, but instead you just ran with the success ahd forgot your friend... you saw dollar signs and got a bit greedy and completely forgot about how you got here to begin with.
...Remember, you can't serve both God and Mammon-- and the money doesn't go with you when you leave. This whole situation really makes me sad. God tested you with you a blessing, and you failed miserably. But you can make it right, its not too late...
Or dont, it is in your hands now, but when the karma comes back around, understand that you had a chance to be truly humble and appreciative but got lost in your newly found ego-boosting success. It will be whatever it will be. I just think you're better than this. I truly hope you prove me right. 😢
Don't forget clean, no foul language, gestures, etc ( except a few quiet ones between themselves during a previous project but it was still viewable by children. A wholesome channel! ❤
@@chilltarts yap yap yap i was interested til you showed your weird religious colors
I always wondered how many of the eggs reached full maturity.
I love the idea behind this program. Taking a few pregnant lobsters out of circulation gives them the chance to have babies who reach maturity while not massively & negatively impacting the other ocean creatures who live off the eggs as sustenance. Good job.
Only around 2 of them will make it from what I've read, the fact that this program wasn't expanded and kept up the past 30 years is a shame. We really need to take care of our fisheries better, they're in really bad shape and aren't getting better anytime soon.
@@robertharper3754 Politics and funding. Politicians tend to not care about stuff like this because it doesn't benefit them directly. So with that, funding gets cut off and the program can't survive unless they get tons of donations. And most people only really care when the animals are four legged and furry.
@@WastedTalent-, sad but VERY true. You would think with how much the fisheries are worth from a financial viewpoint that there would be more work done to keep them healthy and abundant. Not to mention the good PR from the environmental groups, alas the politicians we have now are truly one of the dumbest creatures on earth!
They do this with lake fish... alot. I've lived in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, the two states with the most lakes in the lower 48. Trout, salmon, bass, pike, sturgeon, walleye, muskie and steelhead are all stocked. This is not just for gaming purposes but to bring balance back to the ecosystems. It's really had dramatic positives over the last 25 years and they've learned a lot to get better at it.
Maybe _Shelly_ is a reasonable name for crustatia.
I literally thought of shelly too, great minds think alike 😉
Aww....Shelly is a nice name. 🦞💕
What a great idea guys! With so many eggs, making right conditions in a hatchery could have big results! Happy mommas day! ❤
Such a clever idea for a video on Mother's Day, and a great idea for the eggs. Take one mother out of, let's say, 1000 lobsters. 0.1%. And get a possible 20,000 lobsters from it. Amazing
Thats a caviar of an Idea!!😂😂
Clawdia would be hilarious.😂
Most commercial fisherman are conservationist. If we could get more fishermen like you thinks would be better. Thank you for showing what commercial fishing is all about. It ain’t easy! I love your show and what you do to keep your fishery alive.❤ name for lobster should be Eve,
Hunters, too. People don't realize that game hunters are a crucial part of conservation. Deer populations get out of control and disease spreads (Chronic Wasting Disease for one) that can infect livestock and other animals. It can wipe out entire populations of elk, moose, and deer in a locality. Aside from spreading disease, large populations of deer can destroy corn fields. There aren't many or enough natural predators that can keep the population in check, especially when there are unimited food sources in that field over there.
This is wonderful ! Keep us posted on Mama lobster. Perfect for Mother’s Day 🦞🦐🦀🦑 from SLC Utah
Hey there neighbor!
SLC here, as well 😊
This is the new content we all need
1:28 You should do a calendar for the ladies 😂
That's a good idea.
I second this idea! 😂
This sounds like the head start programs we do for some at risk turtle species. The eggs are incubated and the hatchlings are kept for one year. The single year leads then to gain weight, their shell can harden and they’re not a bite size snack anymore. Even just that one year makes a huge difference to numbers reaching sexual maturity. Love this idea!
I know nothing about lobsters, I never watched videos on it. But UA-cam decided to throw this at me and I am now hooked and I can't stop watching
Same here. And I’m in the middle of the prairie. It’s so interesting
Need a live cam to watch the process 😃
This is fascinating! Best wishes for a healthy brood.
Very cool that your grandfather did this before you. I hope these new hatchery program works out.
I grew up downeast and remember the program when i was a kid. Glad to see it being used again! I remember seeing the MASSIVE tanks of baby lobsters of all sizes. Some were even ready for release when my class went so we saw some bigger ones.
Clawdia is a great name
Clawdia is all "Yer bolls are mine, human!"
This was way more interesting than expected
Mother Hubbard -> so many kids she did not know what to do
I was thinking that one, too! 😂
Mother Hubbard's cupboards were bare. You're thinking of the old lady that lived in a shoe.
@@waypay1 thanks for the correction!
@@waypay1 You are so right! Apparently, my childhood reading of those two had superimposed the cupboard *into* the shoe.
@@mungbean345 Those were 2 of my favorites. 😁
Thanks for the hatchery tour, haven been since my son's were in grade school 💞
Mainah stuck in Idaho
I'm learning a lot from watching their lobster experiment.
After you picked her up all I heard was "put me back" in the voice of Bruce Willis from "Look Who's Talking". Amazing job guys!
So freakin cool watching this on Mother's Day Jacob! Best video I've watched all day...Thank you😊
I love how you all take care of the fishery! I grew up in Idaho. I grew a few sheep as a child. Animal husbandry is an art, science, and a love. Thank you for being good stewards!
I can’t wait to see how this goes I breed aquarium fish all the time and some fish parents are horrible parents and will eat the eggs.I steal the eggs put them in separate breeding tanks and hatch and raise them most aquarium fish lay hundreds of eggs I think for the same reason lobsters do because the survival rate is so low. I love seeing them go through all the stages of growth and then I keep my favorites out of all the babies and then I give the rest away to friends in the hobby. Thanks for making this video I can’t wait to see this play out!
This was really cool. I think this is one of your best episodes. Congrats on restarting such a wonderful program.
Name he CLAWdia. 😂
Knew nothing about lobsters. Thanks for the teaching. Enjoy watching.
I love the conservation side of your videos. Thanks for highlighting why regulations are so important for the survival of the industry.
I'm liking Clawdia, first with Bertha my second choice. Thanks for all you are doing to keep lobster fishing sustainable.❤
This is amazing. So much knowledge that we had no idea. I pray 🙏 that a lot of babies survive.
I've been watching your videos for a while now love your channel. I bought 15lbs of live lobster for mothers day I live in Rexton New Brunswick they all were females and half of them had notches in tail I never would have even know what that was if it wasn't for watching your videos. I love your attitude you never complain about regulations you guys have to deal with in your industry. Keep up the great videos.
Her name is now Eggatha
With how many lobster are in the sea, it's amazing that so few per 'batch' actually survive.
You know I really like the way that you try to help your livelihood out. By doing things like this video for the lobsters. And also with your blue I forget what his name was the blue lobster and you caught a sister or cousin in the last video I saw. I think it’s really neat. You’re good man.
Bowie, after David Bowie who had two different colored eyes.
I don't think Jacob gave Bowie's Sister a name. I would love her name to be Slick, after Gracie Slick of Jefferson Airplane.
Sounds pretty cool, Bowie & Slick. What do you think?
👍
I think we’re stowing our age with Grace, slick and David Bowie. But it’s all right.
Yeah, the oceanarium could work with him to do a charity streaming event where ppl bid on names for particular lobsters😂
- This is super exciting! Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us my friend!
Where is my alien kidnapping analogy?
She hit the genetic jackpot. With all that extra help, her offspring could take over the ocean!
I hope you give more updates as she lays and the growth of the babies. I love this program idea and an glad it’s going back into action. Continuing the family way in many aspects. So cool. Thank you
Name ideas:
Eve (because she's the first)
Valentina (Russian woman who holds the human record for most babies born, at 69)
Someone had 69 babies born? What the actual f! That’s insane.
@sforza209 18th century, so records aren't exactly ideal, but that's the claim
There's no way she had 69 babies in the 1700's. That's wild.
12:56 catching that food seems like mother intuition she knows she gotta eat and maybe even feeling relatively safe too. Bravo!
That's amazing II am super interested to continue watching and see how mama and the babies do What a great Mother's Day video 😊 I like the name Clawdia 😊
This is cool 🦞
Name suggestion:
Louise the Lobster.
Louise is the feminine form of Louis, meaning "renowned warrior," which bodes well for baby, who is destined to stand their ground with courage.
Clawdia made me laugh out loud. Cool name, though. Looking forward to seeing if this is a successful program. I really hope so.
I like Clawdia
We can name her Lunch and Dinner! Ok that's just wrong. How about Diane?
This is exciting! Hope you have lots of babies! And I really like Clawdia for a name!
Truly a steward of the sea
Lobster should be named " Bertha " obviously, hahaha.
Honestly it's great to see that you're doing this, and I'm surprised that the older program was even shut down. I've had an interest in the idea of aquaculture and active fishing hatcheries to help boost populations of both wild fish and ones used for commercial fishing, ever since about a decade ago when a startup announced a massive ball-shaped tank for fishery fish designed to be suspended along the coast in deeper water, giving the fish more space to grow and thrive and more protection from predators while also benefiting from local currents to help clean out waste and even shift in new food.
It ultimately just makes sense both commercially and environmentally to start being more active with our aquaculture efforts, I can't wait to see how progress goes with this hatchery.
Yeah amazing. Makenzie theublivevand grownJUST to be eaten.
Humans are ..repulsive.
Your grandfather had great foresight. Good luck with the program. I am following and looking forward to the updates!
This is very exciting. Good luck with your project!
Jacob, that is so cool what you guys are doing.
Kudos to you man for trying preserve a species that makes you a living and provides a good for many people on this planet. Glad to see that there are still some that aren't interested in greed and selfishness.
Miss Lobster McLobsterface. But yeah, Clawdia is a winner.
Lottie the lobster.. considering it’s all bit like the lottery! 😀
We booked a trip to Bar Harbor (because we’re such fans of your videos) and it just so happens we’ll be at the Oceanarium in mid-June! Hopefully we see some Stage 4 lobsters.
Any Bar Harbor recs while we’re there? Restaurants, lobster boats?
This is why i love watching Jacob's channel. It's not only super entertaining, but educational also!!!.
Thanks Jacob!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
My parents ran a trout hatchery when I was small. Have always been fascinated with the process. This is a process whose time is way overdue.
Congrats for this process.
Leto - the Greek goddess of motherhood, childbirth, and modesty
I was going to say Ceres, the Roman equivalent.
Venus!
What an amazing program! ❤❤❤
I loved this video, so informative! Will definitely be following along to see the results!
I see your shorts all the time and found it cute and all and appreciate letting the right ones go, but this has gotten my subscription. Good on you.
I am new to your channel I just want to say Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there and hope you guys have a blessed day
You are doing a great thing, giving hope to a species to bring them back to flourishing. So why not name the lobster "Hope"!!!!
This is so cool. We're learning about calcium carbonate and ocean acidification in my environmental science class right now so finding your page now was perfect timing. Love to see what you're doing in the local ecosystems to help lobster populations despite (or because of) your line of work.
I love how you just casually grabbed the lobster out of the barrel. You can tell the other guy was shocked.
Your channel is awesome ✌🏻😎
Akna, goddess of motherhood and childbirth
Good to see you collaborating with Ben and the Oceanarium again!! Best of luck to Mama lobster and the babies!!
That sounds like a pretty awesome program. Started watching on just your claw spa shorts. Your videos are informative and a great watch
Great segment real interesting hope we get to see the young
Você é um profissional excelente. Sou fã do seu trabalho...
Abraço de Fortaleza...
I never thought that I would be interested in lobsters and fishermen from the other side of the world, but I keep coming back to this channel!! I love your videos. And I can’t wait to see how many babies Clawdia gets.
I love your channel! Y'all make me laugh a lot yet learn even more! From one coast, west, to yours! ❤❤
Should be a homestead program that let's everybody grow lobster and crabs and other species to make a better future for all and a tax right off releasing program
How about “May” ? Mother May I ? Shelly May ? Moma May ?
Love this work you do. Keep it up!
Looking forward to following this beauty. Love that you involve your followers in these educational activities. Thank you so very much. Your enthusiasm is inspiring.
Shelly May
Clawdette!
This is very awesome content please do more updates with Ben! Very educational and great on the camera together!
Eve? Can't wait for the follow-up videos! Thanks Jacob
Clawdette
very cool!!! and informative! thanks Jacob and crew! also being a reptile nerd i deal with this often, they dont become "agressive" the become more "DEFENSIVE" agression would be them seeking you out to attack. These animals however are just protecting themselves and their young which is defensivness. anyway much love and awesome work!!
you guys are sooooo cool!!! i love that you make sure to involve yourself in education, conservation, and proper business practices!!
10:00 is why I no longer go in the ocean. "genetic material" lol nope, cant get me Kung Fu grip.
So cool! I am interested in seeing the updates on her and the babies. Since it is mother's day and she was the goodness of love and fertility, I say you name her Venus 💙💜💚
Awsome program. Look forward to watching the progress. New Zealand 🇳🇿 xxx
Maybelle momma ❤ May for mother's mother's day. Belle for beautiful momma.
Wow, my fingers are crossed this works. More lobster is nothing but good. You guys make good money and I get good eats. Win win.
You are a total class act!
How about "Fertile Myrtle" for the momma lobster's name?
Name her HOPE.
Found you through befr. Subbed just because of that first impression. Cant wait for a concept that interests me.
I like the way you teach us on top of just fishing. Thumbs up to you and the boys.
I like Lola the Lobster. Thanks for all you do. Such an interesting program. Best of luck!
This is my favorite video from this uploader so far!
I hope this experiment works ❤❤
This is incredibly interesting. Thats for making this video and doing this program.
