I loved the SD1 styling. I absolutely adore the V8 and its sound. They were nick named "The Bionic Dog" in this country they were quick for their day. What great car that one being a lovely example!!!!
Brings back fond memories of my 3.5 V8. 1980-83. Sadly written off in a proven no fault accident. The thing that always stuck out was the glorious sound of that V8 and it always look clean and brand new whenever i opened the bonnet😊❤
absolutely stunning, always loved these. My dad had 4 from new , the first in August 1976. Never any issues. Last one was in 1986. I loved everyone of them. Got to drive the last one when I passed my driving test in 1987. I wish I had one now, they still look beautiful
Many comments about how good the SDI still looks today. This is a 50 year old design yet still looks so right today. Just how stunning these looked when they launched is hard to explain unless you were around at the time, when the british roads were full of Marina’s and old Vauxhalls and Fords. As others have commented these were also fantastic and so relaxing to drive compared to the cars of the time, and quick for the time too. The Rover SDI V8 was also surprisingly good on fuel if driven sensibly out of town because of the gearing and low drag, but so nice to drive you didnt care anyway If you bought one new the build quality may have disappointed, but I bought a series 1 manual V8 around 8 years old for £350 with the clutch gone, and it only had minor rust. I did the clutch, cleaned the rust up and waxoiled the car and ran it for a few weeks, and it seemed go well, then changed jobs which was 110 mile round trip so decided to run it for a while to commute until we decided to move jobs or house. It just ran, and ran, so I decided to just run it until something major went. I ended up putting another 200,000 miles on it over the next 8 years, with nothing more than brakes, tyres, and a few minor parts, such as a water pump, ball joints etc, (But changed engine oil very regularly every couple of months) It got a bit tatty, but the waxoil stopped the serous rust and it kept going. The most significant failure from the huge milage was eventually the bulkhead fatigued where the clutch master cylinder bolts to the bulkhead which was because it flexes slightly each time to the clutch is pressed down and eventually it cracked and the whole clutch master cylinder cracked away still bolted to some of the bulkhead! I cut around another bulkhead pressing out of a scrapyard car and sandwiched it underneath and tack welded it. The car wasn’t cheap on fuel, but it wasn’t over expensive either, and so relaxing to drive. And quick too when you needed to overtake. I run a 5 series BMW today, clearly a much better made car, but still not as nice to drive. If these had been built properly think what could have been
A rare sight stateside, I'll bet. Great to see it in such good condition. I remember these from my childhood on UK roads. Love the design of these cars. One of the best looking Rover's for sure.

Totally forgot they had Rover SD1’s in America. Considering that car was built up the road from where I live many years ago, seems strange watch it cruise around in the U.S. what a beautiful example of a Rover SD1 V8. With the Buick American V8 of course!
The "engine block" rights to manufacture were sold toRover they developed the block and it ran land Rovers and Range Rovers. Capacity increased too. Bore liners were able to make 4.6 liter capacity. The crank only has Conrod bearings opposite at 180⁰ - known as flat plane cranks. Makes a howling noise like Ferrari engines. A very compact and only weighed 170kg or 400lbs. The weak point being only one camshaft.
Lovely design. Flung together by indifferent workers with no concept of quality control, sadly. As a result, these cars are actually longer on one side.
@@cybertrophic I agree with you, it is sad. I personally think the SD1 was, and is, one of the most beautiful looking cars ever. If i had the money i would love this car in my garage. The sound alone is amazing.
I saw a beautiful Rover P6 on the road in California a few years ago but the SD1 is even rarer, I think! They are an extremely unusual sight on US roads (looks like you're in New Hampshire), practically unicorn status. This one looks like it was possibly an example shipped to the USA from continental Europe (?) as it is not US-spec, unless some modifications were made. I didn't think they sold them as late as 1982 in the USA anyway. What a stunningly beautiful car, and that growling V8 is fantastic! I am an absolute sucker for that cabin as well! I always felt that if Rover could have screwed them together a bit better and priced this car right, it might just have been a winner. It looked terrific back then and it still looks amazing today! Well done to whomever cared for or restored this particular car, it's very impressive!
Oh yeah this brings back beautiful memories i have had so many sd1's v8's, the power, and handling was amazing considering in the 1980-1990s not a lot could touch the rover v8, u could do so much to make them look sound and drive better, fantastic car, if i had the cash id go out and buy one, and keep it till day i die

I had 2.4 TD version in early '90. Overall quality was not great but I loved this car. My mother, who had in this time new Mercedes 124 and W126 always says, she was less tired as passenger in Rover than in Mercedes, longer trips. I sold it only because lack of spare parts etc.
Love the rover's modular dashboard..makes it easier for left or right hand drive..look where the air vent on the passenger side perfect for a steering column👍🇬🇧
I had a mint condition 1986 SD1 series 2. V8. Great looking car and capable of 200 klm per hour. Another car I regret selling . It did have , like a lot of Leyland cars of the time, body alignment issues ( door gaps etc) . For some reason it had three mufflers and the one near the rear axle actually had the gases doing a ninety degree turn . A trip to the exhaust shop took care of that. Went and sounded better with just the two.
@Radar Fairy yes the doors always went first on these. Which is why you had to keep them indoors if you could. Otherwise after a couple of years they were rust buckets unfortunately. Lots of people used to get them waxed sprayed on the inner shell which does a very effective job at stopping the rust problems so I’ve been told.

Went from a P6B to a sd1 v8 (early model). Looked fantastic…just a disappointment in ride handling and build qaulity. Sold it to sister at 8 years old and it rusted out from underneath her. Today…they still get admiring glances tho
That SD1 is a Vitesse, not a Vanden Plas. I would like to see the TPS back in the engine. I like the 3.9L installed on it, something Rover should have done while in business. Great looking car. The SD1 finally reached the credit it deserved long time ago, after so much scorn.
Soo much scorn for nothing when compared to the horrendous de ign and quality issues that plague modern cars from the popular brands, recently a Japanese one snatched off its 10 year old cars from customers giving $3000 because they found the airbags had corroded, vw gearboxes that stall and 5 instances in Australia where the cars were crushed by trucks on motorway after stalling, GM gearboxes and much more.

really nice car but looks like a standard one to me with a bit of "badge engineering" :) The vitesse would have had a trip computer (none in that car) the VDP usually had leather plus trip computer (although could be optioned in velour) also the VDP and vitesse should have an electric roof (especially in the facelifted cars) not that manual one.
